Best pool advice given?

"stand still like a statue until you re finished"

and

"Slow down your backswing"

On spin...

There is a thread going about the worst advice in pool you have been given. How about the best? What is the best piece of advice you have been given?

I can think of several, and many of them have turned into blog posts on my pool blog. But one that comes to mind is not thinking while down on your shot. Do all the thinking when standing up, and when down on the shot only execute what you've already decided.

Advice I got from a fella named "Willie" in 1965:
"Use spin only when necessary, and then never more than you need."

All of these are really good points. The one I relate to the most is playing better opponents. I was crushing people at my skill level and thought I was doing great then I started playing Tuesday night open tournaments at my local room with players a lot better than me and I have learned a GREAT deal just sitting in the chair watching them run out.

It's amazing just how eagar some of them are to also give you a few pointers right after the match about mistakes you make while playing them. I just started trying to talk to my opponent a little right after the match and that usually opens the door for that conversation.

I have learned being humble works very well when trying to get help from someone better :)

Great first post!
WELCOME TO AZ

This one has saved me I don't know how many times!

"Never pet a burning cat"

Seriously though...

"If you have a 50/50 safe and a 50/50 shot...go down swinging!"

Hit every shot the same, easy or difficult, relaxing on an easy one or bearing down on a difficult one always works against you.

Acu Stats videos of the best players in the world with camera angles you could not come close to in person. How did he do THAT?! Run it back as many times as necessary.
I can not imagine a better bargain than "Video of the month club" anywhere. First class
instruction and entertainment that has taught this old dog many new tricks.

Here's one tidbit that has stayed with me ever since I was a kid: "If you don't send the cue ball to a rail, you can't possibly scratch."

This. I was taught that just because you can make a cueball dance doesn't mean you should. Less is almost always more.

Explain please?

This post makes a lot of sense to me. Im not sure what the poster means but to me when i started playing pool i missed a lot of shots that looked right.
As my shot making improved i came to realize it wasn't my eyes fault.
My mind lacked the knowledge of the shot. Now i know some things look wrong in order to be right. But i still fall victim to what the eyes see.
