Anyone EVER see Efren Reyes mad?

I realized something that I never thought of before. I have never read, seen nor heard of anyone ever having said that Reyes ever lost his temper or acted out or said something demeaning to anyone else. And ever means EVER. The only times he's ever come close from all the info I have is once when (you guessed it) Earl challenged him in the postion of the cue ball when Efren was getting ready to break. Earl said it was too far up the table. Efren grabbed the cue ball, slid it back quickly then pushed it up again towards the line and appeared to have put it right back where it started from. Although he looked ticked off, he never said a word. And BTW, it was not over the line to start with. The other thing was when Francisco Bustamonte said in an interview that Efren "sometimes doesn't talk much after a loss." That's it. That's all I've ever heard and he's been playing in the USA for going on 25 years. Same thing back home, where he is revered in the Philipines. No dirt. No temper. He's humble, soft spoken and endearing. Never to have had a miscue off the table, no scandals, jail time, drugs, etc. Never sharks when playing. Doesn't argue.
Pretty impressive.

I saw him setthe chalk down hard on the rail once. seriously I dont think he has that personality trait, what ever part of your brain pisses you off in Efrens brain dosent work-which is a good thing, there would be less crime if more people had his disposition in all walks of life, I guarantee you he'll never be a road rage driver. I truely believe thats another component of his success he dosent have peaks and valleys of adrenelin when he plays.

now that i'm older i'm alot more calmer and smoothed out and play better than when i was younger and would get pissed about something, i wish i had his temperment years ago, he is the whole package-i've been saying that for 20 years.

Yeah, at the Peter Vitalie Invitational Tournament in L.A. in 1987. He unscrewed his cue in his match with Mike Sigel in the semis. He didn't like the foul that was called on him. When Sigel hung up the 9, he screwed his cue back together and finished the match.

He's managed to control himself ever since. Ha Ha. Actually he wasn't mad then. He just unscrewed and sat down.

I love to watch him when he hides himself. He laughs at himself...then kicks it in three rails like he had a remote control on it. Johnnyt

i saw him miss and smack him self in the back of the head. i think it really hurt so then he laughed and then so did everyone else.

"I saw him set the chalk down hard on the rail once."

"...whatever part of your brain that pi$$%# you off in Efren's brain doesn't work."

Two very funny lines. Good job! :)

That's something else...he always says he got "lucky". He never brags or rubs it in. In almost every interview, the word 'lucky" does come out of his mouth.

And Johnnyt, the "remote control" cue ball was another gem!

thanks, its true.

Yep, amazingly he wacked the table with his cue when he had a dry break against me at 7:9 down in Manila, he also got a bit angry with the local racker. I didn't know about hot racks then (Id never even seen anyone check a rack!) but I never made another ball on the break! :(

I think bata has an errand boy that gets mad for him.

I am actually in the Philipines right now, and the other day at One-Side cafe, I discussed the worshiping of Efren with one of the locals.

Everybody, and I mean everybody are really fond of him, and nobody has a bad word to say about him. In which other sport can you get a lesson with number 1, for an amount of around 20$? (which is what you pay when you loose a match to 9 or 11 - with handicap..)

One of the old filipino pool stars were there that night, being in some financial difficulties. Efren gave him 5000 pesos immediately.

He is really a good guy, very kind, and I think he is the only pool player I have never heard a bad word about - including myself..

Modest, humble and generous are three words that come to mind when trying to describe the Magician of Pool. Talented, friendly and inspirational are three more. Aren't we lucky to have him around. I'm sorry he didn't get over here until age 32. We may have missed his prime.

I didn't. I saw him ran out 7 racks in a row playing Rotation when he was 19 yrs. old!
Jay, from what I know, if you unscrew your cue, it means you're conceding the match.
I could be wrong though...

i was in the jakarta leg of the asian san mig tour last year..
Reyes was about to play in the semifinals..
He was practicing alone at the other room while the other half of the semifinal is being played..
suddenly one of the crown watching him in practice suddenly got near to him and asked for his signature.
Alady organizer quickly blocked him and yelled at him not to disturb efren..the guy is persistent and got near to reyes..
Reyes momentarily stared at the man , put down the cue and signed to his note , after that, he picked-ip again his cue and continued to practice..
The lady organizer was clearly irritated but not efren..At that moment I'm afraid that I might see the other side of efren..but not..
he goes on to get to the finals and win the tournament on that day..
surely luck has to be kind to him..

Efren updates....

It is a pity that we have not seen Efren in a tournament for quite some time now. However, per this post from the matchroom website, he is still in shape and is still a threat in whatever tournament he will join in the future. Have heard a lot of stories about Efren being generous not only to fellow pool players but also to his less fortunate province mates. He shares his winnings a lot of people. That is why he is so blessed.

" Efren beat Ronnie 21-19 in 10-ball also at One Side last Friday before leaving for Guam Saturday night. Also Yangyang beat Jeff de Luna 12-7 that same night.

Update on Efren`s games since his return from Guam last Tuesday....Tues.he beat Lolong with 5,9,10 handicap. Wed. beat Bert Pasay for 2 sets of 5,9,10 then beat Ronnie in 10 ball, Thurs. beat Jerome with 8,10 handicp then Ronnie in 10 ball again, Fri. beat Gomez also with 8,10 handicap then lost to Ronnie hill-hill in rotation, Sat. he beat Ronnie in rotation
