wow i havent heard him mentioned in years! how is he? does he still play? we played knock poker for 2 days once and he had me laughing nonstop.:)

The Goose

Benny Conway had this crazy act that he used to put on. It wasnt until years later that I discovered that it wasnt really an act.

the Beard

The Goose plays a guy in Vegas and busts him. He goes for more money and the next day Benny beats him again. Once more the guy reloads and for the third straight day Benny robs him. The guy rants and raves for five minutes about what a bad game it is and what a thief Benny is.

When he finally gets all done Benny looks at him with a straight face and says "I'll see you back here tomorrow." Everyone cracks up and Benny just smiles and walks out.

I think you mean 6 card knock rummy....
Benny sidled* up to me at the greyhound dog track while I was cashing an $1,800 winning ticket and asked how I picked that mutt, I told him that I always bet the pretty grey dog. He laughed and 'borrowed' $50.
Doug
( I got it back shortly afterwards at the Tampa horse track. I watched him from afar until he had a winning ticket and followed him to the window. I sidled* up to him and said that I'd just lost all my money on the pretty grey horse and could I please have that FIFTY he owed me. He laughed and handed it over ) :)

*SIDLE; To go or move with one side foremost; to move sidewise; as,
to sidle through a crowd or narrow opening.

gosling

bennys, son goes home to missouri to visit grandma, his dad tells him when you get there look up chuck starkey, if theres any action he well know where. i take him to the place with the most action and he gets matched up with a guy i've never seen bet over a $5, i tell him he's wasting his time, but i've got half the action, somehow he gets this guy betting in a game he cannot win, results we split $1500.

Benny's ways

I remember when I was playing the Regionals of APA in St. Louis, back in 1982, (just started and noone knew anyone) and those familar with the rating system of the APA, Benny was a 5 !!!! LOL. Benny always wanted a piece of the pie. He was fine as as long as he was in action.

Benny's son is Benny Jr. I haven't seen him for years but he went between the Tampa/St. Pete area and North Carolina. 32-35 yrs old.

For years he has been known as Little Goose around Tampa.
D.
( we don't see much of Little Goose since his running buddy Richie Rich moved north )

Benny, Jr. came through Athens once with David Broxson to play in a tournament. He was pretty funny and he rivals Tony Watson and Luc Salvas with how fast he shoots. We had him, Broxson, and Bruce in the calcutta and they swept the top 3 spots.

Saw lil Benny in D.C.C., heard he shot like his Dad or better. Watched him play a match.. No way..

I was Goose's practice buddy for years in Tampa. If he' still around he's in his 70's. I learned a tremendous amount from Benny by playing him 9 ball for hours at a time. He and his wife Sandy are good friends of mine. I wish he would give back the 2 horse racing books he borrowed from me years ago. LOL!!
