This year the BCA nominated three players in the player category and none in the meritorious category for induction into the BCA Hall of Fame. Consequently, there will be only one person who enters the Hall of Fame this year. If you could vote in this years election for induction into the BCA Hall of Fame, which would you vote for?

Earl!!!!!!!!!!!!! Earl Earl Earl Earl Earl!!!

He should have been in the friggin hall of fame last year, not robin dodson! Dodson is/was a good player, but Earl Strickland far far far far surpasses her. what happened last year was an outrage. I have seen Earl play pool as well as it can be played. He is the last player to win back to back world titles. This is the BCA's chance to right a major wrong.

Tap! Tap! Tap!

If this was based on "pool Playing" alone, Earl would and should be a mortal lock. His MAJOR Championship wins top everyone else(that's not already in the HOF) by miles.Unfortunatley the BCA is a based on politics and their apparent resentment for Earl runs deep.

Earl may never get into the H.O.F.

I'm not familiar with Daly, however, I do agree that Alan Hopkins is a worthy HOF candidiate. My money is on A.H getting in.Afterall he's a nice guy and Earl isn't.

hmmmmm!!!! Maybe the BCA should change the award to the "nice Guy"(or nice Gal, Robin D.) award instead of the
" Player catergory" award.

Maurice Daly – Born in New York in 1849, Maurice Daly worked in billiard rooms as a youth and became the U.S. champion at American 4-Ball Billiards in 1873, world champion at Straight-Rail in 1875 and world champion at Cushion Caroms in 1883. He staged numerous tournaments at his two New York billiard rooms. In 1895, he led a successful protest against an oppressive billiard room regulation and was elected president of the Billiard Room Owners' Association. Mr. Daly was the billiard columnist for the New York Herald, which printed his shot diagrams that became the basis for Daly's Billiard Book, a best seller that was published in 1913 and is still in print today. He was a tournament promoter, referee and the instructor of many billiard champions, including Willie Hoppe and Welker Cochran. Mr. Daly died in New York in 1932 at age 83, having devoted his entire life to playing, teaching and promoting billiards.

Dodson's track record during the nine ball era probably makes her sixth or seventh best among the women of the last 30 years. Her election is no outrage. As a nineballer, her track record is quite similar to Hall of Famers Loree Jon Jones and Ewa Laurance.

The case for Strickland is obvious, but there is no need to single out Dodson here as possibly undeserving. She had a hall of fame career in every respect.

The official voting deadline is today. The results of the official ballot should be released very soon.

TX you mentioned no meritorious catagory?
Daly seems like he should be a shoo in for that given the short bio you provided.
Hopkins qualifies in my opinion both meritoriously and as a player.
Earls playing accomplishments are obvious.

Did the BCA indicate why no meritorious catagory?

I'm sad to see Maurice Daly get so little recognition here.

I recently went to a friend's house (friend with billiards table), and was offered Maurice Daly's book on billiards (new paperback version) to help learn the game. I declined (since I have a 1919 hardback copy in my library), but I concurred that it is an exceptional, time-tested work. Surely all serious billiards players must recognize Daly's influence, and that in itself seems plenty of grounds for inclusion.

I think Allen Hopkins is a very worthy candidate given his promotion of the game on and off the table. Earl's playing prowess and popular antics are well known to us now; but I can't imagine that in a hundred years anyone will remember Earl's name (unless he assassinates a president or marries Jessica Simpson - and just so Earl doesn't think this too harsh, the same goes for all of us).

You can add to the game, or subtract from the game - I prefer those who add.

Will they snub Earl again?

Earl's behavioral problems aside, the guy's credentials are far above that of some previous selections for the HOF. 2 World Championships and 5 U.S. Open Championships? C'mon. His induction is long overdue.

Yeah right, and they ought to make OJ the pope! If you owned a hot dog stand, would you want Earl to be your representive? He might be able to play but is a poor representative for pool.

I didn't mean to single her out, its just that she got the spot last year over Earl, and in my opinion Earl was far more deserving JMHO.

No meritorius? The BCA missed the boat. They should have listed Hopkins there. Then both Hopkins and Strickland would have gotten in. Everyone would have thought the BCA was great and did the right thing.

I suspect that Daly is not commonly known to the voters but may still get a lot of votes. People will vote for Earl. And people will vote against Earl. The HOF appears to be a popularity contest.

When my bud had a vote he voted for Ewa. I asked him what she did? He said, "who cares, she's gorgeous."

Next year I expect to see Kevin Trudeau's name in there for meritorius. LOL.

I am torn between Allen Hopkins and Earl Strickland and believe BOTH should have been admitted into the BCA's hall of fame a long time ago, ESPECIALLY Allen Hopkins. Both are American pool legends and will definitely go down in the history books of pool, with or without the BCA, IMHO.

I must admit, I had never heard of Maurice Daly, and I appreciate the write-up provided by TX Poolnut. I wonder how many other notable pool icons have been forgotten due to time passing by.

That is correct according to their website (no nominations for meritorious service this year). There wasn't any indication as to why.

Do you have a link to the BCA website with the info for this year's candidates?

I went to http://www.bca-pool.com and I am unable to locate any info pertaining to the upcoming nominees. Thanks in advance! :)

To me, the most glaring omission in the meritorious service category is Pat Fleming, founder of Accustats.

Agreed. At a recent Joss event, I ran into a lady pro who used to play in the Jean Balukas era. Her name is Joanne Corbett. She was delightful to talk to, and we had a long chat.:)

The friend who accompanied her to the tournament knew that I was interested in old pool periodicals, and she was nice enough to bring some of her collection with her to show me.

One of the items that stuck out above the rest was something I had not seen before, and I think--and I may be wrong--that it was the very FIRST Pat Fleming Accu-Stat record sheets. There was a pamphlet describing the match between Joanne and Jean Balukas, a shot-by-shot record. Pat wrote down a summary of each game, to include a complete description of each shot in detail. No pictures, but it was fascinating.

I am still trying to locate the Hall of Fame nominee info for this year on the BCA website, but to no avail. It is curious that the BCA omitted the Meritorious Service category for this year. Pat Fleming would fit in there snug as a bug, IMHO!

Thanks, Todd. That's quite a read. The descriptions of Allen and Earl both seemed so dry. That's not the Allen and Earl we all know and love, but then I guess that's BCA-speak. :p

Their career wins are quite phenomenal, and then there's Maurice Daly. For gosh sakes, what took them so long to get him up for consideration?

Oh, well, I sure wouldn't want to have to vote on this one.:o
