AzB's Dumbing Down

Used to be you could find good how-to discussion here on AzB - back then I recommended the forum to pool players looking for learning resources. Nowadays I send them to other websites - all you get here on AzB now is Ringmaster CJ Wiley and his performing seals barking about his for-sale "systems" - plus a few (and dwindling) faint objections that are quickly drowned out by the organ grinder music.

Quality posters with actual knowledge, once numerous here, are few and far between now - they've apparently gotten tired of swimming against the rising tide of bullshit and just faded away. Who can blame them?

I don't know what can be done about it - I don't know if AzB's owners/mods want to do anything about it. Maybe they'll wake up and quarantine this marketing infection like they did with the aiming system outbreak. Maybe it'll be soon enough to matter. Maybe somebody who cares will still be here to see it.

More dumb people have access to the internet now than back in the day.

Also, there's been an increase in what I call "burner identities" sort of like burner phones. These surface anytime a regular wants to bash someone else. They are always: anonymous, have a low post count, know extensive forum history, and will flagrantly badmouth particular posters until the mods notice and they get the boot.

As to CJ, he's turned this place into CJ Billiards v AZ Billiards, plastering his memes, scrapbook clippings, and repeating his posts over and over and over. Once is never enough with CJ. He needs his own sub-forum, ala the Aiming Conversation, so he and his admirers can wallow in everything CJ.

If you ever actually bothered to read the great collection of info on Dr Dave's site you might be surprised how much of it was written by Patrick.

I think you mean written by Jack Koehler and copied by Patrick. PJ certainly didn't come up with the terminology of physics in billiards on his own.

http://www.amazon.com/Science-Pocket-Billiards-Jack-Koehler/dp/0962289027

You can also purchase this book but it might be a little too pricey for cheap broke pool players who cry and squawk about the price of a Dvd being "huckstered" by a pro player or pro instructor.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/09...=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=0964537001

Study these books and use them as your constant companion on AZ and you too can be a PJ pain in the a$$.

I've already received more green rep for my first post in this thread than for any other post I've ever made - mostly from the "silent majority". Seems there's some agreement...

Well, I was going to give you some greenies until I saw the inappropriate placement of the double quotes before the period in "silent majority."

I agree with what you have written in this thread 100 percent. Some members seem to take great pleasure in targeting others rather than engaging in a colloquy about pool. They come to this forum for the sole purpose to cause hurt and/or anger. As well, I believe there are a few mentally unstable members who may be dangerous to another member's well-being.

AzBilliards hasn't gone the way of RSB, but it's on a downward spiral, which is okay. Change is good. I never thought I'd realize there *is* life after AzBilliards. Keith and I both used to enjoy this forum, but because of a few bad apples, we mostly read this forum today. It's not worth it to contribute anything to a cess pool of haters, trolls, banned members posting, and the mentally unstable.

Hi Jennie, The ONLY reason I logged in was to agree with your sentiments 100%...

Azb is "dumbing down", on "a downward spiral". No more quality posters, all haters, trolls, ignorant fools, marketing huxters.....While I agree that these elements do exist, I don't really subscribe to the theory that they are the majority. I wouldn't come here otherwise. I guess many of these viewpoints are related to the aging process, at least that is what it sounds like to me and the average poster on this forum is definetly long in the tooth. "The kids today are all ignorant and spoiled, back in my day..." For all of you who think this is universally true, remember what your parents thought of your generation...Apparently this dumbing down and spoiling process goes back all the way to the ancient greeks.

I may not have been around as long as some others, but I remember that back in the day when I joined and before that, when I lurked, there were PLENTY of vicious trolls and idiots, some of whom make todays equivalents look innocent in comparison. If anything I'd say the forum has calmed down quite a bit. Remember the aiming wars, anyone? I have done my share of complaining, I won't deny it, even recently as well. I take full responsibility for that, but I try to make up for it as best I can. And i can still find discussions I find interesting, not just to "correct" the "misapprehensions" of others, but to learn things to put into my game. Is it sad that some can't find interesting content? Yes, of course, but maybe the fault is not with the forum...

