it seems that there is a lot of controversy surrounding the nick van den berg earl strickland match, well, I WAS THE FAN IN THE AUIDENCE!! please start a new thread at the forum, titlled, "Bernie Friend confesses" i can't get on it to write, just cut and paste this exactly please, hey i got you a soda, didn't i? ok print this word for word, thanks:~~~~~~::

Linda's note - I took the liberty of adding spaces where I could and editing swear words. Did not want to get banned! The rest is verbatim Bernie. It hurt me a lot to leave in all the typos, ROFL. :p

being an ipt player,i have been exposed to two players that have been nothing more than well, cry baby's and assh%*^. mike sigel and earl strickland, although talented in their day, are now over the hill insane people, who are disturbing obnoxious, and just out of bounds.

people say root for americans, well people,i will root for whomever i feel like rooting for. the american way is freedom, freedom to vote and root for whomever you'd like, it just so happens to be, that i like nick van den berg, and i'm an american.

i decided to watch the earl strikland vs. van den berg match. nick was quiete as usual and business like, whilst strickland was talking out loud and being disrespectful, at one point, nick van den bergs family wer'e talking quietly amongst themselfs, and strickland turned to them, and said something to the effect of "shut up" this was wrong, you tell the ref, or you say in a nice way, please stop talking, simple, and kind, but no, so i got pissed off, and nick got so pissed,he took a time out, when he came back, i screamed out "let's go nick!"

strickland looked right up at me, his robotic unblinking crazy eyes locked upon mine, and he said "you are a traitor, you are rooting for europe, your an american, you switched sides, your a traitor" at which point, i pointed to myself, as if to say, "you wanna f*ck with me,you lunitic?!!!!!!" he stopped and went about his playing,

after the match the van den berg family and i sat down, and discussed, how strickland was unprofessional. to me, i rather root for a skillfull european, that has respect, than a demented, cry baby, who is american and needs to "pull tricks" to win his matches, and believe you me ,strickland has won EVERY ONE of his championships, by "pulling tricks" that is to say, talk to the crowd, and opponent and their family, take them out of stroke, and then earl wins, well, then why just not come right out and cheat?

for those of you thinkiing earl is talented, and has earned the right to behave this way, i say to you shame on you, just because earl is an american doesn't give him the right to have an automatic american player, root for him, this is NOT the american way, the united states was based on freedom and doing what you want freely, thus i choose to applaud the best player, and the gentlemen at the table, not the "has been" american, who has to cheat with banter and insults,

it's time earl strickland was fined hundreds of thousands of dollars, and locked out of the IPT, for i could clearly see, why europeans and canadians feel americans are a$$holes, look who we have represnting us?!!!

now speaking of a$$holes, mike sigel and i had words, here is what happend, mike went onto a practice table after he lost, and yelled at the poor man who put the cushions on the ipt tables, mike was going on and on and on how the cushions were unpredictable, and sometimes they were slow, other times they were fast, and their height and profile was no good, and the man responsible for the cushions couldn't get a word in edge wise, and the man said "please show me an example so i could fix it" mike wouldn't listen, and i was getting upset, becauase mike just wouldn't give this poor guy the right time of day, because mike feels he is above every other human, (hence the name a$$hole number 2)

so i listening to this, i had enough, i said to mike, let me see the cue,(there was only one cue in by the practice tables) i wanted to show him an easy side pocket bank, and we could test the cushions and go from there, this way everyone would be at peace again,so i asked and said to mike, "let me see the cue" and without hesitation he said "no" and went on continuing with his rampage, of this sucks and this is wrong, and so on and so on, so i blew my stack and said one more time, let me see this cue stick,he again without coming up for air said "no" so i said, "who the hell are you,to tell me no, give me that cue now!" so he quieted down and said ok, here, what?,then i showed him the shot, and everyone got peaceful, and to the point of what was bothering him about the cushions.

what is my point?
must people act like they are ABOVE everyone else? must people act rude, like strickland?

i feel not, case in point, the british, ronnie o'sullivan and jimmy white, both big stars back in the u.k. both loved and sought after, and both multi millionaires, has it gone to their heads? NO,why because they are fun, free spirited men, who do not take themselves too seriously, and believe they are gods children and can be better then they are, when i asked ronnie about his famous 147 clearence, that was in the world recod books he said "it was rubbish, a very bad clearence mate, i was out of line on all the shots" now, that is pure humble british talk, a true gentlemen, why can't the americans be more like the british?,kind open humble and honest,

what is the bottom line? i will not let anyone talk down to me,because no one is better or worse than i am, we are people human beings, black, white, american or whatever, let's have peace, and freedom, open honest humble people.

most people hate strickland and sigel, they are obnoxious baby's that can no longer compete with the non-american players, simple and true, if you look very carefully, you will see that the non-american players are taking 4 mins. on average per shot, and are going slowly like surgeons, while americans are rushing through and losing, there is a lesson to be learned here, let's not be so proud and loud to be americans, give the rest of the world there due, live in peace, and stop obnoxious rude people american or not, from competing on such a prestigious tour as the IPT.

i root for who i wish to root for, for i am an american and it is my right to do so, i am free, let me root for the best man, regardless of their nation. i look forward to competing in future ipt events,i love america, more so than any other place in the world, but i look for excellence in the pool world, and i found it in nick van den berg, from holland,is that so wrong? suppose a dutch fan wanted to cheer for strickland rather than van den berg, should he be punished? i think not. do what you want, just don't hurt anyone in the process, and above all, act courtious,

Bernie Friend~~north carolina.

