No offense, shootn, but if you are really serious about opening a pool hall, you have to be self sufficient and driven enough to find sources of info for yourself. Not just ask others for the info.

That being said, I can give you a link to a lot of discussions on the topic. Google groups is pretty much where you want to go if you have a question about... well, anything. Want to know what a rough estimate of a house addition is? Google Groups. Want to find out how to create a restore partition on your PC? Google Groups.

Opening a pool hall

Some of the discussions are older, but they all have the general gist of what problems/concerns are associated with the process.

Good Luck.

ive seen enough of them fail that i have some opinions on things you need to have a successful profitable one. Unless you just have a huge population around you, or a huge pool player population around you, i think you almost have to be a nice bar that has pool tables. So that means youre dealing with alcohol sales, and some areas require you to have food sales to have an alcohol license...so theres that to deal with. Of course with alcohol comes the problems associated.........fights, bad elements.....so now youre talking some type of security staff to keep things safe for good customers. Plus would this be your primary vocation, managing it.......or is it more of an investment, in which case you need good trustworthy management, and there will always be the issue of finding decent employees as well. Not to discourage you but I can think of alot of other businesses i would start/buy before i would start a poolroom. I think the national figure for new business failings is something closed to 90%.......so the odds are against you from the start, but hey........you might have the right set of conditions and the right environment where you are to make something really nice too. Good luck

pool halls in my area don't seem to last very long,,,2 years seems to be the maximum length in making any profit,,,between local ordinances & regulations, it's hard to make it,,,I survived from 5/03 until 4/05, saw the handwriting on the wall and closed the doors,,,3 others opened and failed during the same time period,,,,4 others have tried it and failed since I closed,,,jes' the facts, jack

Just out of curiosity why do you want to open a pool room?

What is your idea of the kind of place it will be?

What kind of clientele do you want to attract?

How much do you want to profit each year?

You might want to check out the section that is in the forums that is devoted to pool room owners.

shootnlightsout, I hope you realize that when people discourage you from getting into their business, it means they're making fortunes off it. ;)

1.Do not take on more overhead than you can manage, poolrooms don't make money all day long so stay away from expensive prime retail locations.
2.Be prepare to work very hard and spend all of your time focused on your business.
3.Running a pool room has nothing to do with pool it has to do with serving customers, it's more like running a restaraunt.
4.Don't throw open the doors and sit back, you need to be creative and generate income, ie parties, functions, meetings etc.

5.Don't run out of cash!

good luck , you will need it :)

Thanks to everyone

Sorry to not check back sooner, Like I said something I am interested in. My town has about pop.125,000. Lot of players but closest poolroom is about 50 miles away want to start something simple 10-15 tables, dartboards and foosball tables. In my town the liquor licenses are all use up but I can still get a alcohol license and just serve beer. All your information so far has been greatly appreciated good or bad.

I was told a few years ago that it is simple math in an average town.

Take your total monthly expense (rent, electricity, employees, insurance etc) divide that by 200 bucks and that will tell you how many tables you need. Have less than that and you have to raise your rates. Or take your total expense and divide that by how many tables you have and if it is greater than 200 you will have to charge more for items (drinks, table time etc), less than 200 and you will succeed. (as long as you don't hire anyone that is going to rob you blind.)

I am not a room owner so take this advice for what it is worth.
