Az Get Together

Ooooohhh, saw Mikie's fun house! Check it out ..... http://www.michaelmccafferty.com/MFH4.htm

I vote for Mikie's!!!! I need a vacation from the crazies at work! I'll bring the Frisbee.... :D Do you think you will have enough room for all the AZBers, there is a lot of us?

I've got plenty of Frisbees, but only one table. The way I figure it, we can shoot pool around the clock, and those who are not on the table will probably want to check out the beach, or world famous Torrey Pines golf course (public), or Sea World, or just snooze in the Fun House hammock, or maybe even check out the local pool halls for some action (I have NO gamble myself, but I'll look the other way if there's cash on the light).

The key point I'd like to make is that it is unlikely that a big bunch of AZ shooters will make the trip to San Diego just for an AZ get together. Maybe those people in SoCal would do it, but the farther away they are, the less likely they will be to travel that far (Even for Mikie's Fun House).

So my vote would be to have regional get-togethers during the year, and maybe one big, honkin' rowdy party at DCC... hold on, that's in the dead of winter, isn't it? Count me out on that one. I don't do COLD. :)

You can count me in as I got retired again Friday and will just be drawing a little unenployment for a few months.--Leonard

tournament

why not have a tourney for all the centrally located spots and use some of the prize fund to send like winner and runner up in the all around to a fourth championship tournament. that way more people would have closer spots to go for an az tournament and someone could be crowned the az world champion. what ya think, you could get a world title thru azbilliards!! i would think az might want to kisck something in. just an idea. i would come if it was withing 6 hour drive or so. long weekend type thing. just my opinion though.

Wow ...

Nice place you have there Mike .... Your a lucky man ...

Johnny's place sounds great to me ... Maybe we can even get FatBoy to hit him up for us..lol ... It would be sweet if he was there that would be a awesome person to meet ... Everywhere I go here in GA. where there is a pool table sooner or later someone is going to bring up Johnny Archer... He is a great representative for the state of Georgia and pool all together... My favorite pool player has always been Nick Varner .. Of course Rex Case the man who taught me the game was born and grew up in Owensborro , Ky...and use to go to Nicks pool room there. And often talked about Nick Varner like they were friends and claimed to know Nick and his Dad .. We went to Vegas once to watch him and I was blown away by how nice Nick was and how kind he was to us ... I had kind of thought Rex was blowing wind about knowing Nick but Nick picked him out of the crowd and new him by name and spent alot of time with us ... So I guess it is natural for my favorite player to be Nick Varner ... But Johnny Archer is a close second ... I have a good friend that is very good at pool who thinks Johnny Archer could walk on water ... He worships the ground Archer walks on...

He swears that Archer plays with a Schon ... He refers to as a Skon ... Does anyone know if this is true ? I thought he played with Scorpion seeing he promotes them.

Didn't peter out...

Sorry to see this thread peter out without resolution.

Ideas, anyone?

The thread didn't peter out. There was a holiday weekend in which Mom gets all the attention, not the computer. (Ever tried to argue about that? That's a lost cause!) Then, some of us couldn't get to the forum for about 24 hours, partly due to the forum being down.

I was planning to discuss this with a couple of local pool halls this weekend, but the ones we were going to decided to be closed during the times we wanted to go. So, give us until next Saturday night and Sunday, when we make our visits to the pool halls. Earlier, if we have the chance.

I'll be back with more info by Sunday night. Nobody else seems to be jumping up and down to organize an event, so I'll try my best to get something going.

In the meantime, when do we want to do this? I'm figuring while the kids are out of school and most of the leagues are on summer vacation???? Maybe an August event? Whta do you guys think? August would hopefully give me time to get some planning done, since I've never organized an event quite like this one, before.

You still in, Jay? I'm definitely going to need a little help figuring out what I'm doing. :D

St. Louis!!!

There are several Casinos, hotels, motels, restaurants, Lambert IAP, metro link (subway style) and metro link buses for transportation that can get you pretty close to most pool rooms. We've got Anheiser Busch Brewery, the Arch, Riverfront, 6 Flags, Zoo, and many other attractions for the spouses to visit while the other half is playing in the pool tournament!

I run the Gateway Amateur Tour in several of the pool rooms in this area and have a good business relationship with the owners. We have a few rooms that could accomodate this event.

I think a mixture of 8 ball and 9 ball for the main event would be good and a couple smaller events of One Pocket, Banks, 14.1 could be possible. I'm not a big fan of the $100 entry fee, maybe $50-$60 per event, plus a calcutta! I'll take care of running a tournament in St. Louis if it's chosen.

Thanks and let's get something going!

They say Atlanta's Airport is the hub to the world ... Not sure why but I think it has something to do with where it is located in terms of North / South ... East/West in regards to the rest of the U.S.A.

Still pretty excited at this idea just the thought of being in the same room with so many people that love this game and have experienced the game ... Just to get to talk to them and put faces to names and try to learn more about this game is a chance of a lifetime... From players to Cue makers to historians ... I wonder if anyone will set up like a vendor or bring a small sample of cues and pool related items to sell... Would not be a bad idea ...
Sir King, No offense, but you really need to work on your geography if you think Atlanta is centrally located. (however it is centrally located if you're flying from Germany to Hawaii) Nice try though.

I'm thinking that the regional events with one final event might be the way to go.

