AZ Forum out of control...

CB- I agree that there a lot more quality people on here than not! You are one of the ones I really enjoy reading about. Thank you!

Pharoah- sarcastic or not, I'm not sure! But this is exactly what I'm referring to. Is AZBilliards forum billiard related???? Wasn't my topic about AZBilliards forum????

Zim-

Actually I was, in fact, being sarcastic.

I hear ya 100%. Here's the solution. Abandon AZ as anything other than a means of passing time. Got something you wanna sell? Go to AZ. Looking to buy a cue? Go to AZ. Nothing to do at work? See what some of the idiots here are talking about and have a good laugh at their expense.

What you could do is try this....

http://www.jimboarmy.com/phpbb3

You'll recognize a ton of names over there as a lot of them used to post here. Some of them still do. And over there, the rules aren't as severe. You can talk about whatever you want, whenever you want. It really ain't half bad.

Hope to see you there.

These people trip me out. For everyone who feels there are no longer quality posts here on AZB.... How about you enlighten all of us with your infinite wisdom and start some threads that give us all an epiphany with your "need to know" billiard knowledge?

If a respected long-time poster has a life scare - whether it be cancer or indigestion, I wanna read about it in the main forum because who the hell reads the other forums?

See a post that doesn't interest you? Don't read it. Now, that doesn't mean open it, analyze it to death, post about how it's a joke and in the wrong section, and then complain elsewhere. Simply skip it.

In conclusion, I can't remember when I enjoyed this forum more than I do now.

Thats the best post I have seen in a long time, if AZ sucks leave. There is alot of good stuff is posted everyday.

I've been and active member on this forum since 2003 and have seen alot of great posts and a lot of rediculous posts.

Moderators are trying to keep things on the up and up and flowing well on here, but some people are just asses! There are dedicated sections for various types of posts, this I personally like. It helps with clutter and organization.

Recently in the Main Forum a thread was started by another senior member about a cancer survivor and what happens... he's criticized by a relatively new poster because it's in the wrong or inappropriate section!!! This is outright BS!!!

If we are going to jump down someones throat for this type of post, yet still let others continue to bash others because they don't spell well, build cues the same way, teach a different system, charge more for this/that, have 1/2 naked avatars, etc...what has this forum coming to?

Who gives a crap if the person can't type perfectly, who cares if he/she uses a different type of glue on cue repairs, sets his/her prices too high or too low. When I came on this forum originally, there was tons, I mean TONS of quality posts to read and educate yourself on various billiard related subject matter. I have been a very active participant on this board and rarely, rarely post negative comments about things, I just keep them to myself. If you don't have something nice to say, don't say it.

However, on the flip side of that last sentence, I do like the threads that warn us of bad dealers, repairman, players, tournament directors, etc. But, that's information that needs to be out there to the public.

If you're going to post, it should be able to help the readers in a positive way, not just be some BS post that is 100% a negative PERSONAL opinion about someone.

Enough said, I feel better,
Zim

Rep for an honest post. AZ is still a great place with a lot of knowledgeable and friendly people. However, it seems there are a few out there don't respect others opinions, but get on everyone who do not agree with theirs. I was taught a long, long time ago, 'that if you have nothing good to say, don't say anything at all.' I think some posters could take this advice. Strong opinions are one thing, but putting others down and name calling is another. It is a internet forum for God's sake! It is kind of like internet poker. I see plenty of people play way differently then they do in real life, because it is on the internet and nobody can actually see the person who plays like a monkey. I know that most of the posters are the same in real life, but for some, the touch of a keyboard must give them superior knowledge and insight into everything. That being said, I love AZ!:D

Forum out of control

There are a few nice ways to police ourselves and tell or suggest to someone that they posted in the wrong area of the forum.

There a millions of ways to tell someone incorrectly they posted in the wrong area of a forum - and a bunch of these will get forum members banned.

If there is any doubt on what a proper post is - the person responding could simply shoot a PM to the moderators and tell them their concern on post in the wrong area and let the moderators handle it.

I did not see the response to the post (or original post) you referenced - though - to figure out whether it is inappropriate or not. I doubt I will try and hunt it out.

If I did not enjoy the reading and participating on the forum, I would do something else - like break out a magnifying glass and burn some ants.

Mike has some nice points and his personal opinion. Even though I have been guilty of placing an NPR post in the Main Forum, I make a conscious effort to avoid doing that most of the time.

The AZ Forum has never been better but that is my perspective.

New, quality posters like Dr. Dave have made the migration and enjoy popularity and quality responses to their posts.

New posters seem to pop up here on a regular basis.

I think people are tiring of posting in forums where there is no civility and posters are allowed to bash one another until one cries uncle or simply disappears.

I see far less of the visciousness that used to take place on this very forum. Many banned posters deserve the banning and the moderators have done an excellent job in banning those who deserve to be banned.
The moderators have a thankless job in my opinion but I do appreciate the way that they are doing their job.

