Attending a wedding vs. going to a pool tournament.

There is a very simple formula for weddings vs. tournaments. Just add up each side and see which has the biggest percentage. ;)

Wedding

Bride or groom is not related - 10%
Bride or groom is a distant friend or relative - 20%
Bride or groom is an acquaintance or is a closer relative that you don't like - 30%
Bride or groom is a friend, (but you don't hang out together) or spouse's distant relative, or a close friend's immediate family - 50%
Bride or groom is a close friend or cousin - 70%
Bride or groom is your best friend or immediate family - 85%
Bride or groom is you - 100% :p

Tournament

Tournament is a weekly tournament with a $5 entry - 10%
Tournament is a regional weekend tournament, but is far away with expenses and/or you don't care for the people or room there - 20%
Tournament is close but the entry fee is high and you don't have much chance in the field - 30%
Tournament is close, entry fees are manageable, and you have a chance to place - 50%
Tournament is close, entry fees are manageable, and you are prepaid, and you have a chance to place - 70%
Tournament is close, entry fees are manageable, and you are prepaid, and you have a chance to place with pros in attendance - 85%
Tournament is a pro tournament, Derby City, or any major tournament and one where you have already paid for a flight and hotel OR any regional tournament and above where you are a favorite to win - 100%

If the scores are close or tied, go with the one that is going to score you the most intangible points, ie. going to the wedding will score points with a relative or friend ;) or you can invite a new girlfriend, etc. or you have a good chance to win the tournament.

Please print this out, fold it up and put it into your wallet for future reference. :p

I was wondering what the consensus was here on AZ concerning the proper way to handle a certain situation like when should you choose going to a wedding over going to a pool tournament?

Should you give up going to a pool tournament because a friend is getting married? OK, maybe depending on how close you are to that person but what if the person is more of an acquaintance. Should you just send a gift or is your attendance still mandatory.

What about relatives? You know the distant cousins and brother in laws nephews and nieces. Should you give up a good tournament to attend a wedding? Where do you draw the line? I'm sure everyone here would attend their daughter or son's marriage but I would hope the son or daughter would have checked with dad before selecting the DCC tournament dates.

What about showing up at the wedding or the reception for a few minutes just to show your face. After all, who's going to miss you at the wedding especially if you sign the guest register, send a gift and put in a quick smile at the bride and groom then head back to the tournament where you would be sorely missed.

Does your wanting to attend a nice fun tournament make you into a bad guy if deep down you prefer to go to the tournament instead of the acquaintance/friend's wedding?

And no its not about me. I'm just writing for someone else who is having trouble making up his mind.

Can't he talk them into postponing the wedding? Soumds reasonable.

Stones passed on a tournament 3 years ago to go to his sons wedding. I'm still pissed.

Bonuses of the wedding friends looking foward to the future.

Bonuses of pool tourney inspiration from the professionals.

Do you feel lucky? Do ya?

It's bothering you so you should go to the wedding.

It's not bothering me a bit Jim. I'm going to the tournament. I don't even know the wedding party. This is all about a pal who has been looking forward to competing in this tournament and he has a chance to win it all. My post was simply to give him a few windows to look through as he makes his plans.

Based upon the SAGE advice he got on this forum (he's a lurker) he will be making the right decision.

Besides, he always makes the right decision even without comments from his peers, sometimes in spite of them. ;)

Whatever he decides, the theme is excellent for a Captain Morgan's commercial. (missing the wedding to go to the tournament). Captain Morgan, made with Puerto Rican Rum.....

.....an unpaid commercial........

I think we just solved his dilemma - see the purple text. :p

;-)

Anyone who even has to ASK this question is not a true Pool player.

Plus it's unforgivably rude for the groom to have not checked the tournament schedule prior to booking the wedding. At the very least they could have booked the reception in the Pool hall the tournament is being played in.

I say send them a framed photo of winning the tournament as a wedding present. If they are true friends it'll mean more to them than a dumb old blender.

;-)

The 'Appliances' Outlast The Marriages.... imo

Whoa ! Don't put down blenders. I still have one from one of my earliest marriages and it still works just fine.

( going to make a Strawberry Daquiri now.... and a Sardine Daquiri for Joey A. )

Good Idea!

I have to pass this on to the troubled young man. Good idea. Some green for you. :D

I would imagine even a token picture of his outcome in the tournament and a footnote about the amount of money he COULD HAVE WON, might assuage the bride and groom's injured pride.
