Becoming a professional

Hi Sarah,

Keep in mind that when you go 2-2 in a WPBA tournament you win $1000 to $1300. A man goes 2-2 he doesn't come in the money.

The skill level after Allison and Karen drops drastically so that you have a very good chance to compete against the top 30. Whereas in a top men's tournament everybody can on any given day play as well as Kieth, or better than him.

Sarah, evidently college/University is not for you. It is not for everyone. But when you get tired of the partygirl, funtime, routine, you can always find some man and get married and have him support you. Or go back home to mom and dad. That doesn't work for a man.

LOL

Mapman, you fought the good battle against cancer and I congratulate you. Come down to Florida where every fifth person has done that. But that is a very good reason to keep your job and maintain your health insurance. I would venture to say that none of the pros have any health insurance. You get a relapse and without insurance you will put your family in the poor house.
Is that what you want for your kids?

Jake

Jake,

It's so nice to have a response from you again. I was just forgetting what it was like to be put down in such a nice fashion.

Thank you for pointing out that I sometimes go 2-2 in the tournaments. You are right, it doesn't pay much. And you are also right, the play on the women's tour does drop a little after Karen and Allison. But if you noticed lately, they both tend to get beat. I understand the men play better and all of that. I totally agree. I also agree the competition is much deeper for the men and it is harder to make money.

Yeah, you are right Jake, college wasn't for me. It was for a time and I got good grades. Sorry being "normal" just didn't work out. I know that really irks people like you. But you are right, I'm really living it up...partying like crazy and having fun. You obviously know me too well. Oh and when it all gets done I can't believe you figured out my plan. I mean afterall I was taking applications for a boyfriend. Maybe I can just do that and find myself a nice man to take care of me because obviously, I can't do it on my own. And I guess when that nice guy gets done caring for me and realizes that I'm just a pool player, I can run back to mommy and daddy. Just so you know, I know plenty of guys who find a nice woman to take care of them and plenty of guys who end up back with mommy and daddy.

Mapman, don't listen to Jake. He is angry about something in his life and likes to try to stop people from following their dreams.

hey dickhead, what is your obviously obssessive and overwhelming problem with sarah????

do you even know her personally??

everytime something like this comes up you take the time to be the biggest fucking prick and bash her for no apparent reason.

why don't you mind your own damn business.

oh, and before you start that "only stupid people cuss" line of yours..........

fuck you.

jjinfla = troll????

Wow, I just searched the forum for the most recent posts by jjinfla. Go ahead and do the same - you will be shocked (not) to find that almost every single post listed on the first search page is an antagonistic piece of tripe; like the one above. My opinion is that if jjinfla was really interested in these subjects he could find a more moderate way to express his opinion. If he is a troll, then he will continue to attack in this manner. Sounds to me like he is more interested in flaming than pool. Read these posts yourself and decide - I already have.

I didn't find it NICE at all, Sarah. It was a verbal put-down, very undeserving, too! You're one of the most charming WPBA pros I have ever had the privilege to meet, and keep on keeping on the way you're going. You're doing just fine! :)

And while you're pursuing your goals and reaching them playing professional pool, JJinFLA is sitting on the sidelines from the outside looking in.

Bravo to you, Sarah, for your recent win. For a youngster, you've accomplished quite a bit on your way to the top. FWIW, there's a reason why nobody wished JJinFLA a happy birthday the other day. Some folks are habitual pessimists, and then there are folks like you, Sarah, a breath of fresh air and a beautiful ray of sunshine. JMHO, FWIW!

LOL, I see I wasn't the only one that noticed! :p

You can do like two guys did recently. They both hated their jobs. They both LOVED pool. They both quit their jobs, opened up a pool room so that they could play as much pool as they wanted and supply enough money to take care of their families and be happy with their jobs. The pool room didn't pay that much but they got lucky and bought out the owner of the pizza joint next door who wasn't doing a very good job of managing the pizza hall. Now they have enough money to take care of both of their families. One of them still wants to be a pro, the other doesn't care about being a pro but they are both glued to their jobs because they realize that it is better to have food on the table every day. However, if you can just get your
better-half working, making enough money to support you in a pool career---Go for it. (She might not stay around much longer unless she really likes pool.)
Warm Regards,
JoeyA
P.S. Invest some money if some QUALITY pool lessons, and see if you can improve to the level of your local pros, winning some of the local tournaments.

I hope I get some feedback from the pros on this one. I am at the point in my life where my pool game is very good, but I just can't get over the hump and beat the pros consistently. I play in the regional tour events, and can upset a pro every now and again, but I'm more likely to lose both matches to professional caliber players and just make it into the money rounds and break even or make a little cash. One thing I notice after I play well and lose to McCready or Davis 7-5 or 9-7 is that these guys don't work other than playing pool. Right now, I have a decent career and make pretty good money. Although I would love to try to become professional and play pool for a living, I know I would have to take my lumps for a while until I could make enough money to survive. So my question is: Do I have to totally give up my career and focus all my attention on my pool game to take a chance at turning pro and making living playing pool? or, Can I continue to work a regular job and try to increase my practice time and expect to be able to improve to the level to compete with the professionals that play pool every day of the week? I wanted the feedback from the pros because I'm sure they were all faced with this dilemna at one point or another. When do you know when it's time to drop the "traditional" lifestyle and jump into professional pool? and, can you do it halfway or you just have to take the plunge? Oh, by the way, I'm hating my job lately.

Please help

Nice reply Sarah, well I think we both share the same ideals, even if I wasn't brave enough to follow mine before finishing school like yourself. However I can tell you (and 99% of people may disagree) but I quickly realised that Money Doesn't make you happy, but it can make you HAPPIER, Big difference. Some of my best memories while travelling have come when I've been broke yet some of my worse memories in life have been when I have had tons of cash. At the end of the day we may or may not only live once so you make the most of it and do what you want to do, its your life. I am sure not missing my 9-late job coding, getting unfit, a bad back, RSI and bad eyes (the need for glasses was the final straw lol!). Somebody once said to me that he lives everyday as though it's his last, because one day it will be. Too True.

Congrats on your recent win!

Cheers

Doesn't it feel good to get all that fucking anger out of your systems boys and girls?

I didn't realize you miss Harry and Fast Larry so much.

Fire away, I can take it.

Bob Byrne has the best advice for aspiring pool players. Quit your job, divorce your wife, and take up the game. Go for it. You only live once.

Ah what a relief it is to talk to numb nuts on a computer. Isn't it?

Look for sympathy in the dictionary.

Jake

I can't agree - John McEnroe said that there was nothing in the world better than being a professional athlete at the top of his game. I say go for it - the worst that can happen is that you'll fail miserably - the best is that you'll become rich and successful (hey you never know). The guarantee is that you'll have a lot of fun and know for sure at the end what you could acomplish in the game.

So what’s going on Mapman? Did you turn pro, or what?

EZ, I dont mean this in a negative way at all but I am.very curious as I see this from time to time and I always wonder the same thing...... How did you stumble across a 13 year old thread especially one as random as this lol? Like I said dont care about the resurrection at all but stil very curious???

Just doing a little research through the search function and stumbled across this gem. Always curious to see what these players are up to after such a long time has passed. Mapman is a good dude.

Gotcha. Do you use the AZ search function or do the Google/ AZ search cause on the rare occasion I search something everytime I use the AZ search inhet NADA but the Google method seems to work fairly well?

It depends. I usually use the "advanced search" function on here if I know the user's name or the thread title I am looking for. I use google if I'm not sure it's forum related.
