Hi, I recently got a pool table in my house with a TV nearby so I'm looking at getting a bunch of DVD's to watch to improve my game. I play the same speed as an APA 7 and I mostly play 9 ball. Please tell me what you guys recommend!

DVD's I already have:

Scott Frost's Power One Pocket 1 & 2
John Brumback's Secrets of World Bank Pool Champion
Joe Tucker's Racking Secrets

Check out Run out Media's "Break & Run". Found it interesting. If you like books I would suggest Jack Koehlers, "Upscale Nine Ball". It's a great read.

pool vidios

Check out Tor Lowrys Zero-x they are easy to follow and packed with info .

I enjoyed reading and watching Phil Capelle's 9-ball, Archer vs Reyes. Phil gives a shot by shot account.

I humbly suggest the "Video Encyclopedia of Pool" series (VEPS and VEPP). Here are some testimonials and reviews.

Thanks Dr. Dave. I've seen quite a few of the free online videos from the VEPS series and I like what I've seen but I don't want to spend that much money to see the rest. If they were cheaper I'd buy them. Sorry. By the way I really enjoyed that study you did on throw(I think that was you?), it was very helpful!

You get what you pay for. :grin-square:

Seriously, if you are interested, you can probably find a discounted or used set for a lower price online (or maybe from an AZB user who might want to sell a used set to you).

Good luck,
Dave

PS: BTW, you are the first person who has told me that my stuff is too expensive. Most people tell me I don't charge enough, as compared to other DVDs out there that cost more and don't include as much information and have lesser instructional value.

The Darren Appleton video "perfect practice" is a great instructional video for improvement.

I recommend Jerry Briesath's "Pool Lesson" DVD. It's probably more basic than some, in the sense that it focuses mainly on fundamentals and basic shots. I can imagine people watching it and thinking "I already know how to stand and stroke, I don't need this." But IMO, that's where 90%+ of pool players' improvement can come from, and I re-watch his DVDs periodically to get a refresher on the basics.

I'd also recommend Dr. Dave's How to Aim Pool Shots DVD, which is one of his smaller sets, and also recent. It doesn't overlap much with Jerry Briesath's - it has more on simple systems or heuristics for specific types of shots that come up like caroms and kicks and banks, like for when to mirror a kick from the diamonds vs. the rail groove or cushion nose, or for how and when to use front-hand vs. back-hand english.

IMO, Briesath's DVDs have the most accurate info out there on fundamentals, and Dr. Dave's have the most accurate info on which heuristics to use for specific shot situations.

Bert Kinister 60 minute workout + next two videos are best for rotation games you can get. IMHO.
You need to have quite knowledge and ability before you can get best from them.

This seems pretty good. I agree that everyone's fundamentals can use some improvement. I just hope this would be worth it for an advanced player.

I recommend Bustamante's How To: Windmill Stroke. Great for beginners trying to learn proper fundamentals.

Agree with this. I've had them all and tape one is still the best around.

Well, ya got 2 on the list that I was going to recommend. I had Joe's, but lent it out and didn't get it back. Can't remember who has it now.

Need to get John's.

Dr. Dave posted. Altho I don't have his yet, all one has to do is watch the Trailers, and you can easily imagine that the rest of the DVDs would be packed full of great info.

Tor Lowry's package of 3 downloadable DVDs would seriously give you a big surprise. I haven't heard one bad thing from anyone that has purchased Tor's.

The only other one that I can think of off the top of my noggin, would be Lee Brett's DVD. One can pick up enuff good info just by watching his UTbe Trailer.

Anything by Grady Mathews.

Most of Bert Kinisters stuff is good too. Get a monthly membership and you'll get the chance to watch them all. Some are better than others. His on screen persona is not everyones cup of tea but if you can sit through it you are almost guaranteed to learn something. His videos on pattern play, and position drills are particularly excellent.

Thanks everybody, I discovered a lot of new options I'll have to check out. Strangely enough though, while reading this I opened a fortune cookie that read "If you keep too busy learning the tricks of the trade, you may never learn the trade." I'm pretty sure this is telling me to stop watching DVD's and go play pool haha!
