APA on the Corona Virus

Honest question: Why does it matter there is currently not enough testing?

1) If you don't have symptoms -> The hospital doesn't want to test you anyway

2) If you have fever but your symptoms are not bad -> Go to doc, get TamiFlu, stay home, and don't go near anyone (just like the regular flu)

3) If you have fever and can't breath well -> Go to the hospital. You might have Coronavirus. They will test you
Judging from the following report, that's not quite how things are working right now, at least not in some areas:

One nurse in West Virginia said she's been very sick for more than a week but has been unable to get a coronavirus test despite repeated requests by her and her doctors.
The nurse, who asked not to be identified for fear that she will lose her job, told CNN that she first developed a fever of between 100 and 103 degrees and an "unrelenting cough" that won't let up.
The nurse said she was tested for two strains of the flu, and both came back negative. But when she asked to be tested for the coronavirus she was declined repeatedly.
"I have had several doctors ask for me to be tested, but we have been unable to get permission for me to be tested," she said.
The nurse said she and her doctors have repeatedly contacted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the West Virginia health department.
She said her requests were declined because she has not been in direct contact with someone who has tested positive.
Now, other members of her family have also fallen sick. When they tried to get tested for coronavirus, they were also declined, the nurse said.
"At this point I'm so angry and outraged at the way this is being handled," she said.

I was assuming that people would know I meant funny as "ironic"..not haha.

And I was assuming that people would know my message meant neither ironic nor haha funny. I know what you meant, sir. My message (and yours, I think) is remain calm and listen to the experts. Overreaction either way will do more harm than good.

The Hawaiian governor just asked all visitors to stay away from Hawaii for 30 days and closed all attractions. I'm pretty sure hotels will be closing for awhile.

Yes sir. We're on the same page.

What I don't understand is how can anyone with a brain think this isn't a very dangerous situation?

If people don't start handling things better, I fear we will end up in the same situation that Italy's experiencing.

Time is shorter than people think. The average person in the US lives in a fairytale world. This virus has the potential that the Spanish flu outbreak had and I think that outbreak claimed between 700,000 and 800,000 lives.

We do and the people who have been in close contact with them can't get tested unless they show symptoms, and those who were in contact with them have had contact with us.

The point is, we are trying to prevent the spread.

Trying to stop the spread is the point at this stage. My wife & I both in our 70's with health issues. Perfect candidates for being victims of "The boomer remover" as some young ones calling it.

What we have going for us is that we live 6 miles outside of a small town. A neighborhood of small farms and houses with acreage. We can survive quite some time with what we have on hand. Younger neighbors offering to get us anything we need. Even if power goes out, we can hang in there with a woodstove and an old gunsmoke style hand pump atop our well. This lifestyle leads to stockpiling and having backups in place decades before the virus was news. Living like this, you quickly learn it's foolish to be running to town for one thing all the time.

Yesterday I spent several hours mowing...I use a walk behind mower for the exercise. It was a beautiful day...birds were out and about, trees were budding, spring in the air. Soon the swallows will return and I'll be hanging their houses.

The point? Even if the worst happens to Cindy or I, life will go on. Humanity will survive. I take comfort in knowing that...

What a great attitude to have. Enjoy the day, every day. You will survive this! Your circumstances make you less of a candidate to contract it. You have the "social distance" part well covered.
