Bender Pics & Question

Nice simple looking ebony Bender with ivory ferrules and one of the smoothest and softest leather wraps I've ever seen. The white joint is sleeved and it could be ivory but I can't tell for sure. This cue sure hits nice (subjectively speaking)

Question for Bender experts - is it typical for Bender to put different thicknesses (hope thats the right terminology) on the black ringwork on each side of the white joint material? The ring on the shaft is much thicker than the ring on right below the white joint.

The thickness of the ringwork on the shaft matches other Bender shafts that I own.

Was told that perhaps Bender did that so that he could have replacement shafts ready that matches all his cues. That does make sense but sure makes the joint look a little out of whack.

I would have to say that either the shaft was not made for the or the ring at the joint was made under sized and incorrectly. But I would contact Bender, because he is the only that can say for sure.

But, you are right it looks funky!!

My opinion

My guess is that that is NOT the original shaft that came with the cue. I have a Bender with the same ringwork as your cue and both of my shafts ringwork matches the butt section identically.

i seriously doubt Bender would that go out of the shop like that.you said that your other shafts match this, then i would think that the joint has been repaired.

Thanks Kevin.

I emailed Mike Bender and hopefully I'll hear back. As I said in my original post, I have two other Benders and the ringwork on these shafts match exactly with the others.

What is interesting is that the length of total ringwork on the buttside of this cue (the white section and black chain ring area together) matches the length of total ringwork on my other Benders and is the same length as the ringwork on the shafts. The other Benders have his regular black ringwork and I'm wondering if he shortened up the black area on this cue so that the total length of the ringwork, including the white, matched the shaft.

Hope that doesn't read like gibberish-I've only had six beers, some cough medicine and a couple of margaritas so I should be okay (just kidding).

Hello Mason,

Nice ringwork on your cues !!

Hopefully, I'll hear back from Mike Bender. I acquired this cue in a multi cue/$$ trade and don't have a lot of $$$ in it. I noticed the oddity before the deal was consummated but the thing hit so darn sweet (subjectively speaking) that it was worth a shot. If its not typical Bender, I'll send it to him and see if he can make it legit.

Regards

Keith

Or another way of looking at it would be... the fact that the shaft or cue (either one) might not be bender could be a cue maker made a shaft for the customer...... BCM cues are very similar... JMO.

Thats certainly a possibility. However the pin is engraved Bender. Gilbert has similar ringwork to Benders as does BCM.

Benders have a brown tinge within the silver ladderwork and all six shafts have that brown tinge as well as the same taper.

if you look down on it is it solid white or can you see ebony around the pin?

Ebony around the pin. Its an ivory or white phenolic sleeve.

If the joint was repaired, it was done by someone who knew what they were doing. I think it would have been easier to just match the rings on the shaft without adding the white section.

If I don't hear back from Bender via email, I'll call him on Monday or Tuesday. Erik Lee is a bit a Bender whiz also, I might give him a try.

As nutso as it could be, it seems like seen I've another Bender that had the same joint set up. It'll be interesting to see what Mike Bender has to say.

That is a very nice looking cue.

Best as I can tell, he never answers emails, Keither. Bryan actually has the same trackwork as Bender's. I've had him make more than one Bender shaft. The brownish ebony inside the rings is spot on for Bender, but I don't think that the shafts collars are original either.

Take care,

Steve

Hey Steve

You betcha-Bryan rings are right on.

I'll try and call Bender tomorrow. I mic'd the tapers on all the Bender shafts I have (can you tell I've been a bit bored lately) and all of them are exactly the same.

We'll see.

If he wants me to send it to him, I'll do just that. If its not his work and he can replace the collars on the butt, I'll let em do it.

No travel for me next so I might stick in my case and stop by Clicks and see what you think.

Mucho Regardo-
