WOW! Barry is the MAN OF THE YEAR. At least from my perspective....

Barry has stepped up to the plate once more. This time he is paying the WPA (World Pool Association) sanctioning fee out of his pocket instead of pulling it back out of the player's pocket.

This isn't a few hundred dollars. This WPA sanctioning fee FOR THIS TOURNAMENT is $3500.00. IN addition, Barry is paying for the entry fees for the past champs for a total outlay of $12,000.00.

Barry, you love pool, the pool players and we all love you. YOU DA MAN!

LONG LIVE THE U.S. OPEN 9 BALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Thanks,
JoeyA

Actually, the sanction fee is $3500. He is also paying the entry fees for all the past champs so his total outlay is a bit more than $12,000. Good on him!

WPA Fee

How does paying the WPA sanction fee do anything for Barry? Just curious?

Why does he have to pay a wpa fee in the first place? what does the fee do for him, the US Open and for the players? Just curious.

I think, and I could be wrong, but he would be short a few big name players if it wasn't "sanctioned" by the WPA. Not sure of the particulars but there had to be some consequence or like previously mentioned... why would he pay it?

Players who come from countries like Sweden, China, etc who have Olympic Committees that support the pro side of the game get their expenses paid to come if the event is sanctioned. Plus, players who are collecting bonus money for their points standings are encouraged to participate.

Good Post JoeyA. Actually before I saw this post has talked to Barry. I had been seeing him around and said hi and small talk etc. This time I stopped him and told him thank you for another great US Open. He seemed really happy to hear it, maybe anyone who reads this and are here at the Open should just make sure that he knows how much it is appreciated and thank him.
I am already tired from being up so late and getting up early but I am not only working here but having a blast while doing it and trying to take in as much as possible. right now I feel like the luckiest man in the world. I am getting paid for this, :)

Barry is good in my book, he does things his way as he should and the players get paid. Its not the bait and switch or false promises that we have seen over and over again,

I'm here at the Open-almost, I shared a cab with Mark Griffen last nite we met up in Chicago on the flight, that was kinda cool, Sonny and Mark went over to the tournment, Kelly and I came to the room-I had some work to do :(. Its 4:15 and I still havent been there. I'm going soon.

Barry has had a event year after year, no BS, no excuses. Good economy-bad economy. He delivers. That is a achivement to be that consistant itself. Nothing has ever stopped him, he isnt a one hit wonder. Sure he makes $$$ and he should he works hard at it. I have heard a few rumors and facts that arent 100% positive but at the end of the day Barry is batting 1.000.

Thanks for starting this thread JoeyA, With your permission Joey can I tell him how good you are at commentary??? He might already know but I sure would like to see you involved with the US Open as a commentator sometime. And I bet I'm not the only one here thinking that. I asked Jay a couple years ago about being a commentator and he said "Its easy just talk about the game". I have tried and tried and I'm a C- comentator when I'm in the booth with lead commentator. Its hard for me. Your first time commentating you were a A- comentator and can work alone or with someone in the booth. Your gifted beyond belief, you should do a demo tape for "Voice over" jobs and make alot of $$$ on the side. If you like I can find you a agent in Los Angeles.

Make sense. I hope those players who actually benefit from Barry paying their fees for them really appreciate him...

I like Barry and his little pooch that seems to go almost everywhere with him. I would love to do commentary at the U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship. It is one of the GREATEST POOL EVENTS OF ALL TIME. This event has stood the test of time. Someone should clone Barry or figure out how he does it for posterity. There will only be one Barry Behrman. You can see why he is successful with the U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship. He LOVES what he is doing. It's in his eyes, in his words and in his deeds.

Feel free to pass on your kind and generous thoughts to Barry.

I'm not sure if the voice over business holds the magic for me that doing pool commentary does. If I ever decide to lean that direction, I'll be sure to get in touch concerning the LA Agent. My voice over agent would have to negotiate "business trips" that coincide with some of the popular west coast pool tournaments.

Thanks for the thoughts and compliments.

If SmorgassBored were here he would definitely take this moment to stick a needle in my ego, throw you a probing question and bring a smile to my face. He would probably insist on being taken along on any "business trips" taking exception to any other "agents" of mine besides himself.

FTR, I am fairly sure Barry does NOT hire anyone to do pool commentary at the U.S. Open 9 Ball Championship.

Ooops. He just got in the chat and called Danny D and Jim Wych the "Dynamic Duo " and said " these two will be here til the end "...

Well, maybe you can join the two of them

I'm not being a "party pooper" either. Just wishing you well.

Barry does a great job, I agree!!!

Barry

Prize fund is $200,000. 216 players @ 600 entry is 129,600. The other 70,400 didn't come from thin air.
Barry puts alot more in to this thing than just money, He really cares about the players and people.
I know some people on here haven't like what this man has said and done in the past but. He is a man and none of us are perfect. For pool anyway this guy is the real deal. POOL needs more promoters like Barry!

Actually JoeyA has ruined commentating for me! He was so good at Galveston I have been disappointed with the commentary on every match so far at the US Open. I really liked Joey's and J.J. together, that was the best.

Danny D just doesn't do anything for me, he argues with his co-hosts about the right shot and he is rarely ever right about what the player is going to do. I think they need to get some new blood in the booth!

My vote is definitely for Joey!!!

Kudo's to Barry!

And... I wish JoeyA was doing some of the commentary. There is one guy doing commentary that is, imo, a real dud. No enthusiasm at all. I didn't get his name... Bill something maybe. Anyway... sorry to divert attention here.

Barry deserves to be in the HOF. Seriously. Thirty four years of this tournament is no small thing. It's huge and in my mind it is THE MAJOR tournament of the year.
