Hello, interested what everyone is using as a break cue...had a gilbert, was a much better player than a breaker, had a MIke Stacey JB I really liked but sold that...what is everyone using right now.

A basic Varney with a 1-piece canvas-resin tip. Check the sig for pictures and review. Better yet search the forums :)

If you want something more complex with inlays and such you could find a butt you like by someone else and have him make a shaft for you.

I have had a Fury / J&J / Lightning Bolt / Jerico Thumper / Pat Diveney Break Jump cues. IMO the Pat Diveney Break/Jump cue has been by far the best ! I have a Break/Jump cue being made for me by Kevin Varney i have heard nothing but good things about his break / Jump cue.
Good luck with whatever you get.

Thanks Larry

Im using a sledgehammer with a shaft made by our own Alaskan Assasin, Bryan Fisher. It works great for me. I think you should try out a ton of them and then find whatever works best for you. Because you will here various answers such as Pred BK1 and 2, Pete Omen(sp),Sledge,J&J, Mace,Gilbert etc. I think break cues are akin to Drivers in golf. Everybody has their own choice and we usually have at least 2 of them and change them often.lol

my break cue

I'm using my custom purpleheart DZ j/b cue. It works fine for me

here's the pic. its the one on the left!

Well I have both Gilbert j/b and Varney j/b/. I like my Varney j/b better.
Varney price is reasonalbe and EXCELLENT WORKMANSHIPI have and had lot of j/b cues and break cues. So far nothing can come close to Varney j/b yet.. :D
V A R N E Y J/B CUE ROCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use whatever cue I am playing with. I feel that I don't break any harder than what most players shoot on their normal shot. I often wonder why players will use a separate break cue and then they shoot every shot just as hard as their break shot was. Most of my cues also have ivory ferrules.

There's always the factor of accuracy. Most people shoot more accurately on a medium speed shot... so if you can shoot a medium speed accurate break and still get results as if you had shot harder then I'll take that route. Plus I wouldn't want to put ivory ferrules at any risk if I didn't have to.

I have been breaking and jumping with the best J/B cue ever made. Bar none guys. I can crush the rack and make 70% of attempted jump shots.
I have had this for 4 years. http://forums.azbilliards.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7757&d=1122599846

wow.. that is one of the nicest sledge hammers i have ever seen. i used to have one of the first 10 made.. it was just made out pf plain straight grain maple and wrap..if mine was that nice.. i would have kept it.. once the tip cracked, and Mike G. replaced it for free, after i got it back.. i couldnt keep the cue ball on the table..

so i ended up selling every cue i had at the time to buy my Burl Mottey and i ended up buying a Pete Omen breaker the same day..

Platimum Billiards has done a impartial rating of break cues

http://www.platinumbilliards.com/rating_break.php

hope this helps in your buying decisions.

I recently started to use a jacoby break cue it has a phenolic tip and both the shaft and forearm are laminated wood is weighs 17.60 oz. The jacoby provides a great feel and speed to the cue ball it is just my stroke which is wrong right now. I am working on getting my break stroke level so when i contact the cue ball it does not jump into the rack. The cue retails for about $300.00

I also have used a Josey sneaky pete(if you can call any of Kieth's cues sneaky), I traded it this past summer to gain some pleasure for another addiction...archery, it was wonderful as well. Kieth can also provide a jump shaft for the same cue upon request.

shoot well and shoot often

using a Varney J/B right now, i prefer it over my old Gilbert J/B..

for production breaks, bk, xbreaker and mezz pb are all reasonable as well.

I have a Falcon j/b, a Sledgehammer j/b and now I just got an X Breaker so it's "the best". :D (doesn't really matter... this geezer can't hurt the rack much anyway)

Best B/J

I got a Petree B/J from Bamacues and I can say this is an real breaker. With the hard leather tip from JW it breaks real good and you have much control on the cueball. The feedback to the handle let you know everything about the break and the power you've on the cueball. Only jumping with this tip was hard. Not the long jumps are difficult but the short jumps are not to play. I was used a all in one ferule. So yesterday I installed a phenolic tip and the power on the break was more than before and the long and short jumps are no problem now. I'm realy impressed from the J/B cues JW Petree makes. It's not only a perfect J/B. It's an real good players cue with a good tip like a Moori. No it's an awsome looking perfect cue he made.
I think I'll never be afraid of getting this cue. :)

X-breaker

I just got an X-347 xbreaker and last night was the first night out, I have to say the cue is excellent in every way. The fit and finish were excellent and it breaks great and jumps super easy. I was impressed with how well I could control the cue ball even with the super hard tip.

Jerico Stinger! I've also had a sledgehammer and a J&J from Chris (ChrisOnline). The J&J was really nice but I like the thinner butt on the Jerico. I've hit em with Icon of Sin's X347 and it breaks a ton too but they are just a little out of my price range for a j/b. Just my .02

I'm very happy with my Petree J/B. It breaks great, jumps solid (it might jump great, but I'm not a good enough jumper to tell for sure), and looks terrific.

For a lower end option, try Proficient's $99.00 J/B -- it's a modified Players cue, which seems to entail a new shaft, ferrule, tip, and quick-release joints installed by Proficient.

Best break cues

I look at it a couple of different ways:

9 ball: Pred BK II followed closely by my Mace j/b

8 ball: Mace is better for the controlled break, 2nd ball etc.

but the most important thing is proper technique, without it you got nothing...

just like golf, "it aint the club, its the man"

now jumping is a whole differnet catergory... we should discuss that sometime, that is where equipment can make a real difference... has anyone seeen a Dr. Popper from McDermott, I have got one and they are crazy to say the least...

just my thoughts,
