Az Get Together

Great plan Jay. Please no restrictions like the 50 post requirement for the Vegas AZ tourney this coming week. I only have 25 posts but I am a daily lurker just trying to keep up with everything in pool. Sincerely, Wayne Agnew

If u can read this, you qualify! :)

JH,
I guess I'll have to disagree with your assessment here. What are you, some kind of girly-man...afraid of a little competition from a poker player?????

I would be in favor of Keith playing (but he could wear a disguise or something to make you feel more secure).

He'd sweep all divisions!

Great idea! Hope it pushes through!

Just a thought here, such a gathering would
also be cool the next time you're in Manila, Jay.
The friendly get-together could be for all AZers based
in the Philippines.

:)

I'm down for this too.

I had a crazy idea yesterday. There are so many good players who post on here, why not have an annual get together, with an All Around tourney thrown in. I'm thinking $100 entry fee into each division, maybe One Pocket, 9-Ball and Banks. No added money, we just play for the entry fee money. Keep it fun but with a little purse to go after.

I thought about Colorado since it is centrally located. It doesn't have to be there though. If Jim McDermott liked it, we might be able to do it at his poolroom in Tulsa. And he can play too. He plays good by the way.

I see it as a big pool party, with some spirited competition thrown in. I'd love to meet all the good players who post here. I suspect I will recognize most of you. Ironman, Blackjack and Island Drive are already down for this. Who else?

Here is my humble thoughts on this idea. First off I think the basic concept is a great idea. It needs some tweeking but has the making of a great get together. I don't present my ideas as the way it should be run but I present them to be helpful in this endever.

First off - We obviously live in a very big country and the locatiion(s) would be paramount to being successful. Think about the large tournament venues such as the Billiards Expo., the DCC, along with the Chesaepeke tournamnt. The reason they are held where they are is due to the population density surrounding these areas and easy travel from many other states. Over 50% of our population live within 100 miles of the east coast and most of that population is north of So. Carolina.

Secondly - I think you may be missing out on many potential players by culling the "good players" for this event. I know I'm basically a ballbanger (#5 APA 8 and 9 ball). I don't consider myself a "good player". Yet. But no doubt I throughly enjoy every minute that I practice and play.

Here is my suggestion(s) :

1. Entertain having two "get togethers". One near the east coast and one near the west coast. Remember, gas is or will be $4.00 per gallon.

2. Have the east and west coast "get togethers" culminate in one final playoff near to whatever you call the center of the country.

3. Have rated play as well as open play. Neither of which would play each other. You would play in your chosen group. This make it a more level playing ground and gives everyone a fair chance at winning. This needs more refining but we are just starting to talk at this point.

4. Some sponsorship would be more readily avial. with some national companies. Not req'd. but more easily obtainable.

I'm sure their are other good ideas but this is a starter.

nice idea. could be put together in some form.

I just caught up on this thread. Glad to see so many responses. My thoughts now are this:

DCC is just the wrong place for this. Too much happening at DCC already. I know that I barely have time to visit the AZ room. I feel strongly this should be a stand alone event.

In a city that is a major airport hub makes sense. In this case, Dallas may be the best location. Chicago is second. St. Louis is a possibility as well as Minneapolis. The criteria must include a nice pool room that is willing to accommodate us. Also convenient places to stay in the area, that don't cost an arm and a leg. I'm not big on $100+ rooms, a motel for $50-60 is right up my alley.

If you live in one of these areas, please let us know if that is possible there. Let's plan one before we try to plan two. Okay?

P.S. Jimmy Wetch has a nice room in Minn.

I like this idea so much that for a minute there I thought I came up with it.

What about Atlanta? It could be at Johnny and Kim's place or Mr. Cues. Except for it being on the East Coast, it fits all the criteria and then some. If everyone is going to fly anyway then this could work great.

I would do my best to come and participate in the East coast leg if it happens.

Where are we talkin East Coast? I think ATL or L'ville would be good.

I like the idea of having it at Johnny's room. A LOT! I guess most of you guys live back East. I used to drive that far for good action, so I guess I can still fly. :)

I drove back and forth across the country six times when I was in my 20's. Haven't done it since. The last time I was 32 in 1978. Yes, I'm that old!

What are your thoughts on having it at Q-Masters during the same time as the U.S. Open?

Same as DCC. If I go to the Open, I will be busy there every day.

I kind of figured that, but I thought it was worthy of mention. Q-Masters, with the bleacher seats, is a pretty cool spot for a tournament. :)

This is exactly how I feel. If we do it at another established event, we will lose a lot of folks to the other events. I would think we would rather this be specific to our community, but we could open it to everyone, so we could get a greater turnout.

That's my thoughts. I do like the central location. I think we need to look for more events in the KS, OK and TX areas. There are great places to hold such events in those states. I know from Tulsa, it is about 24-30 hours to either coast. That's why I was thinking that central is good. By the way, gasoline in the Tulsa area was about $3.49/gal. a day or two ago.

If you look at a map, CO isn't very far off from centrally located. KS is about as central as one can get, and CO borders it to the West. Tulsa was also mentioned, and that borders KS directly South.

I'll probably go if it's in either of those places, time permitting. Jay ... throw 14.1 in there! ;)
