Jay, I heard several years back that Keith ran 26 racks in a row of 9 ball playing on a bar table. I don't who he was playing, or for how much, but he ended up loosing by the end of the night to the same player.

Does anyone out there know more about this high run, or who Keith was playing at the time, or for how much, and how the two players matched up?

That may be the highest all time run of 9 ball racks, has anyone beat that run? I would say that run may have left all the players in the dust!!

Keith, if you see this post maybe you can remember the night and the game and let us know what happened?

In your quote above, I can't imagine too many players willing to hang with someone who can fire a 26 and then get the best of the matchup.

The highest run I ever heard Keith did was a 21. Bar table, against a road player (name unknown), for the cash (amount unknown), 9-ball, races to 7. Road player makes nothing on the opening break and Keith runs out the set, 3 times!!!

I hesitate to even mention this because people think I'm really spreading the BS. In fact, Keith may not be willing to verify this but this is what I heard from reliable sources in Orange County Calif. at about the time it supposedly happened.

The simplest way to settle this is by playing not talking. Each year at the DCC we have a category for best all around player under 21 and also under 16. Ask all of these players to come to the next DCC and play in Banks, One Pocket, and 9 Ball. The cream will rise to the top for sure.

Last year Michael Dechaine was the all around winner in the under 21 category.

OK, I know Efren is off topic, but since he has been mentioned...

When I was in the Navy during Nam I spent a lot of time in the Philippines mostly at Subic Bay. There was a pool room on the base and I used to play 9-ball with some of the locals from Olongapo. One time (after I had beat him) one of the locals said, "If you want a real game, you should go to Angeles City and play The Kid." I never went to Angeles City, so I have no proof either, but Efren would have been about 16 at the time, and "the kid" is "bata" in Tagalog.

Not much doubt that would have been Efren.

Stevie Moore-Jaybird - Tony Watson-Mike Mauney-Hillbilly Bryant-Kieth Bennet-Michael Coltrain-Earl Strickland-Luther Lassiter all nine from the Carolinas played awesome as 14 to 16 year olds, now we have Marcus and Adam Pendley who were beating older Pros at 12 and 13. Adam beat the mighty Earl at the crooked cue in NC in a tournament while 13 years old. Does anyone know if Denny Searcy played at a great speed when still a child, he lived in Nc but came from Cali I think.

Leonard
Glad someone remembers "the Train."

My thoughts also ...

maybe this schould be a new thread.whose the best 19 yr old today?

I seem to remember someone stating that Willie Mosconi was kinda' good at 19 ... He wasn't all that sloppy in later years either ...

First off you guys aren't reading the thread...

The thread is greatest American player at 19 and he reiterated that it is best current American player at 19. So chia isn't a candidate. I know who it is but I'm not going to say names to knock action, but he hasn't been mentioned here yet. Chuckie's been warned away from him and wouldn't give him action at DCC last year. As far as performance in tournaments is concerned Chuckie's run at Reno last year has to be the best performance of someone under nineteen of someone from the states (although he hasn't impressed me too much and I couldn't get him to play me when I was up there last) and chia ching wu has to be the best performance in the world of someone under nineteen.

i played Tony Watson when he was younger than 19-i'm pretty sure he was younger, Ouch!!!! it hurt, i never saw a shot in a race to 11.

Without a doubt

Buddy Hall, Keith, and David Matlock. I saw Buddy and David play, never saw Keith, but the rumors were rampant about his playing and how good he was/is.

First time saw David shoot, he was about 19, a 7 ahead set against Jr. Brown (Green Felt Jungle, Chapter 19), and he gave Jr. 1 shot the whole set, and Jr. was so shaken up when it happened he missed the shot, and David ran the set out. I was the one and only railbird watching, or allowed to watch them play.

You're not the first one, either.

I have heard about Matlock running 28 racks on the bar table. Shannon Daulton was the best 19 year old I have personally ever seen play. Won a World One-Pocket title at that age. But from all accounts I have heard it would have to be Keith.

Of the ones I have seen play:

Dennis Hatch
Tony Watson
Archer
Shannon D.

I think all of these guys beat the current 19 year old crop of Dechaine/Bergman/Futrell etc.

In hearing from people describe it, McCready at 19 would be my choice. Didnt he bust the payball game against champions in LA when he was like 13 or something crazy?

Lots of good young players.

CJ wasn't too bad at 19.

Neither was Jessie.

Dechain posted in an earlier thread that he just turned 21.

????????????

Wonder how many champions dodged David Howard at 19? My guess would be a sackful.

Dennis played great at 19 but he did not like matching up with Brian Groce at that age. Shannan Dalton played better than Justin at that age also.
Total agreement on Shannon, people tend to forget his early accomplishments. Like many greats, he was a monster even before he was 19.

Even though he has a ways to go before he's 19, keep your eye on a young lad from Ky. named Landon Schuffet.

Isn't Mike Banks Jr. only 19 now? Young man was hittin-um pretty sporty last weekend.

Mike is a very good player but he still gets the 7 ball from Justin.

Last night @ the poker room in a local casino, I sit down & just to my right is Ralph Jung - father of Michael Jung, 1995 Jr National Champion 14 & under. This was a kid that had raw, natural talent who basically taught himself how to play pool in his basement as a child. I met Mike & his dad 15 years ago when his dad first started taking him around to local pool rooms. He was the nicest, most well mannered kid you could ever meet.

I asked his dad why he basically quit playing pool & the immediate response was that the BCA moved their JR National Championships into pool rooms. He said that Mike really enjoyed the tournament when it was held in a tournament room at a hotel/convention center, when it was so intense you could hear your heartbeat while playing. But when the BCA switched to pool rooms, Mike didn't like the atmosphere, was not really accustomed to that setting & chose not to go back.

Mike Jung was a natural athlete, and also a top young baseball player. From his dad, he probably could have been in a minor league organization if he pursued that as well.

Mike Jung is now 27 years old & his father says he rarely plays, except for back in the basement. His dad remembered Jesse Bowman & asked what he was up to. I told him, the same as you tonight - playing poker.