If we have four events, and then a final meet up at the end I think that you would get a lot more interest. What we could do is have four regional AZ tourney's so that more people could come at $50 entry for each event, then have a final event that is $100 entry for each event in Vegas where the four winners are seeded and their entries are paid but the rest of the AZers that can make it can still enter. I think that gives the opportunity for those that can't travel as readily to come to the local events, but the final event isn't only the four winners. You can have TAR broadcast the semi's and on of the final event in Vegas.

Are you offering to organize these events, Jaden? You can talk all day long about what a wonderful thing you want to get going and all the great ideas you have, but if you have nobody to do it, you're just spinning your wheels and adding to the frustration of nothing ever happening. Come up with all these great locations that accomodate everyone and find organizers to make those events happen and everyone will be happy.

well. let's see...

I don't have enough time to organize them by myself, but I would be willing to work with some people on it. I think that it would probably be best to have people who are used to organizing these types of events in their respective areas. I think Jay would be willing to organize the west coast and maybe even the Las Vegas event. How about it Jay? I would be willing to help in any way I can.

Are there any volunteers for the other respective areas?

I hope you get someone to organize. When our boys were young, we signed them up in the new flag football league. The two oldest were in 3rd/4th grade age group. They had coaches for all the teams, except one. Guess what team our boys were on? Almost all the parents said they'd HELP coach, but nobody wanted to be the head coach. They were about to disband the team, when we decided to try. We had never seen a flag football game to know the rules. We studied up and learned the game and even though our team wasn't first place, the boys on our team knew the rules better than just about any of the others, because we were very serious about making sure we did it right, if we were going to take it on.

The whole purpose of that story was to show everyone that if nobody will stick their neck out and take on the things they want done, things just don't happen. The boys might not have won the season, but they had a team, because someone cared enough to make sure it happened.

You can have all the great ideas and all the great helpers in the world, but without a leader --- someone who will stick their neck out and take that chance --- nothing will ever happen.

I only offered to do this thing, because I've got a fairly busy background of organizing family and community events, even though none of it has been pool-related. But, while you guys have been tossing ideas back and forth, I got bored and found something else to do with my summer.

I hope you guys get something going and I hope it's close enough I can go. I'd love to meet some of the folks I chit-chat with all the time.

There's an obvious solution to this to make it easier for everyone...

Which two events have an AZ room all week, are probably the two biggest pool gatherings in the US, and are kinda East and West (well sort of!)?

The BCA event in Vegas, and DCC.

Just have two events, and the winner of each plays each other (somewhere!). These rooms could easily hold an event over the week and it would ensure a decent crowd of onlookers.

Just a thought...

You know, I would love to see the AZ get-together at DCC.

It's not likely to be successful because, no one goes to the DCC at the same time and few people go for the whole duration. If that's not bad enough, when there, AZers are stretched to their limits with the Action Room, their tournament matches, the pros tournament matches and the eating and celebration that goes with it, when you receive a Get Out of Jail Pass from the Suprug.

It's kind of hard to get everyone together for a tournament but the AZ Room is a good way to match up screen names with faces.

TheUnitaryValue,
As Jay and Joey have pointed out (and as I'm sure the vast majority of DCC veterans will agree); DCC already has FOUR TIMES AS MUCH POOL AS ANY ONE PERSON CAN HANDLE.

It would be a distraction in a week already full of "once a year" experiences. If you will suck it up and attend this year; you will see what we mean (though, this will be the first year at a new venue; perhaps you should suck it up the following year to be safe....that gives you a full year and a half to find the nerve).

Hehe, and here's me thinking you was going to offer to host the "final" at your palace too! :p

I'll take your word for it, just thought this would be easier to organize than just some random place not on the calendar.

Wanted to go to DCC but sadly I'm now perm worker so hols restricted! :(

add to that DCC has now moved its dates further from xmas which makes it even harder for me (can take 3-4 weeks over xmas period).

Grrrrr, bright side is you got plenty of time to prepare to hustle me! :p

Hahahaha...Dick you got me but I was serious when said it the Atllanta airport is refered to as the hub of the world. Many of the business that locate here do so cause when they ship out there product it is fairly central to the West and the North... As far as Maine and Lord on knows how far west... Now it may not be coming in ... I will attend as long as it is reasonable ... I doubt I would go to Calfornia but you never know I spent alot of years out there and maybe I could kill two birds with one stone ... I agree with Just Piddlin though the most important thing is finding someone to host it .... without that it don't matter where it is held there would be no purpose in it ...

TheTwelfthofaDozen,
If Indy had not lost it's ONLY decent poolhall, I would have been first in line to organize a tournament. As it is, I'll offer to help Zim if anyone wants a St. Louis venue.

DCC this year is definitely a great unknown quantity; but I can assure everyone that Greg and Mark are doing everything in their power to make it even better than the previous version. I for one hope they succeed.

Somehow I believe that you are not really too nervous over being "hustled" by me (in the same way Tiger Woods is not worried about being hustled by the third man on the junior high school golf team). I WILL practice however, in hopes that you will suffer some sort of major orthopedic injury that requires you to shoot opposite handed (or perhaps opposite footed if both arms are severed.....I can see you now saying, "ahhh, it's just a scratch...a minor flesh wound"). Such an injury would at least give me a small chance to win a brew.
