BCA Open - Jasmin Ouschan's Effort on Thursday

Not since the days of the young Balukas and the young Loree Jon jones has a young lady made the kind of statement that Jasmin Ouschan made Thursday at the BCA open.

Her day began against Corr. The defining moment came at 4-4. The one sat below the nine which sat below the six along the same long rail. Ouschan had narrowly failed to snooker Karen from the one, but Karen, by her own account in our chat after the match, erred in not kicking at the one. By thinning it, Karen opened up a dead 6-9 combo oon the nine, and the result was a cheap win for Ouschan in one of those tied-up racks that it seems Karen never loses. After the gift win for the 5-4 lead, Ouschan was brillaint and never gave the lead away.

Against Kelly Fisher, the key moment came with Jasmin 5-3 ahead. A poor miss on a two ball, couple with a lucky roll, left Kelly with an extremely difficult jump, but in what may have been the best shot of the tournmanet, Fisher jumped and cut the two thin into the bottom corner. Sadly, though, the cue ball caromed into a very unfortunate scratch. With a 6-3 lead, Jasmin coasted the rest of the way.

The match with Treadway was no match at all, and to be honest, Treadway looked quite nervous. Still, Pam made a statement this week that she's a young player to be watched, and her play wa shighly commendable.

The demolition of Hofstatter and Shin Mei Liu was, quite simply, breathtaking. With scintillating play, Ouschan never broke a sweat in those two matches, and enters the TV round in her finest form.

The 20 year old phenom has already beaten #4 Ga Yound Kim, #3 Kelly Fisher, #2 Karen Corr, and two time world champion Shin Mei Liu. Of course, the title goes through #1 allison Fisher, but if Jasmin pulls this thing off, she will have offered one of the truly memorable performances in the history of women's pro pool.

I can't wait for the semifinal tonight with Thornfeldt (who had a chance to beat Allison, but failed to get out with a chance to go up 8-7) matching up against Jasmin.

This is really exciting!

Finally, fellow poster Jimmy M was my guest for the session last night, and we had a grand old time! He''s a great guy.

WOW! A superstar in the making.

Are you sure that was Jimmy? Not Babalu? :D

A few things that really caught my eye when I watched her were how long she bridged, how powerful she broke, and that stone cold look in her eyes. WOW!!

Sounds like she plays quite strong. Personally I had never heard of her before. But after looking at her picture on the front page I will definitely be watching her..errr...her game when it is on TV. hehe

I am glad that someone started a thread about her. I watched that match also last night against Gerda. She was fearless, and it was fun to watch. I saw also that she bridges from a very long distance. I wanted to get some of the Euro's on here posting what they know about, as I thought she plays on the Euro tour as well. The One, any thoughts?

Talented

At only 20 years old, she sounds like a player to watch. Her and Pamela Treadway seem to be the two best up-and-comers among many that are vying for the big time.

Can't wait to see Pamela Treadway at the age of 20. She's only 18 now. The women are getting more and more exciting to watch.

Found some interesting facts about Jasmin last night while doing some research online.

Jasmin took third at the World Championships this year. She was eliminated by Shin-Mei Liu in the semis and then Liu lost to Ga Young in the finals. Jasmin defeated both players this week in Vegas.

When Jasmin won the Amateur Nationals, she earned a spot in the 2002 Nationals. In that tournament, she defeated Helena on the one loss side. While that was 4 years ago, I imagine that win will give Jasmin just a little more confidence going into the match with Helena. (As if she needed any more confidence)

Jasmin a is natural talent and comes from a family with at least 3 poolplayers, his father Albin Sr. and his younger brother Albin. If I remember right, Jasmin finished in medals of Austrian champs when she was 12 and came very close beating Gerda back then. She dominated year after year European Champ girl division and now she's hungry for more. Never seen so confident, arrogant (in a good way) and determined young pool player (both sexes). She's also breathtakingly entertaining to watch: fast pace, offensive and doesn't take too long between shots. Watched her matches at the EPC 2005 and she was running out from everyone, firing those long shots in and running through 14.1 racks like nothing could stop her. Definitely a world champion in the making. Last year she started dominating EPC women's division and I noticed it didn't take long when she realized there were hardly any competition for her. She's just so good. Now she has played in a few Eurotour events (men) and beaten a few good players there. Well, she shoots like a guy anyway. :p

Just some things that comes to mind about Jasmin. Watch out for her... includes you too Tina ;)

Edit: she also has a website:

Well, the semifinal is in the books, and it appears that Jasmin is human after all. Surely, despite winning the match, she's very disappointed with her play Friday. When she broke and run to open the match, one could never seen her lackluster effort coming, and in the last rack, she broke and run again to save the day.

A repeat performance of this sort and Allison will cruise tomorrow, but it would surely make for greater theater if Jasmin recaptures her Thursday form, with which she would have a great shot to win this title.

Win or lose, though, this has been an incredible run for Jasmin who has now beaten Ga Young Kim, Kelly Fisher, Karen Corr, Gerda hofstatter, Shin Mei Liu and Helena Thronfeldt, all of them establish superstars of women's pro pool.

Tomorrow should be fun!

I've seen her play a few events on the Euro Tour this year and shes had some very good results. I think she beat Scottish player Valentine in Prague who is a pretty good player and has played in the mens WPC!

I think I said to a few guys in Germany a cople of weeks ago that she's doing exactly the right thing playing on the Euro Tour and it won't be long before she wins the world title.

It does seem Jasmin's game is coming along in leaps and bounds with more big tourneys under her belt.

One of the few big names missing from the event is Zhou Meng Meng. Pictured below with Jasmine in Adelaide where Zhou Meng Meng won the World Junior title in 2004.

Zhou Meng Meng told me today that she had problems with her visa, otherwise she would have been there. Unfortunately Zhou Meng Meng doesn't get nearly as much tournament play as she needs.
