Best Money Player Alive Today

It may have used to be like that, but not anymore...:thud:
yes, it used to be like that but not any longer. as Ironman said it was a altogether different era. R.I.P. Don Willis, Bud Hypes, Bill Lawson, Ben Katz (not sure if he is still with us )

if i lived in phillipines with what i make playing pool i too would think pool is the greatest thing ever and play nonstop and i would make a nice living.
anyway im seriously considering selling everything i own moving to manilla and just playing pool. no golf ,dirt bike ,house ,2000 nut to live ,action everynight etc and see what i can do in the sport.

Hmm... sounds like what an action hound from the sixties would do. Go where the action is... pool players used to do that. A friend and player, Dave Krolich, moved there a little less than a year ago and loves it.
:p

Hey, I'm sure Fats will tell he's still the best player!

RIP= "Big Train" Greg Stevens (I just want a shot)!

CJ Wiley was a good money player until he started playing the pro tour.

This arguement should probably be prefaced by discipline, but if you look at the player with the highest winning gambling percentage, there is one name that jumps out at me as the best money player over the past 10-15 years ....

Jose Parica

Now, flame all you want all you Efren fans but i'd be willing to bet my home that Parica has a higher winning percentage than Efren .... Jose just plays so damn strong for the dough, it's unbelievable ....

Another super strong money player is James Walden. This guy does'nt get mentioned with the John Shmidts(sp) and the SVBs but to tell you the truth, other than Parica, he'd be my pick to beat any of those champions in a marathon race. Walden is a friggin monster for the dough and pound for pound the best all-around/all-games player ...

What say you?

The owner of this title is no doubt from the Phillipines. It would be: Alex, Dennis, or Effren.

The closest American would be Shane.

Europeans don't seem to have many $$$ players. Too bad. Maybe "Apple Jacks" is the best of them.

I never see enough of these Taiwanese or Chinese players to even consider them.

I posted (years ago) that the next country to crank out champions was gonna be Taiwan, based on what I saw there.

The Pool culture is a lil different than the Phillipines, Corey, but the results are about the same. Ask some of the top Fillipinos about how they feel about gambling against the top Taiwanese

I have to pick Alex becuase I've seen it so many times and I honestly don't think he would back down from an even game. I know he has been beat in the past but he's never quit anyone. Shane beat him three races at the Derby and he stuck around the US just to follow him around the country when he could have packed up and gone home.

He is a player that truly deserves his nickname the LION!

I may be biased of course because he is a friend of mine but I know he's got boat loads of talent, heart and courage. To me that is what makes the best gambler.

As a side note he is one of the most fun players to watch or be around, he can draw a crowd wherever he goes and he does not pull moves, cheat or make excuses.

By the way Alex has told me in the past no one has to like playing Yang or Orcullo for the cash.

If he were still alive...Louis Roberts would have probably rolled right on over to the Phillipines, walked right in their lair of hustlers then stated, "Lions and Tigers and Bears, OH MY! Boys, this whole island's got action!"

It's unfortunate that the American pool scene is without characters such as the late Louis Roberts, may he rest in peace.

There is no dominant gambler in the current world of pool so comparisons are worthless in my opinion, but please show me ANYONE with a better winning percentage than Buddy Hall in his prime and I'll stand corrected for sure! His game has faultered somewhat, but that man took 'em ALL on for year after year and I don't recall hearing about many losses that he booked either. :D

mention the name of late 'Buttermilk Brown' to Buddy and see his response. He was buddy`s nightmare. LOL
I agree with your assertion about Buddy hall and louie Roberts. Buddy is a better money player than a tournament player.People say that he has a mean stick when it comes to playing for money. He booked lots of winners and took care of his family with the money he won.

Perhaps I misstated my position. Having been to Chinese Taipei (Taiwan at the time), I also watched many of them: Yang, Kuo, Wu, Chao, Chang, and many others. I have personally played Pei Wei Chang before as well. Fong Pang Chao was the only one of note, IMO. He's interesting (demeanor), but none impressed me. Not even Wu, 'cept he's a yungsta!

Mostly, I meant, I have seen none gamble, except an older guy (looked like it) that Robb Saez played in Vegas. He was outmatched by Robb.

Those guys oughtta get out west more often :D

It was pretty cool out there at the time - 2004. Lots of pool fans & enthusiasts. Mr. Tu had certainly worked hard to make pocket billiards a respected sport among the people. I saw the possibilities and future while I was there.

Efren wasn't booking too many losses in the early and mid 90's. As Grady put it, Efren beat the nuts more often.
Nobody played him even in 9-ball then. I believe Billy Johnson played Buddy even.

.

That's what I was alluding to when I mentioned that the culture is a lil different. They do gamble plenty, it's just not the open market variety ala the Phils. In Taiwan, it also helps if you speak the local language ;)

I guess I'd have to go with Corey from the ones I've seen or bet on in person. Stevie also has always gotten the cheese when I've been in.

I guess if you go strictly by wins and losses then I'd have to nominate myself because I'm like 20 for my last 20 or so in money matches. I hardly ever play but people like to give me the nuts and try to outrun it because they think they might make a score.

The best money player to me is the guy that bets his own, wins over 70% of the time, and saves his money for the future when those eight-foot shots are not gimmies. Johnnyt
