Been putting on tips for 30 years and first used Super Glue Gel then went to Loctite Gel,,,Loctite now changed from gel to a glue with "gel control" which is ok but have had a couple pop off which never happened before.
Just wondering how well the Gorilla Glue Gel works with tips. Or any other type of gel/glue that works really good. Preferably not any epoxy that needs to be mixed.

I prefer Loctite 401 or professional, seems to work well on all types of tips and ferrule materials :-)

GG glue gel is crap.
Loctite Pro 9 ( thin ) is fine.
But, make sure you buy them from a store that stays cold all the time .

if you are using GG gel make sure you shake it well before using otherwise it is crap. :)

I replace 15 - 20 tips per week. As long as I prime the tip and the ferrule with thin CA before I apply the Loctite Ultra Gel Control, I have excellent results. Surface preparation has been the key for me. No pop offs in months. Every cue maker that I currently associate with on a regular basis uses this. I've tried 401, 411, & 454. Those glues work well, but in my opinion, the cost to effectiveness is no better than the Ultra Gel Control. I perform a pop off test to every tip that leaves my shop by laterally hitting the tip about 50 times against the floor. Not hard enough to break the ferrule or wood, but fairly hard. Rarely does the tip pop off with this test. (PM me for how I keep from losing the tip in case it does pop off.) I will also add that adequate clamping pressure is also very important, as well as the age of the glue once it has been opened. If the bottle has been opened over 30 days, it goes in the trash. Finally the glue must not be allowed to get cold or excessively warm for it to maintain it's effectiveness.

This topic has been discussed before, and I'm basically just sharing my summary of what I've learned from this forum. Nothing new here.

I agree with most of what you state. I've got some 401 ordered to give it a try. I've used most of the rest and 454 is what I had the best of luck with. The trouble that I had with it was that during the winter when I was installing 100-200 tips a month, the 20 oz. tube would get used up, but, during the summer when pool playing slacked off, I would still have a half tube to throw away as I could no longer trust it. I then went to the smaller bottles of gel and they worked, not quite as good as 454 but good enough. It doesn't hurt so bad to throw away a 3.00 bottle of Ultra-gel that I can get at Kroger's as it does a 25.00 tube of 454 which needed to be ordered.

I don't like to use thin super-glue as a base sealer. Doing so may be a good way to keep a tip on but I don't like the way it wicks on up into the tip making the tip so hard. I was using thin super-glue as far back as 1980 as there was no gel. I often had people complaining about how hard it made their tip.

I also prefer the Loctite ultra gel control. No matter what CA you prefer to use, make sure and buy it at a high trafic retail store. It's almost as bad for the glue to be sitting on their rack as it is to be sitting in your drawer. As much as I hate going to Walmart, this is one of the few things I make an acception on.

You are right on tip prep.......... face the ferrule , hold a piece of new 100 paper against the ferrule with you thumb and spin the chuck one turn and wipe off the dust with a clean paper towel... I sand the glue side of the tip and wipe it clean with a clean paper towel and put on 2 drops of stick fast thin CA.... count to 10 and dab off the excess with a clean paper towel................ hit it with a little kicker and sand lightly.... wipe it with a clean paper towel.............. I use Loctite Gel Control in the silver bottle..... put on a dab and press it on .................

toss the Loctite CA after 3 or 4 weeks.... I write the date on the bottle when I open it.... I know Lowes has stopped carrying Gel Control............ I get it an Walmart now.

been using locktite 454 for 16 years.....its the shiznit and i've never had a tip pop off with it.....yet, knock on wood lol

I can't say I have had issue with any glue I have used on tips. I'm currently using BSI IC-GEL, and have been for some time now. It's most widely used for gluing under water coral structures in fish tanks. Stuff is as strong & reliable as anything I have ever used, and unlike Loc-Tite products I have used, it never seems to harden inside the tube or go bad.

I have been using Loctite Gel for over ten years.

Last year I switched to Stick Fast Med CA.

4.5 oz for 10.00. I wipe the nozzle off with my apron every time and the cap does not get any build up. There is still two thirds of a bottle left and the glue is just fine in the bottle.

It works perfect just like the gel.

I thought that medical super glue was purple.

Ahha! Now I see. I mistook medium for medical. My bad.

Dick,

When you figure how much you spend on those little blue containers compared to 10.00 for at least 2 years of tipping. Forgetaboutit.

I never had a tip fail from glue with the gel. I did at least 5000 tips at my pool hall in ten years. Now with this new glue and about a year under my belt the evidence is there where this product is just as reliable.

Keep the nozzle clean before putting the cap on and your good to go.

I will post a pic of the bottle label and the condition of the nozzle after a lot of use. It's a no brainer. Just like the CNC sale.

Rick

I always thought that the CA glues had a shelf life and once opened it was fairly short. I like the little containers of Ultra Gel because I get about a month out of them and then I am on to a fresh one.
