On occasion, some of the local stations would compete with each other in what some of you remember as 'gas wars'. I've seen 17.9 cents per gallon many a time. On a Saturday night you could gas up, take your girl to the Drive-In movie, and eat at Steak and Shake, all for about five bucks.
Of course, the bad thing about Saturday night was my Mom, who cooked on a schedule, would always have beans and cornbread for supper. Well, come later in the evening when we were all parked beside the lake, watching the submarine races, I would sometimes feel a great rumbling in my lower regions (no, not those lower regions) and have to excuse myself and go outside for a minute or two.
One Saturday evening, my buddy had eaten supper over at my house and you would have thought you were watching "Blazing Saddles". We never did see those girls again.
