The orbital sander went on mine. Must have a clutch that wore out. It runs but won't spin. I'm too lazy to take the motor apart. $30 for a new sander sounds like good fix to me. I got more than a year out of it using it at least 4 times a week. If the new one goes I'll bite the bullet and buy a ...no I won't, I'll hand polish them:D. Johnnyt

Four times a week? And I thought I was anal... mine is still going strong with about once a week cleaning. I did drill a lot of cooling holes in the sides of the bucket.

My table is out on a sceened patio in Tampa, FL. Even though I brush and vacume the table a lot the humidity picks up whatever chalk and dust thats in the cloth and it gets on the balls quickly. I cover it when not in use. Johnnyt

I don't think 4 times a week is all that much. My homemade polisher died a while back, the new polisher model meant I had to change the bucket a little and I was too lazy.

So ... I got a metal oil change pan and lined it with some old carpet. Now I just toss the balls into the pan and use the polisher by holding over the balls. Works fine.

OK, I miss Florida but I don't miss the humidity. Here in Fort Worth, my table is upstairs away from the day to day goings on, our humidity is pretty low, so I have it much better than you for sure when it comes to keeping stuff clean.

But I do miss Florida... (Born and raised)

Mine seemed to run warm when I first built it and then drilled about 8 holes equally spaced around the bottom of the bucket. Haven't had any problems with it over the course of a year, but I only use it about once a month.

JohnnyT,

The way I look at it, what I spent to put mine together is less than the sales tax on a $500 ball polisher.

I have been using mine for 3 years now....I changed the carpet ring in the bucket one time...

The car polisher I got from Habour Freight was like $19.99 at the time and is still going strong...

NOTE: When I made it I vented the bottom of the bucket and I also used a plastic bowl (cut the bottom out) to raise up the polishers (air intake) from the bottom of the bucket.

My hunch is that is the reason people burn up the motors is because they are not vented well enough.....JMO

I agree. If I had to spend $30 and 1 hour of my time once a year for 10 years I'd still be ahead. Besides, no one knows how long the $500 one would last either. Johnnyt

I have a hunch you are right. I will raise mine and vent it more this time around. Johnnyt

Exactly. I see it as money saved and left over to buy another cue. :-)

johnny don't forget your connection to the sander "pad" could be gaffed up....

i have a porter cable orbital sander that I have to repair....the mounting screws ate through the pad so it could not turn anymore

it still runs just fine but cant turn the pad itself, so what I'm doing is turning a new bottom plate out of aluminum and then I'll stick the backer pad to it.....be a cold day in hell when those screws eat through that alum like they did the fiberglass!

Not sure if thats your problem but figured it was worth mentioning since it sounded familiar.

The two screws are like new and tight. It's something broke inside. I don't have a workshop anymore, so would have no way of making a new part. I don't enjoy that kind of work anymore anyhow. I use to get paid for it. For $30 it's not worth getting my B/P up over.:D. Johnnyt
