Best Players In Baltimore

I do like Tony too. good guy.

What ever happened to Nicodemus? And Cutty? And Spanish Rob?

Gary Played real strong, I beleive he was VA...

I gambled a lot at Jack and Jills from about 1998 to aorund 2004.. Thats just a guess. I seen a ton of great players in there. Tons of action. Lot of money. It was ruff around the edges. I watched players lke Leonardo Andam, Corey Deul, Ronnie Wiseman, John Kucharo, James Landria, Scott Frost, Chris Bartram, Denver Barger, Steve Moore, and the list could go on and on. This was a list of players who came threw gambling.

THe players I gambled with was, Tony Long, Carl Jones, Yen, Fat Wayne, Arron Nicodemus, The Late Jermey Montgomery, Max, Buffy, Chris MArtin, Red Hair Scotty, Littly Petty, Danny Green, Black Henry, Russ Parons when he was in town (I know he was from Newark) but he was in Baltimore quit a bit. I played Wayne Collins quit a bit. Mark Ford played some as well.

Tony Long Gets a Thumbs up from me, he is the best action in Maryland in my opinion, He is not the best player. But best action. He makes a game with anyone and everyone. Bets $100 to $5000.... Win or lose. He has a smile on his face. We have exchanged $20,000 over the years. Great guy.

Richie, I never met you back in the day beacuse I never went to Running out.

There are a few players from that area that haven't been mentioned, so I'll mention them. Jim McAdams, ACA Jimmy Mac, who actually put together the original Mid-Atlantic Regional Circuit, which became the McDermott Tour, which became Planet Pool.

Jim (Shorty) Henson, Bill Elliott, and Mike Seidel (a bit earlier, a 70s and 80s player). Also, the Boggs Brothers have been mentioned, they were Freddie and Scotty.

Of course Mike Sigel and Tom Vanover have been mentioned. I'll just recount the story of how Cigar Tom almost beat Mike in a challenge match of straight, nine ball, and one pocket in 1982, but lost, and lost the rematch a year later. That was at Gentlemen's cue (Benny's) in Reisterstown, and people were hanging from the rafters to watch both of them.

The Baltimore & Washington D.C. area was a great place for some of the best pool action in the States from the '60s through the '90s. Anyone could get played in One Pocket or Nineball around there. The best players in the Country didn't have to come out of the B'more & Washington area with the money. In the '60s there was The Jack & Jill Cue Club in Shirlington, Va. This was partly owned by Weenie Beenie. As a very young man I had the opportunity to watch many U.S. Open NineBall and Straight Pool Championship tournaments in that room. There was a show every night for years! ...

What a time to be a pool player and living in that area. It was great! I saw all the greats. Luther Lassiter, The Miz, Fats, Ronnie Allen, Richie Florence, Eddie Taylor, and all the rest of the biggest names in the game. There was also at that time a room in Silver Hill, Md. called Guys & Dolls. This room had some of the highest action in the U.S.A. ...

The '90s brought in a pool room in Glen Burnie, MD. called Jack & Jill (not affiliated with the one in Va.) ... Jack Cooney would come by and hang out for a few weeks looking to play a millionaire some one hand jacked up One Pocket. Joe Vesey (sp) was a great One Pocket player who was playing in that room for quite a while. I got in dead stroke playing him one night and ran through him like gamma rays.

Beside the names already mentioned there were a few others which need mentioning. Local talented players included Nate, (I never knew his last name) was a great One Pocket and 9Ball player. One day he broke the nineball in on me four straight times to get even. I had had enough and quit hiim. Larry Neudecker was amazing. His stroke was so smooth the cue ball traveled around the table like you were watching a ballet. Melvin Brooks (Strawberry) who past away not that long ago loved One Pocket and promoted two major One Pocket tournaments ('92 and '93) in New Carrolton, Md. I won the second of those events beating Jose Parica in the finals.

In earlier times Earl Shriver. He was like a scorpion around the pool rooms of Washington D.C. He had more moves than Trailways and single handily proved that you really can take it with you. He died owing everyone who knew him. Sam Trivett aka Seattle Sam lived in the Northern Va. area a number of years. What a charactor he was! Pure action! And funny? He could have been a stand up comedian and made a fortune. Billy Stevens was a cab driver in the area for a while and a great One Pocket player. He later moved to Richmond and opened a super room down there. He now has a room in Shirlington, Va. I'm sure he still plays well, and a nicer guy you won't meet.

I was lucky to live in such an area with so many great pool players at a time in my life when I was still young and learning. I picked the brains of every good player who was willing to give me the time of day. I owe so much to so many and I will never be able to pay them back except by paying it forward to the next generation of players. I guess that is one more reason I like to teach.

Tom

Thanks for the kind words Tommy

Yes, those were the days of a higher education. We both graduated (POOL U) by having some of the best of the best showing us a thing or two. Eternally grateful being around such great players, the poolrooms were 24 hrs and the action never stopped. Yes, those were the days my friend of fabulous pool

Me? Long story short I'm back driving a cab (lost both poolrooms you mentioned to the hands of women) and play very little pool nowadays ... Never could handle you on my best night but enjoyed our many matches

Sincerely hope you are well ...

CuL8r, Billy

What about Jerry Nichols, ex Md state champ. He told me that players from all over the country used to come in to town to play him 9 ball on a bar box. I never saw him in his prime but I heard from other respectable sources that he could really play on a bar box, even drunk as a skunk.

heNRY HAS MADE A BIT OF HISTORY HIMSELF!
cAPS lOCK!

I don't think Reggie Barksdale plays anymore.
I have not seen or heard about Jackie Robinson since USA Billiards in Laurel closed.
Henry plays at Top Hat in Parkville.

Cuemaker in Baltimore area

In 1977, I bought a cue from the owner of Krazy Cue Billiards in Pinellas Park Florida. His name was Bob ( he later sold the room and opened another a few miles north called Bob's Billairds ) and he was from Baltimore. He told me the cue was made specifically for Rich Riggi in 1948 by a cuemaker named "Matty" ( or, perhaps Mattie ). Bob said Riggi hit a few balls with it, didn't like it, and sold it on the spot to Bob ( who was in his early 20s at the time ). The shaft joint ring was broken ( I had a good cuemaker fix it right away ) and Bob had gotten another cue. I've had it since. I've owned many cues, a Rambow, a Tillis, a few Palmers, among others, but this cue hits them better than any other cue I've ever played with. The shaft is original and is straight as an arrow. The shaft is also amazingly flexible, so much so that when I showed different players just *how* flexible, they eyes have gone wide ( with apologies to the modern "no deflect" shafts ).

My question is this, if anyone has ANY info: I have googled "Matty" ( Mattie ) cues for years, hoping something would come up and have found nothing. I can't believe a cue of this quality was one of a kind. There *must* be other Matty cues out there somewhere. Has anyone from the Baltimore ( or anywhere else ) area ever ehard of Matty cues? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
