So it appears I've moved to skill level 5 in 9 ball. I'm still a skill level 3 in eight ball :/

It would seem that my classes on the side with Mr. Donny Lutz and Mr. Scott Lee are paying off.... and they will continue to do so.

Now all I need to do is prevent a meltdown like the one I had a when I moved up to a skill level 3 because my plan is to keep wining. And this level up crap ain't gonna bring me down this time.

Cheerio,

I asked Scott Lee if he could make me an APA 5 in 9 ball?

He said "first take a two week vacation from pool ".......... :)

EDIT - nice progress!

How many balls does the typical SL5 run in a rack of 9B?

I wish we had fairly comprehensive stats like that in my statewide league, but we're just not there yet with all that fancy technology. :(

Any particular reason why you're having more trouble with 8B than in 9B? Or are the ratings comparable for the 2 disciplines and just computed differently?

APA ratings are different for 8 and 9 ball. 8 ball goes up to skill 7 and 9 ball goes up to skill 9, so the 9 ball skill is usually higher than the 8 ball one.

Anyway, to the OP, congrats on getting to sl5! It's always tough goings at first when you've just moved up, but you it looks like you've got some great instructors to help you. Good luck and let us know when you're a sl6!

It's hard to say. It's not compared nationally just locally. I'm a 9 here but if I goto another league I might be an 8 because they have better players. I wish apa had some regional events around here so you could match up against people outside your league without going to nationals.

Congrats!

I guess things are different in the apa today. I played in regional apa events to qualify for national single events. That was over twenty years ago.

That is still the case for singles events, unless your local area can generate enough singles qualifiers on their own to hold their own "regional", to send singles to Vegas.

We are working on that here. Until now, local singles qualifiers from here had to travel to Connecticut to qualify for Vegas. We are hoping to hold our own "regional" next year, if we get enough participation.

Again, Juicy Girl, big time congrats.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I played in a large apa franchise (lee tiani's) the regional events I played in had players from Virginia, Pa. Delaware, West Virginia and jersey oh and of course Maryland.

These events were huge and would span two full days of play.I don't know if he is still doing that way or not. But it gave you a good picture of how competitive you were with players from other areas.

In APA 9-ball scoring every ball pocketed is worth 1 point, and making the 9 is worth 2 points. So there is a potential of 10 points in every rack and scoring is quite different from 8-ball.

SL 5 have to make 38 points to win the match. Here is a link to the handicap system and charts.

Is your league BCA sanctioned? If so, have your league director check out leaguesys. BCA league offers it as a service to sanctioned leagues for scorekeeping.

Good work, keep it up! You'll move up in 8ball soon enough. Looks like it's just a matter of the numbers catching up.

Nice job! You must be playing well, seen many players get stuck at 4 in APA 9b.

To answer someone's question...
A pretty good rule of thumb is a player should run their APA number with ball in hand
and an open spread, in 9b. But I've only seen APA in 2 regions and it may be different elsewhere.
So a 5 can run 5 with a good layout. A 9 should run the rack if you scratch on the break.
4's and 5's are the bread and butter of any APA team.

Your gap between 8b and 9b is unusual, most players play 1 rank worse in 9b than in 8b.
Never saw someone's 8b game 2 ranks worse than their 9b. I bet you go up to a 4 in 8b soon.
Maybe a 5.

The goal is to play better but dont move up in skill level.

Going up is tough, to try to get it lowered is nearly impossible.

Stay a low handicap.

Ken

Congratulations!

I remember the excitement of being moved up. :-)

Its refreshing to see someone in the APA who is happy about being raised, and not just trying to sandbag.

Just stop it.

Encouraging sandbagging, instead of congratulating her on her accomplishments....good grief.

If more if us do things the right way, the better the experience will be for everyone. In other words, more people that DON'T cheat is a good thing.

You really are a negative person. At least the way you portray yourself here on AZB....

Again, Loren, GREAT job.

This isn't quite true. Considering the spread on a straight line relation and the middle number for each is 4.5 and 5 respectively, then without any other consideration, the 9-ball ranks (1-9) would trend higher than 8-ball (2-7) above those middle numbers and lower below the middle. But, in her case, she probably will be a SL 4/5 (eight ball/9-ball)

It would be interesting to see, but typically, 9-ball rankings are higher above the 3 or 4 level vs 8-ball SL from what I have seen in several states. And considering I played many years in Western & Central Mass, it would be surprise to me if that didn't hold true in Eastern Mass.

Never saw someone's 8b game 2 ranks worse than their 9b. .
Considering the top handicap is SL-7 for 8-ball and SL-9 for 9-ball (people on these boards have written this as SL 7/9) then that automatically says that there is at least one handicap that demands an 8-ball rank that is "2 ranks worse than their 9b).

But, normally "within one" is what I've seen.

Freddie <~~~ 2 worse
