Bad Action in NYC

I go to Broadway Billiards too play some one pocket. This guy "Tim" is practicing on the first table to the right. I've played him once before and I think he's a little better than me, but its action.

The table drifts bad towards his break pocket. I lose the first game. Now I get the drift pocket. Only I dont understand the amount of drift, miss several shots and lose. I have no prayer of winning.

I tell Tim I cant play on this table. I'll play him on the first table to the left. He gives me a hard time about changing tables but aggrees.

I win the next two games. He's pissed and quits unless I move back to the crooked table. Nope.

Now I remember the first time I played Tim. It was on the good table to the left. He quit after doubling the bet and losing the first game.

Seems most players want to rob other players instead of an even game.

Laugh in his face, call him a nit, and walk out.

Got to tell you it sucks out there.

You are great action all the time and a very good customer.

I'm glad and fortunate to have you as a customer.

Quite a few desperados in that place.

The only thing I can think of is a keno board. U roll the balls onto the board and they nestle into shallow holes or they roll back down the ramp. Hope that helps.

I haven't seen one in years, but all the fire houses and private clubs use to have poker boards on Long Island, NY. Each hole had a different card painted on it. Johnnyt

I mean, I don't consider New York to be a big action town but don't you think this is a little harsh? Tim from Broadway Billiards represents "Bad Action in NYC?" You found the cheapest poolroom around. The place has a funny smell. The bathrooms are gross. The tables are REALLY old. The balls are filthy. The chairs are falling apart. (you can let me know when to stop) The carpet is, well, something that separates your feet from whatever lies beneath and God help the person who finds out what that might be.

Who did you expect to see when you walked into this swanky establishment? What sort of gambler were you hoping for?

They have a bathroom now at Broadway? Did they remodel or something?
They don't make enough hand sanitizer for me to go in there.

Players that come to NYC can get played. Depending on the game and the room you can get nits or you can get a good game. If it's about the game and not the money then Broadway is the wrong place to go. Amsterdam or Masters would've been better especially if you're up front about what you want.

Yep, Broadway is a dump. Doesnt it remind you of the movie The Hustler...

The last two times I was in NY I went to Amsterdam. One night was league night, but I did get to talk to Steve(Mr. 200). We go way back. The other day not much was happening.

At 5 or 6 bucks an hour I'll give Broadway some action. The first table on the left is as good as any table you'll find anywhere. I was just lucky to play Tim:groucho:

This sounds eerily like some of the stories in Freddy's book!! NO OFFENSE to Freddy just reminds me of some of his great memories!!!

Well, I do have sympathy for the out-of-town pool player and Amsterdam Billiards. The two simply don't mix. Amsterdam is as busy as Grand Central Terminal and the only way to get a table is to have thorough knowledge of the leagues' schedules. Seriously, this is not an easy task. Surprisingly, your best bet is Friday and Saturday. Both nights have no leagues so it's first-come-first-serve the whole day through.

Masters Billiards and Skyline are probably the better known rooms for gambling. It's really a toss-up between which one to visit. Personally, I think Masters is a bit more comfortable and if you're starting in Manhattan, Masters is closer to the city.

However, Skyline is right off the F train which travels right through Park Slope, Carroll Gardens and Cobblehill (all excellent neighborhoods to visit for their array of restaurants). Even though they may not have the food service Masters has, your food options en route to Skyline are (IMO) significantly better. Skyline is also owned by a poolplayer (who happens to post here occasionally) so you know their equipment is kept in top shape.

Thanks for the info.

I did a yellowpages search and cant find Skyline Billiards

I think others summed up Pool in NYC fairly well.

I just wanted to add that Park Slope Billiards is also owned by a poolplayer and is a decent place to play.

I think a lot of visitors limit their NYC visit to Manhattan only, forgetting that NYC is a fairly large city (dont forget Brooklyn, Queens, etc).

Masters has plenty of action players and it is an easy commute from Manhattan. You can take the 7 train from Grand Central, it'll stop a few blocks away from Masters, on Queens Blvd. Real easy to get to.

To the original poster; as you noticed, NYC isn't a big action town. Most players are locksmiths. For that matter, some would call them nits. This doesn't apply to everyone, but most fall into this category. Sorry, it is what it is.
