Ask The Cuemaker Topic

I was told that one of the problems in finishing ash is that the wood hardness varys accross the grain so keep sanding to a minimum, as this will cause uneven removal of material.
But you already knew that anyway ;)

That would be great, we meet last year at VF, but it was brief, as you had a line of people begging for repairs lol, and seeing your Connoisseur Collection in person was a real treat, thoughts of clocking you in the head and running were running through my head :), but i do not yet know if i will be going to VF this year, work dried up late last year, when i was planning on saving and reserving everything in advance and getting some money built up, but i most likely will not be able to afford it this year. I might just drive up there, get a room for the night, browse the booths, hit with some cues, and go home lol, but i can't drink... :) it's illegal...

Thanks

Meeting In Vf

Blud And Jon,
I'm Not A Cue Builder Nor Do I Have The Patience Yet For Such A Craft, But I Would Like To Meet With Both Of You In Vf If Possible. I Know Where Blud Wil Be, Jon If You Want, Let Me Know A Few Days Before If You're Going Or Not, I Will Pm You With My Cell Number. I Will Be There From Weds. Night Until Sunday.

Blud,
I Will Bring My Shaft Along To Valley Forge, We Can Set Something Up There To Have At Least 1 Ash Shaft Built. Do You Think It Would Be Better With An Ivory Ferrule? If So What Would That Add To The Price?

Well, let me set one thing straight, in some peoples opinions i'm not a cue maker, because i haven't yet completed a cue, the closest thing i have right now, is one that i am about to put the joint pin in (uni-loc radial), sand down and apply the finish, and then i have a few more that are in progress, and the cue isn't perfect, i didn't expect it to be, i started it in january of last year, with no real cue making equipment or knowledge (just winging it), i mean i had a lathe and such, but no taper attachment or decent steady rest, but i have those now :) (a nice little bearing steady rest, made from a block of aluminum and a pulley from an 8-track, it's amazing what you can find in a junk yard :D) and i'm rolling with it, but in that year of waiting on equipment problems, i've learned more than most people that have been building cues for years, and oh man, if i had only known then, all the things i know now, i wouldn't be planning on making an exact copy of this first cue, and try to get it perfect... for one thing... no vulcanized fiber rings... (too unstable), and no metal rings, and it's kind of a shame, because they are so pretty :(, but i'll just have to find another nice ring design, i'll try to attach a pic of the rings i put on a test dowel... well anyway, i'll talk to some people, and see if i can go to VF, and maybe we can set a time to meet at blud's booth, and i'll try to stear clear of bob meucci's booth this year, last year, i was standing between his, and the predator booth... my head was spinning, Bob Meucci almost sold me on one, and i was just listening in... that man could sell $hit to a perfume shop...

Thanks

Jon

Jon,
Bring your cue you are working on. Maybe I can give you a few pointers and help you out with some tricks of the trade. Be more than happy to help you, sir.

Blud, what do you think about sleeving ivory joints with phenolic?
Do you think it makes it more durable? How about the hit?
Do you rather make it threaded and capped?
Thanks.

Hi Joseph, very good question.

I cap my ivory ferrules, and drill a weep hole in the middle and also score the face with two small glue rings. I also, thread my ivory joints, and score them as well for glue reliefe rings, and sleeve the butt plates, and score the tenon for glue pockets..

Point of interest for you folks..
Hell of a phone call a while back!
I had a top high-end [ so called cuemaker] cuemaker call me and needed my help. I said what is the problem? He was complaining about his sleeved ivory joints cracking. He said he had 5 of 5 crack. My question was how much relife are you allowing for and how tight is the sleeve going on. He said it slips on with the glue real nice. I, then ask him if he used the same slug of Ivory on each one of them. His reply was yes, and his reply was, but what does that have to do with it?

I said , DUH, the same slug, and all crack the same. This means your slug is cracked internally. He didn't even say thanks, kiss my ass or what ever. He said bye, and hung up. He never called me back, so i assume i was dead on with the problem.. I guess he was a little imbarrassed. High-end cuemaker, who can't draw his ball or run 3 balls. We now know about his cues, don't we?
Please, cuemaker my ass.

BLUD,
IT SEEMS THAT NO MATTER WHAT BUSINESS YOU'RE IN PEOPLE ALWAYS WANT FREE HELP, AND THEN DON'T EVEN APPRECIATE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE FOR THEM. PEOPLE AREN'T GOING TO CHANGE, AND IT'S A SHAME BECAUSE AFTER BEING TREATED LIKE THAT A FEW TIMES YOU DON'T WANT TO HELP ANYONE. I AM IN A DIFFERENT FIELD BUT TOTALLY UNDERSTAND HOW THAT CAN JUST RUIN YOUR DAY, AND YOUR OUTLOOK ON PEOPLE.

sometimes the best of em get brain farts blud,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,im not a cue maker, but i did work in a body shop when i was younger. a local cuemaker was having problems with his finish soaking in a few years back. i asked him what his thinner was and wiped down the area with thinner, and told him to spray it while it was still wet. he did and wound up with a glass like finish. some times ppl can learn from someone who isnt a pro, but has common sense. btw i still kid him about that

Blud's pin

> Will you describe this internal grinding technique, along with the required tooling? A thread mill perhaps? At first I thought about emailing you and hitting you up for one of your joint pins, but actually having one so I can copy it would be pointless,LOL. I learn a LOT from posts like these here and on the other forums, provided we can keep all the childish crap to a bare minimum. I have MANY questions, perhaps we can converse this weekend, school and work pretty much take up all my time during the week. Thanks again,Tommy.

Blud, do you believe in these flat laminated cores and handles?
It seems like everyone's selling and using them.

Blud, it's interesting that you just explained how to install an ivory ferrule, as I just got some in the mail I had ordered, I just want to be clear on one thing, could you explain what you mean by "score the face with two small glue rings". I know how to make a ferrule from blank material (5/16-18 thread-3/16 cap ((give or take a few thousands)), and all of the facing involved) but I was told by one person, to use super glue, in detail, tape off the glue relief hole, sit the ferrule open end up, fill it with super glue, and coat the tennon, and let both sit for a couple of minutes, and then screw on (removing tape first) and that would be a good bond (not as much stress as epoxy), I’m guessing that you use epoxy, is there a "best way" to do it, and not compromise the integrity of the ivory???

Thanks

Jon