Bernie's comments

Bernie ... It probably would have carried more weight if you had at least won 1 of your matches. I thought you were a New Yorker.

So one's skill at pool determines what one can or cannot say about pool?

99% of the folks on this forum - pack it in. We're no longer allowed to speak about pool. We're simply not good enough at it. :/

now speaking of a$$holes, mike sigel and i had words, here is what happend, mike went onto a practice table after he lost, and yelled at the poor man who put the cushions on the ipt tables, mike was going on and on and on how the cushions were unpredictable, and sometimes they were slow, other times they were fast, and their height and profile was no good, and the man responsible for the cushions couldn't get a word in edge wise, and the man said "please show me an example so i could fix it" mike wouldn't listen, and i was getting upset, becauase mike just wouldn't give this poor guy the right time of day, because mike feels he is above every other human, (hence the name a$$hole number 2)

I was standing next to these guys at the table during this whole episode. That wasn't the guy who put the rubber on the rail - that was Greg, founder of Diamond Billiards!!! (Who has posted here before).

BTW, Greg is a great guy, nice to talk to, helpful and very knowledgable.

I don't want to derail or hijack this thread into an equipment topic, but Sigel was completely wrong. It was not the Artemis rubber, the profile, or the height. It's the cloth. It slides causing a bizarre action of the ball off the rail. It is to some degree kind of unpredictable as the surface area of the cushion as well as the material, fuzz etc are all a different thickness. Hohmann and Manalo didn't seem to experience these problems if you know what I mean? The greater players adjusted to how the ball slides off the rail much quicker and it was a moot point for the elite players. Others couldn't make the adjustment and missed very simply bank shots and missed position badly when doing 3-railers.

Also, having talked to a number of players, they are all convinced that the IPT balls are lighter. A few commented to me that they are junk. You can actually feel the number on the ball when the balls were no more than 2 days old! Also, the IPT ordered these balls to be made to have more luster and shine. I believe this changes the play of the ball a little bit and it altered the way they throw and collide with one another just a touch.

Anyhow, Sigel's ego was damaged badly with a Round 2 knockout and he needed something to blame.

I seem to recall a different sitaution, Bernie was mostly agreeing with Sigel and didn't want to test the table, but prove Sigel's point by demonstrating how bank shots "don't go"...saying "We're the players and we know"...and other such comments and being quite animated about the bad performance of the table - they they claimed.

Again, the guys at the top never really made any equipment complaints (with the exception of the balls being lighter but they adjusted for that). These are just excuses for losing - plain and simple. Sorry, that's the reality of it. I was 2ft away from this whole thing and I remember quite well.

OK, about Earl. Wasn't there so I can't comment - but just note that when Earl is playing, he'll be involved in something. This is NOT a defense of Earl, but if you notice something, it might make you think.

Earl played Efren on the TV table. I got to sit on the front table facing the table front row directly between Efren and Earl. Earl lost this match. He didn't do any talking, he didn't do any of his antics. There's a reason for that. 1] Efren is the toughest man on Earth to shark. 2] Earl actually respects Efren greatly 3] Efren or the fans did NOTHING to bother Earl.

Earl was talking at the table on his incoming inning at one point, and some fans behind me began their smirking and laughing in reaction to Earl's talking. They were doing so because they thought Earl was being an a$$hole again etc.....BUT - the fans are the morons because they didn't hear what Earl said. This is what he said -

"I'm very fortunate to even be at the table right now against this guy after not making a ball on the break"...

This was early on in the match. He was saying how lucky he was to even get to shoot against Efren. He respects him, and that was Earl's way (by talking) of coping with the pressure/stress. This was a sincere statement because he knew exactly who he was playing against. Also, Efren never pulled any shark moves or did any talking or anything ungentleman like in the entire tournament. He sits still, quiet and respectful when he's not at the table.

Now, when Earl played Alcano - he was saying some crazy and stupid things. But he doesn't always do that - but because of his reputation, anything he does say, even if it is respecting his opponent is almost never completely heard and assumed to be "complaining" or something else by the crowd.

If no one in the crowd talks when Earl is shooting - he'll never say a thing. That was my experience watching so many of his matches. If someone is a clown - and there were MANY, Earl will make the situation worse for himself by engaging that fan and creating a scene. Having watched so many of Earl's matches, I can say that MOST of the time, Earl was not the instigator -- there are many people who literally follow him around the tournament to heckle and harass him. Do little things they know will get a reaction out of him. That's because Earl has buttons that are easy to press and everyone knows which ones they are.

Earl is a sucker for letting that get to him. Like many people said, if he would just STFU and play his game - he'd be more loved than Efren.

