Beatem down wit a Varney

Well as some to most of yall know I turned 24 years of age yesterday.......Many thanks to all!

Well we had a damn good tourney in my 1 red light town where I shoot league and barely gets any tournies whatsoever.......In a good fun local bar with 4 beatup barboxes with 2 that plays pretty well with Simonis 860. 8 ball tourney best 2 of 3 matches.........Time to put my Varney in action!

We managed to fill a 32 man bracket and even had a small womens tourney.. It was $20 entry per man with a $5 stating Calcutta........... Needless to say I bought myself for $5.....yay ..........I watched a few players creep over$100... Mike Singleton and Rocky Scoucci (typo maybe) edged over $200...

We Calcutta ends and its time to get the ball rolling......Im up on table 1 for my 1st round match against a very good 8 ball player in our area anmed Henry Luke....I get in game and take it away 2-1 after he tried the 2nd Ball break and sunk the 8 ball and scratched on the 3rd rack.....Yay 1st match down......

The tourney progressed with some good matches.........I go back to the bracket to see who I gots to play next and none other that Rocky Scoucci(skootchie).. I break first rack....play safe........or attempted.......he runs out.......Next rack it goes back and forth and he gives me ball in hand and I finish the rack.......3rd rack it goes back and forth.......The 8 was hangin in the side with too of my balls just chillin near both headrail corner pockets......he tried to slow roll on the worst table in the bar and it stops before it drops.......I runout my last remaining balls and the 8.........Rocky isnt happy...

Well a fcouple hours go by. Matches being played in the winners bracket and losers.......Finally I get to play again............I play a lookin cue repairmen and a great guy by the name of Bobby Vassuer......I break. run all my balls to the 8 and get hooked......I miss the kick and he runs out only to make the 8 and scratch....I break and next and once again I run all my balls to be left horrbily like so.......(where the chalk is located is where I had to hit the cueball)

I took my aim using the method of measuring with the cue and whatnot. Dont know the name o the method..........I hit it dead center cueball at pocket speed and drilled its straght in the heart of the pocket!! YAY

So now Im in hte semi finals.....Lots of my friend already knocked out of the tourney with 1 of ym good friends and coach still in it on hte losers side...

Well Now I have to play the 3rd best player in the tourney by the name of Robley Fontenot.....I break first rack and it goes back and forth...... I manage to run away with it....next rack I broke and ran to my last ball.....rattled it leaving the cue dead in ofr the 8....He runs out!!.....3rd rack it slightly goes back and forth........I missed a my last ball into the side pocket and he finishes......Imout of Semi's and into the loser bracket.....

Now I have to jsut win 1 more match to be promised money......and I have to play none other than the guy who has been working with me on my game.....Jeremy Bellard.....

I broke first rack and he safetied back and forth.....I left him open and he started his run......he missed a key shot nad I ran out.......2nd rack I break dry and he runs out . plays safe.....I failed to play back and he runs out..... 3rd rack he breaks.... runs 2 balls and pots the 8 out of turn.........he is mad......Im smiling on the inside............

So yay lucky me promised 4th place which pays $190 total with Calcutta...Remeber I bought myself for 5 bucks :)..

So Now I get to play none other than Mike Singleton.......Nerves sets in.......he breaks first rack......it goes abck and forth with safeties.......he runs out and rattles his last ball leaving me with just 2 of my balls left. I run out........1-0.....I break very hard and it goes back and forth then I get a run going......but contantly getting out of line.....I have 2 balls remaining and he forces me to jump a ball.....Missed it the pocket by a whole diamond........ he runs out........3rd rack. he breaks and runs..........Walks up and tells me happy Birthday!!!!! LOL He complimented my game and stroke........i take it to heart......I collect my 4th place $190 dollar winnings.....

This is most cash I ever won in a tourney....... They normally dont get that big in my lil area. Normally like $75 -100...........But my confidence is thru the roof right now....... It was quite a tough field with lots of local talent there......and then getting 4th and cashing in on my Bday was jsut great!!!

Well my friend Robley Fontenot is in hte hotseat and has to play a guy by the name of Ritchie........he asks to use my Varney since all he was using was a house cue cause his cue it sgetting some work done on it........He takes the tourney 2-1 winning a lil over $700.....

