"Pool players are notorious for finding the angle and beating the system. Such was the case when "deals" between players were made regarding the bank-the-eightball bonus. IPT founder Kevin Trudeau says "I am a little disappointed but not surprised about the short-term thinking and hustling tactics of many of these players. Their ethics, honesty, and character need a little work. I am not judging because I myself had ethics problems before I turned my life around. I have faith these players will over time raise their ethics levels."
I was wondering if this would be the case and I wonder how they dealt with it. More importantly however I am wondering what caused Kevin to put up a challenge that would open the door for players to act unprofessionally. There was no real need to have a proposition like this, only a real fool would throw away the chance at hundreds of thousands of dollars on banking the 8. The smart ones just have a saver built in when they know the game is lost. What I mean is that it's a little mean to hold the candy out there when this thing is supposed to be ultra-professional.
Kevin probably thought it would be a good idea for another spur-of-the moment bonus. I prefer bonuses for performance that doesn't tempt players to act unethically. The rack running bonus is a great one because there is no way that two players can collude to "fix" that. You just have to do it. I don't think that there is a real need for a lot more gimmicky propositions here. Just play.
Here's a thought Kevin. I am sure you have had it as well. Internet Pay-Per-View. I would love to watch these matches on the internet. I would happily pay a small amount to be able to log in and view a match in progress. Say $10 for the duration of the tournament for a single camera, no commentary feed. That's a gimmick worth doing.
