Cant remember who wrote story about -
Removing shot from a shotgun shell placing
Shaft in barrel and shooting cueball to break rack.

If i recall cue ball disentigrated. Writer said never tried
this stupid stunt again. Glad no one got hurt.

Break would be around 82 mph if me estimate is
correct.

As joel pope points out closer to 800 mph
1200 fps.
I think it was the late great Fels?

I never heard of this, but it is right up my alley!, I could go down to the basement and reload a softer round with less powder and try again. My loading stuff is about 10 feet from my table so the camera could catch it all!! :)

some of the loads I have tried in my shotguns are too fun!!!

Sounds like a good time — you might want to use a long string and a barrel you don't care too much about. (ref: "Elmer Fudd vs. Bugs Bunny").

I'm also having visions of a splintered shaft, ripped cloth and a ruined foot cushion.

Maybe this is best attempted on a faux pool table made of plywood or something?

But most importantly, please, *p*l*e*a*s*e* take some high-speed video.

Air Cannon

Why not air cannon the cue ball. Then you have no English just forward force. You can measure the air pressure then the speed and calibrate the 2. Just an idea.

A weak shell from a shotgun ipushes the lead over 1,000 ft. Per second which is roughly 700 mph so I imagine it is a tad quicker than 82 mph

I think the barrel would foul and both the gun and the person pulling the trigger would suffer severe damage

Yeah my bad I was figuring 1200 ft per second, but as I am prone to do screwed up the equation.

Doesn't a shaft weigh about 4 oz?
I never messed around with shotguns much, but I'm guessing that's about 3x the weight of a typical load of shot. The velocity of the shaft would be considerably less than a load of shot, and chamber pressure would be dangerously high.

But, good stories do require a certain level of commitment. ;)
