All congrats to Thorsten on getting into the BCA HOF, but it left me wondering when Dennis Orcollo will be similarly recognized. All Dennis has done year after year for the last fifteen years is win all kinds of tournaments; 9-Ball, Ten Ball, Straight Pool, One Pocket and even Bank Pool! He has consistently competed against the best players on the planet and defeated all of them at one time or another, both in tournaments and head to head competition. His winning record the last fifteen years is pretty much unmatched. except for possibly Shane who undoubtedly will be in the HOF soon. At age 42 Dennis continues to dominate tournaments wherever he goes. He has never had an "off year" and always is at the top of the leader board at the end of every year. I'm not sure what more he has to do to be worthy of this recognition. Throughout his long career, Dennis is and has always been considered one of the top five players in the world. His record in competition speaks for itself. Take a look at his results this year and go back and look at previous years. I defy you to find a more consistent winner at pool than Dennis Orcollo. Shane is the only one who is even close in that respect.

Dennis won't have to wait very long, for he has been a giant of our game for years.

A few who aren't in yet are deserving, and I just hope I'm around to see them all inducted. Attending the Hall of Fame dinner is one of the great thrills I get to experience each year. Last year was eerie, with Kelly Fisher voted in but not inducted, but I'm delighted that her moment in the sun will come at this year's ceremony in late October.

I hope we'll both be lucky enough to one day attend the BCA HOF dinner in which Dennis is inducted. That's a moment to live for, Jay, and it shouldn't be long coming.

Dennis is someone who is CERTAIN to eventually get in. Although, my recollection is that it is true that some deserving players don't get voted in until after they die. And that is a real shame. I hope I'm not mixing this fact up with a different hall of fame, but regardless, I think that truly great players should be voted in as early in their lives as possible.

Yes, Dennis deserves induction as soon as possible. And he only seems to be getting BETTER!

His turn will come, the same as SVB. Shane should go in first in my opinion so I’ll say…. The year after Shane. 😉

I’m not sure a HOF in any thing these days carries the weight it once did pre-internet.

The purpose of a HOF in any sport is acknowledgment of success and respect ones peers within their respective sport and or area of excellence. It afforded the members of the HOF a way to stand out and above the norm.

Then came the internet which has redefined damn near everything. What used to take weeks or months to get the results of is now rack by rack. Shot by shot. Everyone can find out what ever they want when ever they want about whoever whenever. Kinda dilutes the HOF concept.

This isn’t about Denis or pool, just the HOF concept in general. I think it’s kinda out dated. And I really don’t like that, but that’s how I see it now. Recognition is given in real time not once a year.

This is a good point. It kind of goes along with what I said that they should put someone in the HOF earlier in the players life, when they are still alive, and to your point, maybe they need to be put them in when they are still near the top of their games to maintain relevance.

Nowadays people like immediate feedback.

Exactly right “immediate feedback” and it’s forgotten as fast as it was provided. Which leads me to my point that I don’t like that HOF’s are seeming less relevant as they once were.

Time marches on……

I wonder if one of the issues is that although Dennis has been consistent, he’s never had a massive year like Darren, Mike or Shane have. By that I mean one of those years where it seems like he won every major title out there.

Jay,

If you look at Bob Jewett’s post on this topic, it looks like some voters didn’t realize they could vote for multiple players. That’s the only explanation that makes sense to me for either Dennis or Niels not getting in this year.

If memory serves, an active player is first eligible for induction in the year in which they turn 41. That means Shane won't be eligible until 2024. The argument that Dennis should have to wait until Shane gets in doesn't make sense to me.

But Halls of Fame are not just for the current generation to honor the best of the current era. The Halls put a select few players of a sport in a place of honor in perpetuity. Future generations may learn about some such honorees only from such recognition. Nothing outdated about that.

Well said. I'll add that the Hall of Fame induction ceremony itself is a link to pool's past, as numerous superstars of yesteryear attend. I recall that at Darren Appleton's induction in 2017, all of the following were present: Eddie Kelly, Jean Balukas, Allen Hopkins, Ewa Mataya Laurance, Jim Rempe, Jeanette Lee and numerous other hall of famers that one rarely has an opportunity to meet and/or converse with. The passing of the torch from one generation to the next is part of pool's tradition, and the BCA HOF dinner is an event in which pool's greatest connect not just with their peers but with those that paved the way for them.

I'm sure that when Dennis Orcullo gets in, he'll feel better about it when some of the superstars of yesteryear shake his hand and say "well done." The BCA Hall of Fame connects the generations of pool and reminds us that we should think about guys like Mosconi, Greenleaf, Irving Crane, Harold Worst, and Walter Tevis, all of whom are important figures in our game's history.

The BCA Hall of Fame is no less important today than in the past.
