best all round player ever

I hate to admit it but Mike Sigel was probably the best All Around player I've seen in my lifetime. Great at Straight Pool, a champion at 9-Ball, one of the best in One Pocket and played jam up Banks as well. The only players in the modern era who are in his league would be Efren naturally (an underdog to Mike at Straight Pool and Banks, a draw at 9-Ball and only a favorite at One Pocket), Buddy Hall who was Sigels' equal at 9-Ball, Banks and One Pocket but an underdog at Straight Pool and finally Steve Mizerak who was also Mike's equal at 9-Ball and One Pocket and a favorite at Straight Pool (the only one who was). Steve was not the Bank Pool player Mike was though.

Jay,

I think that putting the game of banks into the equation when comparing Efren and Sigel makes thing a little more unfair for Efren. Efren does not play that much of Banks compared to Sigel. So I think to make it equal for both parties, you should take it out or put rotation into the equation. Then you will add up the game of 8 ball to that. The result of this would be that Efren will at least at the same level of Sigel when you add the game of 8 ball while keeping the game of banks in the equation. But if you add the game of rotation on top of that or crossing out the game of banks and rotation while keeping the game of 8 ball, Efren would be the favorite of the two.

Well Jay sure do know Minguad.......did all my speech oratories on billiards/pool in college and he was where I started.....captain in the french military, did time in prison which is where he perfected his leather tip.....always heard that he requested to stay in jail longer to finish up his work on it and his newly invented shots traveled all of europe.....the great great great grandfather of artistic pool lol

Best Allaround past 50 years? and all time

got to go with you there too

Mike and Worst

or Worst Mike lol.....I swear if anyone called Worst Mike ever asks me to play I'm packing my stuff lol

Yea especially with Worst tho....most people say all around and only really think 9/8/straight or one hole......Harold played world class whatever didn't matter.......

What was the bet in johnston city Jay? Wasn't it Beanie "steering" Worst in that 40 ball run out into one hole that Harold busted!

If you carry the 7 and keep the 6 give away the 2 and then double up on the 15 lmfao

So wait effren is the best kicking pool player in the world but he can't bank?
And effren is a shoe in to win the 8 ball?

Banks is one thing but 8 ball at the professional level is a joke....its a coin toss. Thats why you never see it included in the conversation. Like 9 ball blows on the 7ft.....8 ball is the same on the big table. To wide open way to many shot options for it to be a very "professional" game.

Efren may be the best Rotation player of all time! So he does get the nod over Sigel there. In fact Sigel tried to play him Rotation many years ago in Houston. Disaster! Overall it's pretty close between these two. Only Efren had Worst's ability to adapt to and learn new games quickly.

It was a twenty ball game and yes, when Worst and Beenie busted that gaff game, that was one of the most amazing things I saw there. Harold had to run 18 and 19 balls a couple of times. In one pocket! Let's just say this. Ronnie couldn't beat that game! It was a total gaff for suckers. Worst outran the double (make that triple!) nuts.

thanks for the correction Jay.....

that was always one of the biggest tip off to me years ago that Worst was not of this earth.....

Guy beats everyone at 21 defying the mob to win the 3cush worlds.....turns to pool and burns the house down to the ground while getting "steered" or better yet screwed by Beanie and others....and he DESTROYS THEM.....

the best dam hustlers and cons to ever live tried and like you said had the not once not twice but the THRICE NUTS lol

anyone else getting steered in Harolds sitation would have been cannon fodder....

#A

he was that good

#B

I have no idea how he walked with stones the size of a small country....

#C everyone was shaking scared of him and his cajones

Skill and heart......this is all I have come to know of the man.

If he wouldn't have died so young it would be WORST WORST WORST instead of Willie this and willie that imop

Beenie was in with Harold when they beat Spivey's gaff game. By the way Vernon Elliott was Spivey's accomplice. Of course Beenie might try to beat Harold out of his end afterwards. That's how he rolled. I can see them now in their hotel room and Beenie trying to talk him into a little game of Gin or Blackjack. Beenie was something else.

Harold was actually a humble, but proud man. Soft spoken but not one to back down from anyone. He wanted a piece of Lassiter playing 9-Ball when no one else would even consider playing the man. And he hated that a young braggart like Ronnie was the king of One Pocket. He was out to dethrone him too. As much as I liked Ronnie back then, if Harold had lived and they ever matched up playing One Pocket I wouldn't have been betting on Ronnie. Worst was relentless if you know what I mean.

I think a player that was never mentioned that dominated back in the day was Mosconi. I know he kinda whored out and just did exhibitions, but he could really shoot.

And the nominees are..

My idea of an alround world championship would be...
STRAIGHT POOL..on a 9ft
SNOOKER...on a 12ft
3 CUSHION...on a 10ft
If you can play these 3 games...the rest are 'just tell me the rules...
..and bring your cash'
If this was conducted like the Giller..a lot of players belong on the
'short list'.
But when ever I think of this ..Harold Worst and Walter Lindrum come
to my mind first.
Most of my info on these two players is second hand....
The Miz raved about Worst and George Chenier admired Lindrum all to hell.

I'd like to mention at this time that Jimmy Moore belongs on this short
list..he doesn't get mentioned enough.Although not a braggart he did
have a quiet pride in the fact that no American ever got his money on
a 12 ft snooker table. And he drove me nuts when he introduced me to
3-cushion..I told him "You can't teach anybody this game 'cause you're
the only one in the world who can draw 4 rails from a distance.
And he had the calmness of a Zen master over the cue.

Of the STROKES I've actually seen...I like the Miz,Buddy Hall,Steve
Davis....and the Lion

I don't know how Jim Rempe plays 3-cushion but he beat some good
players in England....

At those three games, it has to be WORST! Jimmy Moore is also a candidate for one of the best all around players. Great 9-Ball player, and very good at all the other games, but had a tendency to finish second to the top players of his era.

I can't comment on Jimmy Reid's abilities in 1-pocket, banks or straight pool. He does, however, have several titles in 8ball, 9ball, and American Snooker. Jay, where would Jimmy stack up in the list of best evers?

hard to bel that any player would play efren theses games and like it
1 pocket
10 ball
banks
3c
8 ball
i have not seen tapes of real old school guys play
but from what i have seen efren is the best.

now think of this some are asking about the past 50 years so here is a name that goes back a little further what about the youngest world champ ever ralph greenleaf

My pick would be Efren, because he has played to such a high level for so long. Varner was/is a great player but hasn't played to that level anywhere near as long as Efren. But back in the early nineties NOBODY could touch Nick Varner.

Sigel could before he retired. In fact he was the favorite. Also Johnny, Earl and Buddy were Nick's equals at 9-Ball for sure. They were all top dogs back then, along with Efren and Jose. Nick definitely did not have a lock on anything back then. Kim was in the picture too! In the 90's I would put Varner in the top six tournament players at best. I'd rate them Earl, (Sigel until he retired), Johnny, Buddy, Jose and Nick or Efren next.

P.S. Johnny was named Player Of The Decade!

As much as I hate conceding anything to you, you're probably right! Chalk up a point for the Smooth Criminal!
Sigel needs Straight Pool in the mix. But he might have the best of it in Banks, even at Eight Ball and be a little dog in Ten Ball.
