On the winners side
Basavich defeated Gabe Owen 11-10.
Deuel defeated Reyes 11-10
The winners play tomorrow

When I left Efren was going to play Rodney Morris and
Mika Immonen was to play Owen.

In the Efren/Corey match it was nip and tuck the whole way
with each making an error or two. Corey was soft breaking and
doing it very well. With it hill hill Corey ran out a nice rack.

The Basavich match was a little different style with both players
making great outs but also getting out of line alot. In a couple
games they had safety battles that went on for 5-6 shots.
I thought each player got a roll or two and that part evened out.
In the end Kid Delicious, IMO, played a little better.
I am not sure though that Danny's slow play did not take its toll
on Gabe. Danny was faster than other times I have seen him but at times
really took it slow. Gabe is not a fast player either.
With it hill to hill Danny hooked himself like this

He tried to kick it into corner A and left this
START(

)END

Gabe tried to make the ball in the corner when I thought he should have played safe. He missed the ball leaving this
Danny made the six and was pretty much perfect on the 7.
Gabe then gave him the remaining balls. That really surprised me.

Right next to them Mika was playing Santos and Santos. Santos was straight on the eight only about 18 inches away and tried to draw up
table for the 9. He miscued and left Mika the out. Mika then won the
match.
With Gabe seeing this I was surprised he gave him the balls.

Also during the DB/GO match Danny cut in this 7 ball
START(
%Gd0G4%HD2D3%Ii8J4%Pa8V9%Qs6B3

)END
He looked at it alot and then fired it into corner A. He then screamed
out " YEAH". He was pretty intense the whole match. He went nuts at the
end screaming to the crowd and celebrating the win.

I will say that I saw a few things of note
1-Every player there held the cue very lightly. Most players including myself
need to work on this.
2-Mika has better speed and cue ball control than most anyone. He wins alot of games with great speed control on saftey shots
3- Danny B kicks as good as I have ever seen anyone kick. He kicked them in, he kicked them safe and he kicked just to hit some but he always hit them.
It reminded me to "take dead aim"
4-Corey is really smooth
5- All the guys left themselves what most of us might think was a little hard.
They however made them look easy and rarely had to hit the balls as hard
as others do.
6- Rodney Morris looks as effortless playing as anyone. I have always liked watching him play and tonight was no exception. He and Frankie Hernandez
had a great offensive match. The Rocket got him with FH making two unforced errors.
7- the payouts are pathetic. No one can afford to travel to these events.
Its time for someone to get serious and come up with a better system, tour or
market strategy.

It was a good time and I was glad my friends drug me down there to watch.
The Valet lost my buddies keys and then his vehicle. That got comical
for a second or two. The Bicycle Club needs some help with that service.
Two other people had to go identify their keys for the valet. My buddy had to walk the valet lot to find his suburban and it was not there. It ended up being in a different parking lot not where the valets usually park them.

Sorry so long

Efren beat Morris 11-8 and Gabe Owen beat Mika ( I believe it was 11-9 ).
Mika was playing really well in this tournament. I thought he was going to make it thru the final four.
Hats off to Gabe Owen who lost a real tough match to Basavitch earlier. He came in firing against Mika. Gabe has a beautiful stroke. Reminds me of a young Johnny Archer.
Corey Deuel will be hard to beat. He has the soft brake going.

Does this mean Efren and Owen in the B side and Deuel and Danny in the winners? Are they the last four?

Thanks for the GREAT updates! This is what's cool about this forum.

I am surprised to hear Gabe conceded the last few balls to Danny Basavich, considering the recent scuttlebutt about the UPA enforcement of the concession rule.

About Corey's soft break, he is the master. The only catch is 2 or 3 balls (I can't remember which) MUST pass the side pocket after the break for it to be legal. And if I was competing against Corey, I'd be looking for that to happen after every single soft break.

Danny steamrolled right over Corey at the Glass City Open several months ago, running a 6-pack and executing perfect safety plays. In fairness to Corey, he didn't get to the table due to Danny's dominating play. This match will be an interesting one. I'm sure Corey's got Danny lined up in his sights and may have a few tricks up his sleeve, and Corey definitely likes playing in front of the TV cameras.

Since the semi and final matches will be recorded, I am thinking there will be a 30-second time provision enforced.

I wonder, is this a true double elimination tournament where the player coming from the losers' side has to beat the hotseat player twice, or is the last match an extended race?

It looks to me, reading between the lines, that there are four players left in the tournament. Danny Basavich and Corey Deuel are going to play for the hotseat, and the winner of the Efren Reyes and Gabe Owen match will play the loser of Basavich vs. Deuel match.

Many feel the break is 50 percent of the game in 9-ball. I have seen Corey Deuel break soft and hard, depending on the equipment. If three balls do not pass the side pocket after the break, it is most definitely a foul, and the opponent gets ball in hand.

I'm still betting my V-chips on Kid Delicious. Just like reading the Racing Forum, I like the Kid's RECENT track record stats when comparing it to the other horses in the race! Efren and Mika are the seasoned Arabian stallions and definitely outshine the other players with their long history of accomplishments. Corey Deuel is a consistent player and is going to be giving it his all.

JAM's pick: Kid Delicious all the way to the finish line! :p

Frank, thanks for a fantastic post. The depth of your coverage is greatly appreciated.

Joey, thanks for adding to Frank's amazing post.

Finally, go Kid Delicious! You gotta love the guy!

Thanks Frank! About the valets. As you know So CAl has been inundated with rain for the past week so I feel sorry for those Valet guys! But even so its only for a $1.50 while at the Hollywood Park Casino they are charging $8.00 to park your car!

I am not going to the finals as I think a race to 7 is a joke. Particularly for these champions. Since the tv matches are edited anyway why cant they play 11 and edit down that? Also dont like the alternate break. Last year at this same venue you got to see Pagulayan run 6 on Efren and Efren come back in a rematch and run 7 on Alex. Maybe its more fair but there is more drama when winner breaks. Running racks is one of the few things that 9 ball has that puts spectators out of their seats.

Hot seat match just posted. Cory 7, Danny 5. Too bad they go race to 7 after playing to 11 all week.

Thanks for the prompt results update, Nfty9er! :)

So it's a race to 7 because of television. What about when it gets to the last two? Will it be true double-elimination format, or will it be one race for the first-place win?

My horse ain't out of this race yet! I'm still going with Danny all the way!

Go, Danny. Go! :D