Gee whiz ....

You don't recognize a little satirical humor. I was merely suggesting that perhaps, just perhaps, that Bernie was 'out of his element' just a little. Sometimes, well meaning people that are out of their element, can be perceived as 'annoying' by the other party involved.

I dont know what winning or losing a match has to do with his opinion of Sigel & Strickland. I dont value a person's opinion more or less just because they can draw their ball. Unfortunately, most people on this site do.

Anyways, I appreciate his point of view & hearing an account first hand what went on. I do find it somewhat confusing, though, because I went to the IPT website to see who exactly Bernie Friend is. I found this quote from him about the IPT "It was such a treat to watch the Hall of Fame players in action. " I guess he would like to withdraw that comment now.

Sometimes humor is tough with just text. :)

Hi Snapshot,

I didn't win any matches either (close, but no cigar) but I think Bernie's point is more about people in general...having respect for each other as human beings, regardless of their skills.

I give everyone the same respect, regardless of their abilities, until they do or say something dishonorable or burn me in some way.

Edit - Oh, OK, gotcha with the humor. I figured as much. ;)

Speak for yourself!

LOL Bernie tried to make it sound like he was shutting up Sigel, but it turns out he was agreeing with him.

And about Nick VB, Bernie used to post on this forum under the screen name "The Silencer", and he often used to make posts years about about how Nick VB was the best player in the world, and how he was a huge fan, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if he was lying about that incident too.

Bernie should be banned from the IPT for spreading false information LOL

LMAO, I don't even know where to begin with this thread!!

1. This is the first time in history that I've ever agreed with Bernie. Ever. (about MS & ES being a$$holes)

2. Bernie saying this.."insane people, who are disturbing obnoxious, and just out of bounds." about anyone other than himself is basically the pot calling the kettle black. He literally just described himself and the way he acts here on the forums.

3. Knowing Bernies track record on here, I'm more apt to listen to Bola Ocho and I don't doubt one min that Bernie was a butt kissing weasel and agreed with everything MS said.

4. Greg Sullivan is one heckuva nice guy that's done A LOT for pool. The players and fans owe Greg nothing short of respect. I can't stand MS but after reading the way he acted towards Greg, I've all of the sudden got this massive urge to b!tch slap him. Of course I never would unless MS was in my face and insulted/assaulted me personally, but it still doesn't change the fact that I would enjoy b!tch slapping him for sport.

5. Watchez, were you not here when 8ballbernie was posting like a raving lunatic on here? Were you here back in the day of "the silencer", a person that emulated FL so much that he could almost be mistaken for being FL? Both "the silencer" (who was banned) and "8ballbernie" are Bernie Friend.

It seems to me that your bad manners were preceded only by your bad manners.

Nope I wasn't here then or don't remember his posts.

Bernie I think you are WAY off about Earl Strickland's ability. I don't even know where to start.

As for Canadian's thinking Americans are a$$holes, I think we have negative view of the American government, not American people.

As for Ronnie. There are plenty of stories about him, I assure you. During his match with Peter Ebdon last year, Ronnie was complaining to the crowd about slow play (sound familiar). Though at some points he was right to complain. And I wouldn't have expected Ronnie O'Sullivan to say anything different about his record 147. If he played a snooker match and won 10-0, with 10 consecutive 147's, he would say "I played alright, but I wasn't too happy with a few reds that wobbled before dropping. Perhaps I can do better next time".

AMEN!!

Your exactly right! I watched every game of every match he played. Not ONCE, did Earl instigate anything. (with the exception of the Sammy Jones incident, which carried over from Reno)

Leave the man alone, if you don't want trouble....plain and simple.

Bernie WASN'T the guy in the audience all the ruckus started about. Bernie hollered out once....and shyly pointed to himself. Like 'Me"??

Rebecca (announcer) was sitting next to him. She corrected him, right after he said it. He put her in a bad situation with his cheering for Nick during the match. Actually during the game.

He intentionally provoked Earl during the match, it was his soul purpose for doing so. He was just looking for a reaction from Earl, and he succeeded.

Bernie is cutting his own throat...not that it makes any difference, as he WON'T be around too much longer anyway.

Bernie is a pathological liar. It's great to have him as cannon fodder for the first IPT year. If he wins one single match in any of the next few tournaments he competes in, he's beaten the line. LOL

Ronnie didn't complain to the crowd, he had a little smile when Ebdon was taking forever, but he certainly wasn't as animated as Strickland was in his match with Nick, or in any match for that matter.

Yeah prob the worse thing Ronnie has ever done was sit with his towel over his head between shots lol, he certainly would talk or try to put his opponent off why hes at the table, big difference. He does like shorts and sandals though i hear lol, I bet he sure felt silly in the players meeting surrounded by suits!

I remember him asking the crowd what time it was, walking up to the table to check if the cueball was touching or not while it was Peter´s turn (not unlike Earl did at the end of COM), and a few other things. I would say that Ronnie isn´t the greatest gentleman in the snooker tour, nowhere near Earl obviously but no saint.
