APA Rankings

FLICKit, you do realize that won't happen until late April/early May 2006? OH, and remember, don't bother looking for an s/l 2. Male s/l 2's aren't allowed in higher-level play. Renee should get back to us shortly with a budget. I'm right behind you, pal!

Why wait for 2006?

Can simply look at the photos from the 2005 April/May tournament.

Research can be so easy, if you're smart about it.

Or you can do it your way, track him down, fly half way across the country, and go watch.

To each their own.

Have fun doing it your way...

Wait while I get their phone number. Hmmm, let's see..... It is 1-WAA-MBU-LNCE :D

Maybe I don't remember correctly and he was a 3?? I'm 99% sure he was a 2, but given that I have a bad memory, I'll call my friend and confirm with him, just to make sure I'm not misrepresenting the facts. I can tell you with 100% certainty that he was a 2 or 3 though, I know for a fact he wasn't a 4 or higher.

OK... that's cool.

That's why was asking for more details.

There's a big difference between a skill level 2 and 3. A 3 can very easily run a number of balls in a row, from time to time. That would be expected. A 3 in general, just can't do it with any consistency. He's a beginner level player, learning and progressing in the game just like everyone else. He'll do some things better than others, and some things not as well as others...

When you have more information, you can present it, if you choose.

Until then, anything else on this topic is just becoming wasted bandwidth.

Ahhh... you're talking about the SSSA, Sandbaggers Sandbagged by Sandbaggers Anonymous. Yes, that group exists. Send me $100 and I'll let you in.

Okay seriously, in case you haven't caught on by now, I DON'T CARE! When I leave my office desk, do you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to play pool! Yes, that's right. I'm not going to sweat the handicap of a player in DC. I'm not going to email my LO. I'm not even going to think about YOU. This is the very reason why I say the BCA is about pool and the APA is about the APA. The politics are so rampant that you barely even pick up your own cue!

Ain't that the truth!

You're the one obviously bringing in the politics.

Whereever you are, so will your politics be.

Now that's just stupid. LOL. It's been fun... Cya.

Um, you're the one proposing McCarthy-like tactics. You're taking a post on the internet and turning it into an investigation (mind you, after you suggested the original poster was full of BS). I have one question to ask you: Has there ever been a day in your league when all you thought about was your game instead of your handicap or their's? I mean, you seem to take the APA VERY seriously. What's your s/l? Do you take pool as seriously?

Why are you going so far off-base here?

McCarthy-like tactics - LOL... from simply questioning the validity of a story relayed. He has now made some minor adjustments in this story, which now makes it fall much more likely in the realm of possibility. That's already been acknowledged.

Yeah, all the time. That's what league play is about. As has been stated earlier, dishonest people, usually just wind up hurting themselves. I agree with those posters who have relayed that. It's the philosophy I choose to live by, and will continue to do so. My game has progressed significantly as a result. If I lose, I shake my opponents hand, and congratulate em. Then I just go strengthen my game, so that the next time, the cards may fall in my favor. That's the spirit of true competition. That's what it's all about.

You can try to keep belittling if you choose... Kind of a waste of time, if you ask me. But hey, only one person can put an end to that.

Have fun...

Just for the record, I checked with my friend and the guy was a 3...apologize for the inaccuracy, but I really did think he was a 2. So that means it was actually a 5-2 race, not a 6-2 race. I wouldn't mind 6-3 or even 7-3, but 5-2 is rough man.

Him being a 3 or a 2 doesn't make a whole lot of difference really. I guess my question is how long had he been playing in the APA at the point where you played him? If he was relatively new and lost a few games, then he would have gone down from a 4. If he had been in the APA for a while then I can understand some aggravation.

no clue, it was the first time I'd played in the apa...but I know he played in the tourney the week before. Doesn't really make a difference to me if he's a 2,3, or 5...it doesn't change the fact that I played bad and lost lol

In the end, that is what to take from it. You should have won regardless, and probably would have if you had your "A" game at that time.

FWIW, I'd like to see them change the rules so the skill levels can only go UP.

They could be more judicious with ranking a player but if they are a 6 they stay a 6.

Last night I played a guy I hadn't matched up with for 2 sessions.

Mysteriously, he went from being a 6 to a 4.

Pure BS.

Now I have to give him a handicap?

He got the smackdown, but that's just wrong. Next time, the prick will be thrown on a 3 or 4 and crush them.

I can't think of very many reasonable justifications to lower a players rank, especially when their skill level and motives are so obvious.

I totally agree. Lowering ranks encourages sandbagging.

"Hey, why not sandbag? I will be able to WIN MORE! WINNING IS EVERYTHING!!!!"

Point taken. About never lowering anyone.

But at the same time, people do get over-rated.

Would want to have some way to accurately rate those people as well.

In some other systems, you basically can't go down, and as a result many people get pissed off and leave. Not because they've been sandbagging, but because they know that they can't currently compete at that level. Maybe they'll go off and develop their game, and come back later when they can compete. But, that usually doesn't happen that way. Very unlikely. Once gone, most stay gone from systems like that.

FLICKit, which leagues have you played in?

Those people who find it tougher to win at that level just need to accept that they aren't going to win like taking candy from a baby anymore. Now they need to step up and really play. I will take getting my ass handed to me, and forcing me to improve over easy winning and not improving much any day of the week.

Basically, under virtually every rating system, rising up to the next level is gonna be tougher to win. Since most rating systems don't have a whole bunch of levels (for fine tuned skill adjustments), then coming in at the bottom of the next level is a huge change. Usually results in people knowing that they are gonna lose.

That's where "bouncing a little" can be helpful for those borderline players. They are strong at their own level, so that would be almost too ez. Yet, they are weak at the next level, so that would be sorta too difficult at that time. A little bouncing gives you a chance to understand, learn, and adjust, to the new challenges before having to take it on full time. It helps players to grow and develop and limits the frustrations from the growing pains.

Some of you may resist that and try to rebel against it... There are arguments to most everything... So, you can accept that if you wish, or take the contrary stance if you choose.

People just have to find what works best for them.
