anyone interested in a bandsaw jig for making full splice cues

Why?

How bout we stop this right here. This is why I am a stalker instead of a poster. I have a very high internet opinion of both Randy and Chuck. Like Robin I would trust them both with money in advance of product. Knock it off.........Kyle

I never doubted Chuck would have a prototype to show. But anytime you have an idea for a jig or new gizmo theres always someone who will knock it. Some people are never happy or satisfied.....ignore....it works.

I never knocked his idea, in fact I'm all for it. I only suggested, because in the past others have advertised products that never came into existence, that he wait until he had a final product.

I'm not sure why that makes me a bad person, asshole, bigot, or someone who has no ability...ect.

Like I've already said a few times. If I was misunderstood, I apologize. Obviously, it my opinion should have been shared privately with Chuck.

I'm sorry Chuck if you thought I was being negative or trying to cause you grief. As you can see, the grief has become all mine.

thanks randy

Water under the bridge. You said your thoughts I said mine. Now lets get to work on this damn jig. Photos tomorrow on the 3rd or 4th revision of the original wood one

Pretty simple. If you believe for one minute that Chuck is like Lee, don't purchase one when they are finished.

I read all your posts Randy. I might be mistaken but I didn't see one constructive word in any of them, other than suggesting that Chuck's integrity is that of Lee's.

Chuck knows that I will take one as well.

When they are ready, I will be ready.

more changes

i really did not like the lock down design my buddy made, so we came up something much more stable. the tulipwood is too short for a full splice cue , but used just for demonstration. the lines on the tulipwood are just pencil marks to show appx saw cuts. don't pay too much attention to the quality of wood, its made from scraps.

i turn 70 next week and i am working my jewely store and trying to also build cues, this jig might need a half dozen tweeks before we go to aluminium. it will be done when it gets done.

I really like the wall paper boarder around the window. It really dresses up your shop!! :-)

tsp&b

i lived there about 10 years and never noticed it until last week, a gay couple brought their cues over for some repairs and called my attention to it, funny now you do the same, coincidence, i guess :-)

nice effort

hi, I'm impressed what your effort and in only 4 attempts. I'm well over 20 attempts
and see another 3 iterations. But I enjoy all the successes and failures. I enjoy
woodworking and figuring out and making wood joints. So the 4 point Brunswick
classic joint looks so strong and practical, I had to try it too. My contraption when
from simple to complex to simple again. I can't quite figure out how yours work but
it looks quite adjustable.

Here's my experience. First you need a well tuned bandsaw( or radial arm saw.).
You don't need and expensive unit just well aligned. Something that can cut smooth
veneers, like shown in the photos. The infeed table should be long enough so the
work piece is stable. You should try to cut a bird mouth in a 2x2 scrap wood. When
I cut my stuff, I have a slow feed rate and I stop the machine before I pull it out, so not
to damage the cut surface. I also keep a wedge handy to put into the kerf if the wood
moves and pinches the blade. When you make the second cut, make sure things
are square because the base of the point will not line up, or use a lot of filler for the
gap. You can make is cut free hand quite well but a fixture can make it more
consistent. Before you buy a high end carbide blade you should decide if you want
to master is joint. This joint is quite simple if you are careful.

The radial arm saw joint is the one with the large flat bottom point. I spent several
days building this fixture. The first attempt had to be strong because my 18" radial arm
is unforgiving if something binds up. 7 1/2 hp, 3400rpm, 18' blade doesn't stop quickly.
But you can crank out at handle in less than a minute. This set up is now in the junk
pile. I didn't care for the look of the return point.

I could have saved 100s of hours if I had a tooling jig like the one being developed here.

Building these full splice cues is a wonderful time burner and it puts a smile on my
face.

Oh yeah, mine jig is made out of particle board.

Very nice of you to share your experience, Ernie. Looks like you are off to a fine start. Are you cutting the prongs on a lathe? Or table saw?

hi Desi,?
If you would like to hear about my techniques or mistakes, send me a phone number and a
time to call. I think what you're doing is going to make the world a better place. There is
a true satisfaction in building a full splice cue and if more people do it the better. I personally
won't go thru the trouble of being criticized about my intention. I had a art instructor that said we
need art critics to keep us people that build things from soaring too close to the sun like Icarus.
We shouldn't get too cocky.
keep up the good work, Ernie

finally finished

last night we got the last piece for the all metal fullsplice bandsaw jig, first piece of wood we cut was perfect with no adjustments.
we might have gone overboard a bit as i guess the weight to be about 65 - 75 lbs, but at least its solid. i dont know what other bandsaws it will fit with out having to drill 4 mounting holes in the frame.
mine is mounted on my 14 inch grizzly, you will need to take off your fence system to install this one.

i am unable to post photos until friday morning, at that time i will start a new thread, with all pertinent information.
