Archer/Varner Clinic in Indy - hard to believe

It is hard to believe that there has been only a little interest so far in the Johnny Archer/Nick Varner Legends and Champions Clinic in Indianapolis next week. Maybe it is DCC hangover, or the economy, or the short notice.

I would remind everyone that this is a GREAT clinic for any amateur player to attend. It will beThursday February 10th; 6 - 10 PM at Magic Billiards, 3125 Kentucky Ave in Indianapolis. Cost is $200 for 4 hours, a real bargain in my view (and I've attended one with Johnny and Earl). Contact Mark Cantrill ("bfdlad") if you want to confirm - 480-612-7732.

I hope the Indiana AZB members will seriously consider attending...I think I missed seeing everyone at DCC. Hope to see you there. Weigh in with your reasons for not attending if you can't make it; it would probably help Mark to know why.

I will be attending...I like pool.

I really hope that clinic goes well. I'm trying to promote those two who'll be here this coming Tuesday and it's been a little tough unfortunately. with the big game, the dcc and the weather... it's tough.

Hard Times in Sacramento had the Archer/Strickland show and got 16 players at $200 each.

Everyone had a great time and all took something away from the 4 hours.
I was able to take a lot of pictures and provide each player a CD of the 4 hours experience.

Once in a Lifetime event and for only $200.

Players will pay $1000+ for a cue and then another $200 for the Z2 or 314 or OB1 shaft but not dish out $200 for a chance to share pool secrets with the PROS.

That may be because a lot of people probably dont' have 200 to spend on a pool clinic at that day at that time. Lessons on the other hand can happen whenever someone wants it and has the money, this is a specific date and time.

IMHO, There isn't a market in Indy for this, at this time. Players are either really really bad and need some individual instruction to get to a level to appreciate Varner/Archer, or they are shortstop speed or close to it, and don't take lessons, or prefer to gamble.

That's because they think the magic is in the latest shaft!

I've had a little more positive feedback from some. It appears that the snow/ice last week prevented the league operators from distributing the info as well as they could have. Nice weather.

I do think that even the shortstops could benefit. One guy in particular would like to have Johnny help with his break...not a bad idea.

There are a lot of one pocket and bank players in town - Nick is a tremendous resource for them (of course all one pocket players think they know everything already so I could be off on this).

Lets say there are 20 people that show up for this. How is this going to benefit me individually? wont i be paying $200 for Archer/Varner to spend 95% of their time with other players?

How would anyone benefit from being 1 of 20 players?

Your math is wrong. 2 of them, 20 of you, 10% rather than 5%.

Still, 1 in 10 at the table with a pro a such stature. Most people would find something to help them. Or you could see how much it would cost to hire them for 1-on-1 time and see where that got you.

Mike...The maximum is 12 people...2 groups of 6. Each group gets 2 hrs with each pro, so you'd be 1 of 6...not 20.

What Scott said is true; max = 12. You could probably make it 11 since I rarely ask questions; just try to soak up what they show others.

Also, during the Archer/Strickland clinic I attended; they divided the students into 2 groups. Two hours with Johnny, then 2 hours with Earl. Each pro had a definite set of things they wanted to show ALL the players (things ALL players of ANY level can work on that are important). They had each player shoot, and then critiqued and individualized the lessons they wanted to convey. A very efficient method; and valuable for those watching as well as those shooting.

Very much worth the time for those that are serious about learning. They've done this before.

DCP, It wont benefit you, everyone has already told you this, you go into everything with an uber negative attitude. I know for 200 you want Johnny and Nick to work with only you while everyone else watches and then they buy you dinner, open your door, retip your shaft, give you one of their sticks, and provide you with lifetime phone support for your stroke.

U-man,
Well.....maybe this is his chance for redemption...it could happen.

I've been exposed to some of the greatest players and instructors in the world. I can say that none of them has any chance of making me a great player - the ONLY person that can do that is ME. All they provide is information, motivation, and support. A player that expects more than that is doomed to failure; a player that realizes that, uses that to realistically approach the game, and has the drive to practice and excel WILL succeed.

Its up to the student, not the teacher. Take every scrap of info you can get; use it properly; and you will get to the level you want. Expect spoon feeding and you will fail miserably. We'll see how DCP responds....maybe its time to "man up."

Nick is one of the most knowledgable pool players in the world.

200 dollars is a steal to be able to pick his brain for a few hours.

When is this clinic anyway? I found another thread about the Varner/Archer Midwest Tour, but i didnt see Indy listed anywhere.

This Thursday (I edited initial post to add the date; the flyer is a .pfd file and won't attach for some reason).

Hope you can make it.

Sounds like a great opportunity. Even the other pros acknowledge that Nick V is one of the best all-around players of all time. He could play all of the games, and there were some years when he seemed to win every tournament he played in! Archer is another one of the most accomplished players around. Both these guys seemed to play tough whether matching up or playing in the tournaments. Sure they have a tremendous amount to offer.

Shux......

As some know i am heavily involved with high school basketball as i am a volunteer asst/scout with a local team. And the bad thing is the girls tournament starts this week so the boys games are on Thursday this week. Which, unfortunately, means i will be sitting in a gym somewhere scouting a high school game this Thursday night.

I get to Owensboro every so often, I might see if i can arrange for a 1 on 1 lesson with Nick. Might be quite entertaining.

Mike

DCP,

In all seriousness, I would call to make sure you can get your 1 on 1 lesson, as I know 2 people in Indy who give lessons, and they are 100% sure they will not give you a lesson even at double the rate because of your incredibly poor attitude. In these tough times that must tell you something.

Any word on how this event went? I would have loved to attend, but $200 for a pool clinic, no matter how awesome, just isn't in the budget at the moment.
