Anyone else play virtual pool?

It sounds silly, but I actually think playing it on my iphone has helped my pocketing/aiming. I didn't get a chance to play pool much in the past year and now that Im getting to the table more, I "see" the shot better. The only answer I can think of is virtual pool.

I bought the game for my computer years ago. It is still in the cellophane. If I am going to play pool it will be on my table. I am not a video gamer.

So; my answer is no.

I first played VP in early 1995 on Windows 3.1, as I dimly recall, on a 40MHz Pentium with the multiplier error.

The original VP didn't have jump shots and you could draw the cue ball with a level stick even when it was frozen to the cushion. That was all fixed in the second version, and carom, snooker and other games were added. Virtual Pool Hall had all the shots from the Artistic Billiards (carom) competition built in.

Two physics details that I think haven't gotten in yet (because they are very time-consuming to model) are ball and rail compression. Squirt is in there, though.

Hi Bob,

I know that you know Steve as well. He's incorportaing rail compression in VP4 which wasn't in VP3 and he says that he is working on ball compression as well, incorporating it in a way that will give good results (whatever that means).

If you come down to Los Angeles, let us know maybe we can all get together or meet and play at Hollywood Billiards.

I'd be interested in knowing where the physics of rail compression is described. I've searched all over and can't find any scientific publications on it. Jack Koehler's emperical data is about all I have found.

Virtual Pool 3 Online

Even though the game is about 9 years old, it still has a nice little online following, and is still the best pool sim out there. It has a lot of game choices. Besides the standard 8/9/10 ball games, there is straight pool, one pocket, snooker, 1/3 cushion billiards, and pool games like cowboy, honolulu, bankpool, and cribbage to name most of them.
Being the game is 9 years old, the graphics are wanting, but the game play and physics are top notch.

The game can be downloaded here.

Gamespy supports the online community.

Try the demo if your not sure what the game is like.
The complete single/multi player online version costs a little money, but I think it's worth it if you can't always get to the pool hall. You'll definately get your pool fix.

Daily and weekly tournament schedule here; as well as tournament history, players, ratings, ect.
http://www.vphqtournaments.com/Schedule.asp

There is a one pocket tourney this Saturday - the first in a long time. There's only a few of us that play the game on a regular basis, so it'd be cool if we got more players that enjoy the game.

Drop by and play a game.
