Are you guys serious?

It depends on what the person is eating. A protein bar, a handful of nuts, that's not a big deal. In fact, that's really all that's needed to get a player through a match. There is no need for any player to be eating a meal during a match if they take the time to plan ahead and carry the right supplies with them to the tournament.

If someone could throw me off my game by eating or not paying attention
to my playing....then I feel it's time to learn how to balance a ball on
my nose and join a circus....
....there's always a demand for trained seals...

There are millions of reasons to miss, so if that's what you're looking for,
they're easy to find.

Some people are saying they think it's "lame" or "in poor taste" or "a move" on CD's part to order food during his 14.1 match with MD.

Seriously? I mean have you never eaten during a pool match before? Have you guys even played a pool match before? What the hell is wrong with eating during a match?
I mean if a guy is hungry let him eat! Haha

Having said that, the ONLY way that it would be out of line is if he stood up next to the table and yelled across the establishment to get a waitress or something during his opponents shot but you guys have got to be joking if you think eating = sharking. And lol at Mike Dechaine for even commenting on it. Just more proof...

Sorry I just had to vent this

No...I have never eaten at a professional tournament while playing a match and neither have my opponents. The only thing I would have would be a drink, Tic Tack, or Life Saver. But I would have them with me before the match.

Yes I have played before and not just in your weekly bar table tournament.

The only reason you should have to walk away from a table during a match would be to go to the restroom.

I play my best pool when I'm hungry and don't eat.

You can vent some more...I know you are young and I am old school with old ways.

There's a time to eat and a time to play...seriously.

That is actually a shark move that I pull against during money games. It distracts the other player depending on what I order to eat. Sometimes I get chinese or mexican because the table where we share, I would have an entire spread on the table making my opponent sit elsewhere.

One of the things I like to do is eat and act like I'm not paying attention. So he will sit there and wait till I finish chewing.

I love doing this and have been doing it. I didn't know somebody made a complain publicly about this because I may have to stop doing this if it's a unwritten rule.

I have made a thread on favorite shark tactics and this was one of my favorites. This and excusing myself for a beer in which I will waste time and blame it on the bartender for being busy.

From what I gleaned from watching the match in question and the concomitant digestion, the issue here is not that Mr. Deuel was eating during the match, but in the manner in which he went about it. Mr. Deuel ordered food but he managed to have the server come back to the table multiple times. Food, condiments, cutlery, etc. Why would you want cause "foot traffic" around the table? Not sure but this is a bad move for a pro IMO.

Shaking head...

If I play one of you guys I'm going to order the loudest Dorito chips, and bite them loudly every shot. Then, order 8 cans of soda and open the lids to get that pssss sound.

This wasn't a world championship with tuxedos and international TV played out of a ballroom.

This was a 40 man event, round robin, into a single elimination 32 man field, played out of a local pool room. The camera was fixed on the table. The commentators were joking the whole time to their streaming audience about anything and everything. And it was all done in TWO DAYS! These guys were probably playing non stop.

Shakes head.

I recommend the Sunchips bags that were recalled for being too loud... Yes, that's a real thing. Some kind of environmentally friendly bag, IIRC.

In a non pro event I disagree. A pro event with scheduled match times, common courtesy is expected, but does not always occur. There are a few ''ManChilds'' out there that will ''always'' think they deserve something. In the end they get it. I've also seen many good, very good players look down upon another just because they couldn't play pool very well, the real problem lies within their parenting or lack of.

Eating/ordering food during a match is poor form and possibly (probably) a shark move.

Pool matches don't take that long. Even if you're playing matches back-to-back you can aways ask the TD for 20 minutes to grab a burger. And beyond that, anyone with a modicum of tournament experience knows to look at the board and figure out when they're going to eat.

Lou Figueroa

At what tournament can you get an extra 20 minutes from the TD to grab a bite to eat? The days are so long as it is I've not come across a TD that's inclined to delay a match a half hour so you can fill your belly or take a nap in your car.

I see both sides. If players are being called for matches back-to-back-to-back then the only time to actually eat is during a match. But let's face it, eating while your opponent is playing is bound to be at least a mild distraction. There's going to be at least some noise involved, whether it's the clink of the silverware or the inadvertent fart sound when squeezing out the last bit of ketchup. Perhaps this is something that should be discussed in the players meeting, so whatever is decided is at least understood by all up front.

I don't see anything wrong with what Corey did. This isn't the first time he's eaten during a match. At DCC one year playing Parica he was eating during the match. Didn't seem to bother Parica one bit.

Case in point... Shark moves, unintentional or intentional, only work if you let them.

I saw Tiger Wood eat a banana in between shots during a major

I have also seen MD order and eat food during a match a few weeks ago.

Bill, I'm not sure what you are saying. Are you saying that it's ok to eat a meal during a match if it's in an amateur event without scheduled match times?

No I'm not But

Ya can't stop it....Many times rookie TD's have NO concept of time management & I don't expect it. Often matters change on the flow chart by others who have some power over the TD because they are locals and want this or that, so I became accustomed to this type of behavior. Is it acceptable, might depend on your demographic. Arkansas/Missouri/Oklahoma I'm sure are way diff that NYC. There's a thousand reasons why a promised time is not kept, I expect nothing but common sense, but in a pool room event nothing is a predictable unless the TD is well versed and has Control, Evelyn Dysart comes to mind.

When did men stop being men? Seriously someone is going to cry when their opponent is eating during a match? Suck it up and play. I don't give two sh!ts if someone is eating while playing. I think we have had too much sensitivity training and political correctness. If stuff like this would bother someone then they aren't man enough to handle the pressure.

Well, I hope it's not a demographic thing. It's more like a common courtesy thing, not to mention how much better other alternatives are for them. It's easy enough for a player to make sure they have a supply of meal supplements just that one day or weekend. It's not like it's going to kill a player to do without a cheeseburger for the day. In fact, they may actually feel better.

I think the real issue is in educating the players as to what the better options are. They may even actually learn to like eating healthy snacks throughout the day.

You know, if pool became more serious, you would have more professionals regularly performing physical fitness, and eating a heathy diet. I have been down that path for many years (minus the professional pool part, lol), and I can say in my personal experiences, you eat a lot MORE when you are physically fit and also more OFTEN, then the regular person on the Standard American Diet.

If my experiences are typical of the type of person who is a fitness fanatic, that means if pool were ever to become a serious sport and all of its professionals took extremely good care of their bodies, then eating at a tournament would become an even bigger priority.

I can say from my few visits at DCC, I felt like never going back due to the horrible food selection for someone who wants to eat healthy. I'm just a banger. I can't image what top pros who ALSO take care of themselves (like Thorston) were going through eating the garbage available at the typical "pro tournament"

Just a league tornament but at midwest the last time I played, I could barely take a wiz and they were calling my name for the next match. No chance of getting something to eat at all. Needless to say, from 8am till after midnight all I could get for nourishment was about $100 worth of bud light. What a blur.

There's a time to eat and a time to play...seriously.

I have played a myriad of different levels of events. Have gambled with a bunch of pros too and have been around the game for almost 22 years. I just don't sweat the small stuff like some people I guess, if that makes me new school then you old timers need to sign up! :-)

But just cuz you haven't doesn't mean others shouldn't and I need more than a protein bar when my sugar is off, just one more thing to consider if you will.

Some folks have a tendancy to focus on their opponents actions way too much, the one thing these people have in common is they are all losers(sorry it's true). If you're affected by an eating opponent then you really should find another game to take up.

no venting in this post, just some solid statements. Some factual, some opinionated, all from experience ;-)
