Az Get Together

Hmmmm...

They say Atlanta's Airport is the hub to the world ... Not sure why but I think it has something to do with where it is located in terms of North / South ... East/West in regards to the rest of the U.S.A.

Still pretty excited at this idea just the thought of being in the same room with so many people that love this game and have experienced the game ... Just to get to talk to them and put faces to names and try to learn more about this game is a chance of a lifetime... From players to Cue makers to historians ... I wonder if anyone will set up like a vendor or bring a small sample of cues and pool related items to sell... Would not be a bad idea ...

This is a great idea and if it works out I hope I can arrange to be there. This is not the best time for most of us with the economy in the shape it's in and the high gas prices, but maybe a lot of us can make it.

What a great time to be working for myself.....Can I come to all events?? My bag is packed. I'll be the roving reporter. It's a great time to go economy wise. I think you can't lose anymore than you have. Oops

That is why some of us are not voting for Vegas. I got lost there once for 18 days and it changed my life. I said I Never wanted to go to Reno but for this, anyplace but vegas. There is good food and good scenery everywhere and when do we ever look for it. You never know. But I have seen that Dam.(Hoover something)

WestCoast...Tahoe is sooo pretty. Anytime after the snow melts.

I had a crazy idea yesterday. There are so many good players who post on here, why not have an annual get together, with an All Around tourney thrown in. I'm thinking $100 entry fee into each division, maybe One Pocket, 9-Ball and Banks. No added money, we just play for the entry fee money. Keep it fun but with a little purse to go after.

I thought about Colorado since it is centrally located. It doesn't have to be there though. If Jim McDermott liked it, we might be able to do it at his poolroom in Tulsa. And he can play too. He plays good by the way.

I see it as a big pool party, with some spirited competition thrown in. I'd love to meet all the good players who post here. I suspect I will recognize most of you. Ironman, Blackjack and Island Drive are already down for this. Who else?

Okay, tell me what you think.

From skimming all the threads, it seems like one meeting is out of the question.

Have 4 divisions - east, mid-east, mid-west, west.

8 ball, or 9 ball only.

$100 entry fee.

The 4 winners would go to some place cheap (their tickets being subsidized by the original $100 entry fee), like Vegas, for the playoffs. Or during the DCC or US Open.

Be realistic.

Jam are you the one that posted that article on Ray town... That is the place I was refering to in my first post on this thread (Could'nt remember the name)... I would like to see that place also that article reminded me some of the pool room I grew up learning to play in ... The article brought back alot of memories of a place and people I have not seen since 86 many of the people I'm sure are not on this earth anymore .... That would be a great place to have it ... That was a awesome piece... It seems like the first AZ get together should be in a place like that somewhere special ... Though I would prefer Atlanta for location seeing I live in South Georgia ....Raytown would be awesome ....

It is a very cool place, but I don't think it would be big enough. Raytown might have a lockdown if a herd of AZers came through! :D

Check out post #8

Here's a link to a picture of Raytown Rec & the owner (didn't get his name).

I say everyone who is interested should vote for a first, second and third choice of locations. We can go from there to the planning stages.
Jay,
Know this brain child is yours but ....Mike is AZb "master"; perhaps we need to hear from him on location? Know that he is a private person but many of us know him and I'm sure he would attend the "party" of poolers he helped bring together with his masterful ways.

Sounds like a sensible idea to me. :D

My picks:

1. Dallas
2. Tulsa
3. Phoenix

Realistically the chances of me making it to anywhere other than Dallas are slim but those are my choices.

I think the idea of making this an annual/ moving event is great. I've thought about it myself before so I'm pleased to see it suggested. We did a get together for local AZBer's in the DFW area a year ago & had a very enjoyable day (I'm sure JDB will agree.) I can only imagine how good it'd be with folks coming from all over the country!

If I can't make it I know I'll be sitting at home waiting for reports!

Well, we just got home from a day of busy and have another one tomorrow, since it's Mom's Day.

From the numbers I got, The 3 top preferred locations (pretty much tied) are:

Anywhere
Tulsa
Atlanta

Oklahoma also got 2 votes.

So, I would think you would want to pick from the 2 locations listed, or take Mikie up on his offer. I know I can't do Atlanta or San Diego. I can talk to one or two of the local room owners we think might be up for this, tomorrow afternoon. Personally, as much as I'd be glad to help with this thing, I think having a room owner who is offering to host the show is a pretty good deal, if he's got the room, a good location (safe, respectable part of town, etc.), a major airport, and good motel/hotel rates with locations within walking distance.

Mikie, how much are you willing to do to make this happen, if they take you up on it? Do you have someone who can help work on it?

If you guys decide to do a CENTRAL get-together, let me know and I'll do everything I can to help out, especially if it's to be in Tulsa, because I can easily drive to wherever I need to go to get things done. Would love to meet up with a lot of you guys, but it may have to be at the SBE or another AZ get-together, when one comes this way. We do one big trip per year and that's SBE. So, anything else will have to be within about a 12 hour drive from Tulsa.

To all of you... if you really do want this thing to happen, MAKE SURE that you have someone actually organizing it. Don't just say you want to have it here or there and expect it to happen. SOMEONE has to work at it to set up date, place, events, etc.. There's a lot involved with organizing an event and most folks can do it, if they really want to. You just have to use your noggin and figure out what's needed and go from there. Feedback helps, but you have to be able to make a decision on your own, too.

Gotta go. The rest of the weekend is waiting for me. The "mom" of this family says the day will be spent in church and at the pool hall, teaching the granddaughter to play pool, so tomorrow will be a very busy day!

It's pretty hard to get people to do some small money gambling at the DCC, let alone a pool tournament for AZers. There was one guy from Louisville, who offered to host an AZ pool tournament but got cold feet when some AZers made suggestions as to how it should be organized.

I would love to meet some new AZers. Jason Laus just spent some time here in NOLA and we had a good time and hit a few balls together.

The regional stuff makes better sense, especially money wise. I like to play in pool tournaments and enjoy a little side action but that is second to me competing in the tournaments. It seems to be more practical if you have the AZ tournaments at some of the larger national tournaments where a lot of AZers might show up.

It is always a challenge to play some pool with the GingerBread Man. :-)

My top three would be:

No. 1: Kansas City, Don Brink's pool room, Raytown Recreation Center.
No. 2: Q-Master, Norfolk, Virginia, Barry Behrman's pool room.
No. 3: Southern Billiards, Starkville, Mississippi

JAM

Since the U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship is held at Q-Masters and most AZers won't be playing in the tournament and just sweating, that location might be nice to coordinate a tournament.

I like the AZ Room at Derby City Classic in Louisville, KY.

Fast Mikie's Del Mar house has a great view and NICE table.

I can't think of any rooms near Dallas that have ample 9 foot tables. Maybe we could do a barbox tourney... lol! :p

Where's a good place that has 9 foot tables and stadium seating?

Fort Walton Beach Florida, Starcade Billiards has the most comfortable chairs in the country and good playing equipment to boot.

I like the idea of having it at Johnny's room. A LOT! I guess most of you guys live back East. I used to drive that far for good action, so I guess I can still fly. :)

I drove back and forth across the country six times when I was in my 20's. Haven't done it since. The last time I was 32 in 1978. Yes, I'm that old!

Maybe Johnny Archer would provide us AZers with a little pro pool instruction.