Looks Like I had beat them down with my Varney..............Some using Schon's, Gilberts, Jerry Olivier..........and a number of others......



Now Im off to another tourney today..........out of town. playing pretty much the same group and then some...............WISH ME LUCK!

I know that you are a barbox specialist and that Varney is a hell of a cue. As you know I'm just a gimpy old varmint that is danged near blind. However I'll play you some fifty dollar sets on a neutral barbox around Baton Rouge somewhere and I'll use a cue that I'm making out of a table leg I found in a friend's attic. How is that for a deal, heads up eightball!

It's quite an accomplishment that he even has the Varney in hand to play with instead of still being stuck getting the runaround and getting avoided after a year or more of waiting for a cue that was promised within a couple of months. The high finish in the tourney is quite an accomplishment too. Congrats!
 
Congrats Cajun... Sounds as if the pool Gods were with you ... I don't think it would of mattered if you were using a Varney , Gus , Barry or Szam or BB... It sounds like it was your day and you were getting the rolls ... And mixing in some good shooting when needed ... I respect you for sticking up for the cue maker you believe in though ... Like you I prefer the bar boxes but like a friend of mine says when I'm winning tournaments.
" The sun does'nt shine on the same dogs a$$ all the time if it did we would'nt be showing up here every week battling it out to win this thing" Enjoy your placement and your money ... And great job against what sounds like some heavy competition....

I remember the first tome I beat my teacher out of a tourny he was happy for me ... But it was alot harder to do the second time .... :)

I second this. Don't really recall the last time a baseball player thanked their Rawlings bat for hitting a homerun.
 
True enough..........But I mean the Cue really plays well and the hit is so sweet.....

Well I got the screws put to me tonite......Finished 2 out the cash.........put out by my coach/buddy Jeremy........But I did get a few break-n-runs :)

Hu.........Give me a while to get my game up and lose the fear of gambling..........I am not much of a gambler but have not really put myself to the test.......nor can I really afford to gamble with cash I barely have..........You know how it goes............Have money to eat for the next week or dont lol.... but no worries........ 1 day we shall meet up.........Im trying to plan a trip to Buff's soon.............. I heard rumors of Gary Abood and SHannon Murphy matching up there...............

WOW! i just loved your tournament story! you did Great kido!!!!

as i was reading more and more, i was so hoping you won the tournament, but that "will be next time"!! now that you have gone so far, it is only a little bit farther! do it!!

wish you all the best for the future of your game.

and you were so kind to lend your beloved Varney to your friend! i am not so sure i could be so kind with my favorite cue! my compliments to you.

and last but not least: HAPPY 24TH BIRTHDAY old man, (old maybe to you, but you're just a youngin' to me, cause i am really an "old" man)!

This reads like the varney was a handicap...:rolleyes:

It's the indian not the arrow, but the indian shoots straighter with a bow he's comfortable with.

It's great to get in the money. Wish I had a tourney around here that paid $190 for 4th. That's about double what the rinky dink weekly tourney here pays for first, and there's never a calcutta...:angry:
It is the only game in town...

Good on you getting in the cash, I hope there are many more money days for you.

not getting out much myself

Not getting out much myself but Buff has moved a barbox into the new side room he opened up awhile back since when it was up front it was just used as a writing table! That one would be fine with me and I have never been on it . . . yet! :smile: :wink: :smile:

The table leg still needs some work anyway. Been in the attic thirty years so I don't think warpage will be an issue!

Hu If I remember how them Diamonds there play. I dont have a snowball's chance in hell.......so I stick to barbox :):) but I love heads up 8 ball......


So very true its the Indian not the arrow... I mean I always hear a good poolplayer can shoot with any cue which I partially agree.......But Im too finicky when it comes to playing with any cue........Right weight. good tip..... balance.........shaft taper..........and my Varney is jsut a part of my arm now......

Thru-out the tourney he was.. on his final match eh asked if he could use my cue..... he used it for most of the White Diamonds Tourney a month or so back.........

Congratulations on your win, but don't forget to give yourself a little credit as well -- YOU were the one who played and got in the money.

And, don't forget, it's those other guys' fault for shooting with no-name cues like Schon, Gilbert and Olivier. I mean, really, what were they thinking... :D