I too enjoy hearing about the personal trials and tribulations of regular posters who have contributed positively to this forum over a period of time. As long as posters new or old, remember that this is the Main Forum and it is primarily about billiards, I have no problem with a tangent that is important to them but that which has nothing to do with billiards.
I'm flattered that there are people here who feel comfortable enough to on occasion talk about their own personal lives.

Mike Zimmerman rarely complains about other posters and rarely admonishes anyone. I think he's made his point and that it was primarily a vent but I could be wrong.

AZ Billiards is an evolving entity and I'm sure Mike Howerton never dreamed that it would take on the life that it has now and he should be very proud. It is truly the best forum on the planet and our neighbors from across the world who join us in discussion prove this every single day.

Like any meeting place, there will be bad eggs that attempt to spoil a good time for others but they will be dealt with appropriately by the firm, steady hand of the moderators and the owner of this site.

This thread has got me thinking about something else and I'll start a new thread so as not to hijack this one. That is an easy thing to do: hi-jacking a thread but something that happens on a regular basis because it is the flow of conversation, just like it is in the real world. Does it bother me when someone starts talking about something else besides my subject of interest in my threads? No, not really because that is the natural order of things. I appreciate the varied interests that each of us has and hope that others will continue to show respect to the Main Forum and use good judgment in trying to stay on track with their posts, threads and responses to posts from others.

AZ Billiards can improve and it is posts and perspectives like Mike's and SpiderWebComm that represent the varied feelings of members with different perspectives that helps to mold AZ into the forum that it is today.

I also hope that members continue to make their opinions known and do do civily so that we can continue to learn how to get along with one another.

Like the changes that take place in a person's life, the evolution of AZ Billiards is a marvel to behold.

With all due respect.. there are asses everywhere. One has emerged here at AZB. Just remember, in the end, 98% of the asses has been removed by the management in due time. I recommend ignoring them/him/her.

With that said, I have found that valuable contributions have dropped over the past 6-12 months. By that I mean, insight into the game, discussions on fundamentals, patterns, stories from old-timers etc. I hope to see more meat in the forum rather then bickering over the upcoming weeks and months.

All the best to 98% of the people here :)

Well said, JoeyA. I know there are two AZB factions. I happen to be on the "STFU, enjoy the site, and stop being an AZB cop" faction. There are also the "teacher's little helper" faction who try to police the forum on their own. People either assimilate into one or the other or they run away.

Hey, talking about running away.... when are you and the Gingerbread Man playing? I wanna see that in the next Action Challenge Under-card. :D

First, I have to address the complete inaccuracy of part of your post. I was the poster that supposedly "criticized" the "cancer survivor." I have been a member here for two years making good contributions to this site, and am near the very top in reputation points. I hardly think that makes me new as you said. I have only recently decided to be more vocal about my concerns with the off topic threads and the decline of the board in general. Furthermore, I have been lurking on this site almost daily for another 8 years or so before that, so I have probably been around here longer than 95+% of people. Not that I think any of this is all that relevant, but it seems to be a big deal to you.

He made a post saying that he just found out that a recent medical concern he had was confirmed to not be cancer. He also said that he really doesn't care what anybody thinks about him making the post even though he knows it is against the forum rules. My response was to simply express my genuine happiness for his good news, and then politely point out that it was indeed in the wrong section and that while he may not care what anybody thought, the moderator had recently emphasized that the rule needed to be followed. I provided the link to the sticky thread about it. That was it. The only thing that could even be considered anywhere close to "outright BS" would be his blatant disregard of the moderator's directive--not my response.

I agree with most of the rest of your post. This site has gone downhill in content and quality over the years. It used to be that it was almost impossible to keep up with the main forum because there were so many threads, and almost all of them were very informative, interesting, and relevant. Now the quality as well as the amount of content is down.

I truely believe that a lot of the reason that the forum is no longer full of quality posts is because they let things get too out of hand and did not enforce against things like the off topic posts, as well as all the posts that had no real purpose other than to be mean spirited. As a result a lot of good posters have left completely, some of the other good posters are still here but now rarely post, and some of the others are still posting but their own posting standards went down along with the board in general. I miss the AzBilliards of old.

For the record, I disagee with the poster who thought this thread was off topic. Any post that primarily intends to inform, or to provoke thought and discussion about pool, or the forum in general, is on topic.

A lot of people like myself never check the non pool related forum. If somebody is having a health issue and is looking for some support and prayers I can't see why someone would object to a post on the main forum. There are 25 topics on the first page, that's room enough for a post like that. If I ever need some help I would hope a few people would put in a word for me with the man upstairs.

I'm not sure what else Mike was referring to but I agree with him on that one.

You've been in some kind of a zone now for over a month! ANOTHER great post!

People get out of AZB what they put into it.

Robert, you're right about the ways you can tell a person that their post is in the wrong forum. The admonishment can be very civil if a person wanted it to be......and it should be civil.

If a post is out of line, you can simply click on the word "bad" at the bottom of every post and it will be reported to the moderators. No need for a PM. The bad post reporting is quick and effective.

First ants, then cats and dogs, after that it's all downhill for humanity.
(j/k as I know you were)
