Best player in Alabama?

Was the bar called the Flora-Bama? The building itself is divided by the Alabama/Florida state line.

I am was born and raised very close to Foley, but I'm 37 yrs old. So, I wouldn't know who your hustler was/is.

It was a long time ago but wasn't the Flora-Bama a hotel etc? If that is correct then this bar would be east of the F-B.

ahhhhhhhh, the flora-bama. I had a friend that bartended there, that made enough money to lease a small island. There was pool and dart action there back in the day. I think it closed about 6 or 7 years ago, but I could be wrong.

Yep, it was the Flora-bama. It was still up and running when I was in Gulf Shores about 4 years ago. That place stayed packed after dark.

20 years ago, I made the rounds through North Alabama and the big names were Keneth James from Athens and Billy Kerkendahl from somewhere between Huntsville and Birmingham.

There was also an old guy in Huntsville named Johnny Tona who could play straight pool with anyone. I think he was around 70 back then.

There was a young player in Alabama about ten years ago. I think they called him Little John. Played real good, great break. Is he still around?

The only Little John from that part of the country is from and lives in Hattiesburg Mississippi. Good solid player. He used to come and play at my house in Picayune, Mississippi about 15 years ago. he couldn't have been more than 16 at the time.

Speaking on "Monster Jones", I had a buddy in Knoxville last week ask me if I heard any news about Monroe Jones health.

Has anyone seen or heard anything about Monroe lately? In fact, I'm gonna start a new thread.

Mike

Flora-Bama is a very, very popular bar. If it were anywhere other than where it is on the beach, it would have closed years ago.

It's still going strong.

Glad to hear it. Shows how long its been since I have been down there, other than the Mobile barbox tourney.

Hello and happy holidays to everyone! A friend of mine and I(yes, contrary to popular belief, I do have one or two:p ) had a little disagreement the other day about who the best player in Alabama other than Scotty Townsend was(Scotty being clearly better than any others, so we threw him out). Like I said, there was a little argument, and I figured that the az crowd is fairly knowledgeable. So for any of you that are familiar with our state, we would love to hear some ideas/nominations. Thanks, and Merry Christmas!

I have a good Rowell story:

David has played good pool for many years. I was fairly new to the pool world in Birmingham but have always liked to gamble. Many people spoke of how well David played but he never got in action, like many of us he has more profitable things to fill his time. After getting to know the players and their speed it was pretty apparent that David and one other player were the best two in Birmingham without question ... the only real question was whether David was as good as the other player.

At a league tournament, both players were there and we were standing around. David made a joking woof at another player and I asked politely what weight he would need to play the other good player. He said he wouldn't need anything and would love to play even (he said this I believe knowing the other player had no money to bet it and thought it would be forgotten). Immediately I pulled out a good knot I had won over the weekend and said "Well you can have your wish right now."

............. crickets chirping. HaHa.

No disrespect meant to David Rowell at all. Just a great memory from my early gambling days.

Was the other player Jerry Lin? A buddy of mine attending UAB something like 20 years ago talked about that guy's ability being astounding. He recalled one story to me, where Jerry was trying to get up a game offering sizeable weight to this lesser player. The final offer was Jerry playing one handed, offhanded, jacked up. The other guy still declined.

Jerry Lin became a Dentist and moved to California about 12-14 yrs ago. And yes when he was here he played lights out he could spot all the people mentioned in this whole thread except for probably Hennessee and Scotty.

Anyone remember Doug James? I know he's from, or was, from Alabama.

Doug lives in Tunica/Memphis, Mississippi now. When he lived here he was one of the better players.

I've actually been thinking about kind of hitting the road(not as in I'm a roadplayer, more as in a pool vacation) in a few weeks. Where would be the places to go in AL to find action, with the exception of Birmingham, and Mobile,as I have played a bit there before, and looking for something new. And before anyone asks, I'm an idiot;) .Thanks for the input!

I met a player from Alabama ...Tuscaloosa Roy"
trying to recall???
Any help...
he seemed to play really good"

I don't think they are the best players in Alabama, but David T. and Tim O. both play pretty sporty at times. Tim's break is powerful!

There are two players in Tuscaloosa that play pretty well. Harold MacAbee (Smackmac) and a player to remain nameless that is not Roy. Marshall "Squirrel" Carpenter can be found there sometimes and out own merkyone Scotty Waters just moved to Birmingham from Tuscaloosa (No offense to them, but none of these guys play well enough to be considered best in AL).

Roy McAteer....I think hes probably on holiday....so ive heard. Muttley when you go on pool vacation stop through tuscaloosa, I might try you some with the last 2... They been playing nickle sets in there late at night lately....