Is comlaining about the forums state of affairs helping the discourse of pool? NO, not in any way! In fact, it is merely contributing to negativity! You feel the forum sucks now? Why come here at all? You want to change it somehow? Post a thread! Complaining doesn't get anything done. Once people has read your complaint and agreed or disagreed, they forget it 30 seconds later.

When your posts drip of contempt for your fellow posters, what recourse do they have? The sheer amount of smug, self-satisfatied, holier-than-thou attitudes some posters exhibit is extremely provoking. When people pour their contempt on you in the way that the op did, making fun of him or her is a natural response, are the people who respond therefore haters, trolls etc..? I will remind you that the op was banned for 2 flipping years! That's somewhat of an accomplishment in itself,..How quickly some forget!

And yes I am aware of the irony of complaining about people complaining in a thread made for complaining! Life is funny sometimes!

I agree, good post.

can't remember
who said it first

Well said, Lou.

You forgot to add a picture of a martial artist and some artsy quotes, though. :D
Maybe throw in a short paragraph, or five, about a bar you won some money at.

- The Teacher is the Game

The problem with forums is that people tend to state their opinions as facts, and some even pretend to be experts when they're clearly not.

For example: Take this poster's tag line that shows up at the end of every post:

"The only reason for being unwilling to put the full tournament prize fund in escrow in advance is if you know you might not pay it all out. Naturally the escrow would have to include the guaranteed added money as well, otherwise there is nothing "guaranteed" about it.

You only need the option to not pay out what you promised if you might actually use it. In other words the promoter is insisting on retaining the power to screw any or all of the players out of prize money as they see fit. "

The statement shows short-sightedness and a lack of understanding regarding large prize funds. True, it's one of the reasons why a small time operator scrounging for added money up until the last minute may not want to put money into escrow, but it's certainly far from the only reason. In fact, most major international billiard events and most events in other sports receive the bulk of their sponsorship money after the event takes place. While it's not the most convenient of situations, it is the way it's often done. The players get paid within days or week after the event ends ---- And THAT is a fact.

I took about a year off from this place. I use to love it here, but between one particularly offensive poster, and the growing amount of regular/minor BS, I just called it quits for a while.

I still am not nearly as active as what I once was. To be honest, I don't intend to be. FB is alot better place for me. Not so much anonymity. It's amazing how much less BS is involved when people have to stand behind their statements.

Great post PJ. If you're outraged by PJ's post, there's a solid chance you're part of the problem...

Ironically, many clever and quite a few intelligent posts. Too bad they weren't channeled towards some constructive pursuit like supplying useful information rather than attacking others. Maybe everyone on this thread should make a special effort to contribute something meaningful each day and to avoid attacking anyone else for 30 days. Perhaps it will be infectious.

Meh, he's correct in terms of British style (which, of course, is the correct style), so I'll +rep him instead ;).

There's nothing wrong with PJ's post that a few alterations can't fix.

That's a much better post, PJ.

You're welcome

There are a lot of people on here who have game that don't feel like getting into drawn out multi-page arguments with the usual suspects here who are relentless and won't give up. It just becomes easier to spend your time other ways. Why share something when you are going to get drawn into a situation with a bunch of pinheads trying to prove they are the smartest one in the room. **** that! I'm sure I am not the only one who feels that way. This isn't a new thing, been that way a long time here and on other forums.

EXACTLY, that is the reason that I have rarely ever posted on here. Like to read the forums, do not like to contribute to a slew of different arguments though.

lol - Hi, Jennie, nice to see ya around again...

Actually, I put the punctuation outside the quotes on purpose - it's my little rebellion against Strunk & White. I follow a rule that makes more sense to me: put punctuation inside the quotes only if what's inside the quotes should itself be punctuated (say, if it's a complete sentence) - otherwise the punctuation "belongs to" the entire sentence, not the quoted part.

pj <- free the punctuation!
