Best kept secret in cuebuilding!!!

Sax, it varies with the species and type of wood and what function it will have in the cue. Mant great looking woods are not useful for cues without coring. You cannot gain years of cue wood knowledge in an hour. It just doesn't work that way. If you seek to gain a start read through the hundreds of posts by knowlegeable cuemakers here. Asking to be spoon fed won't really help you--but you probably know that. Visit other wood sites and stop and visit wood dealers. Part of the fun is finding a jewel of a square, billlet, or board at a fair or under market price.

How do differentiate between a good piece of wood (any type of wood)
and an exceptional piece of wood?
Knowledge of that paticular wood....grains per inch..... straightness of grains
...experience from working with that wood....

As a experienced buyer, most cuebuilders, Have a check list .....
If that piece of wood passes every part of the check list, Then it is
an exceptional pice of wood. Right?

What's on your check list?

You don't have to go away, at least I hope you don't. Just let us know that you've done a little homework! Good questions stimulate good discussion. I agree with hands on. Its that way with wood buying too.

I just got some wood from Bell Forest and will never buy from them again ... Terrible quality ...

What kind of wood and what was wrong with it? I tried their shaft wood once when they first offered it and was rather disappointed but then shaft wood is not what they are known for.

I agree with you Eric. I have also been very disappointed with the quality. The last I ordered from them I got 20 pieces and only 3 or 4 were up to grade.

Dennis Diekman's wood storage collapsed, the woods fell down the river and your friend Johnny Hick salvaged them all?
