The best kept secret of cuebuilding!

Where to get great wood for shafts/prongs/butt?

This is a very critical process in creating a good product.

Atlas, Prather,Schmelke,Hightower & OMG Cue Components
come to mind.

Any other source that is well known that anyone cares to share?

Some have direct contacts with saw mills, but you have to buy in bulk. right?

Used to be, but now they sell to so many, it's so spread out, It's hard to get "the good stuff" any more, 2-3 years ago yes, but what I consider the good stuff and what some consider good is two different opinions. Haven't ordered from them in awhile,

There no secret anymore by the way, been along time.

Usually the best secrets are the simplest. Like your avitar states Willee. Enjoy what you are doing and don't let it become a chore.

Good to here from you again Willee.

that is one of the few questions that will not get an answer.nobody is giving up their shaft spots unless it is to a good freind.

Sax, If you are truly interested using the AZB search feature will uncover a wealth of sources for all kinds of cue woods. In fact, all but a few of the known shaftwood suppliers has already been disclosed here. Relationships with wood dealers also matter a great deal, IMO. Sometimes premium pieces will only be made available to preferred and appreciative customers. Good luck--learning about cue woods is an endless and worthwhile journey.

I HOPE I AM STILL ON YOUR PREFERRED AND APPRECIATIVE CUSTOMER LIST:D :D

I bought some #1 grade BEM off Bell Forest, 5 sticks from there ebay site and I really wasn't happy. The best birdseye I have gotten for the money to date was from Cue Components. There are an amazing amount of sources for exotic wood on the internet and I have only scratched the surface as far as testing their product but another one I like is http://www.exoticwoodgroup.com/order_pool_cue_blanks.htm . Not that I'm any kind of an authority or anything but I have bought about $4000 in turning stock over the last 3 months. Honestly Cue Components has to date treated me rather good. I treat them like " the soup nazi " but other then being slower then the norm from other suppliers they have done good by me. I do try to buy enough stock so that I never need anything and I just buy when something look's to good to pass up or I can get it really cheap. I'm a packrat that way though.

I have bought wood from about every site out there. The only way you are going to get the best pieces is to go to the supplier yourself and hand pick them.

Just for the record - I am not easy to please when it comes to wood but Martin (above) from jazznpool has furnished me some very nice wood in the past and I will buy from him in the future. It ain't easy to get on my buy again list.

Arnot the Cuemaker,

Here is how I kind of severed my ties with one wood supplier. This supplier is not known for Cocobolo, and bacote, but they have some awsome stuff and always have supplied me with what I want. I talk to the same guy every time I have ordered. Been ordering from them for 6 years. Well last year I decided I wanted to stock up on cocobolo, by the way the cocobolo I like is dark, heavy, and lots of swirls/knots. This guy knows that, and that's what I requested, he told me he had alot avalible. Well lets just say I'm willing to pay for what I want, so after investing a small fortune in cocobolo, not only was I pissed, not get what I wanted and am used to getting, but he refused to take it back saying it's dark and heavy, 2 out of three aint bad. Well that was it for him, I'm guessing I spent somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-$5000 a year between maple, coco, and bocote.

But have moved on to others suppliers, I now pretty much buy on a piece by piece basis, and get to see the piece before I buy it. I only buy the top grade materials now, that is something I learned from my friend Mason, don't skimp on wood, it will pay you off 10 fold, in the end.

As far as suppliers, find some with great wood, and great people, build a relationship, and an understanding for what you want. My newest supplier know's I'm willing to spend money on "the good stuff", and will drop him in second if he doesn't deliver, doesn't mean he won't get a second chance, but if he doesn't have what I'm looking for, then don't lie just to make a sale, that is unexcusable.

Happy wood hunting, and keep your hands off my wood.:bash:

iv bought wod from alot of ppl but bell forest is the best bem IMO. i havent delt with matin yet but will soon.
(when i can get a veneer swatch. online or by mail)

as i statd befor im lucky to have a geat wood suplier withing 30 mins of my house. i think im luckier then most. most is already seasoned

the Best wood

How do you differentiate between a good piece of wood (any type of wood)
and an exceptional piece of wood?
Knowledge of that paticular wood....grains per inch..... straightness of grains
...experience from working with that wood....

As a experienced buyer, most cuebuilders, Have a check list .....
If that piece of wood passes every part of the check list, Then it is
an exceptional pice of wood. Right?

What's on your check list?

later,
sax
