Best Weekend Tournaments In The U.s.

I have been thinking about this for a while. Every now and then I have access to low cost airline tickets and was interested in knowing where the best "weekend" tournaments were located.

The Jay Swanson tournament is February 9 & 10th and is just outside of LosAngeles in Hollywood, CA. Cost for a round trip ticket retail one stop is about $400 and that is probably the highest retail cost for a RT ticket from New Orleans. Except for the cost of hotel, my costs would be relatively low.

Does anyone have any "weekend" annual tournaments that you would recommend for having a good time? Please state if a rental car would be needed.

By weekends, I mean Friday, Saturday and Sunday or even ONE DAY TOURNAMENTS which are even better. Any discipline is fine with me as I like most any one.

If you have a tournament that you would like to suggest for me to attend because YOU like it, please let me know. I don't think I will be going to a lot of them but I might go to one every now and then. Others on AZ might be interested in knowing of "weekend" tournaments that are designed for the working man.

About the only thing that I don't like about pool tournaments are the ones with standing room only. It just isn't worth it to me to have to stand like a penguin for days one end, trying to sweat a match or to have four and twenty railbirds chirping full volume in my ear as I bear down on a shot.

Thanks,
JoeyA

Hard time Sacramento has a 1st of the month One Pocket on the first Saturday and 9 ball on the first Sunday that adds $$ & gets quite a few players. 30+ for the one pocket & $20 entry and usually 50+ players for the 9 ball with a $25 entry. All you have to do is beat Billy Palmer who often wins both ends. Both tournaments are double elimination. The one pocket is a race to two and the 9 ball is a race to 6 on the winners and 4 on the losers. There are plenty of other good players there, and you can find a little action too if you are looking for it. John Henderson

Joey,

A good tournament weekend is when ever they have a mid-west 9-ball tournament at Shooters in Olathe, KS. The tournament includes a one pocket event, race to 3, that starts on Thursday night and usually finishes Friday evening. The 9-ball begins Friday at 8pm and runs through Sunday evening. The 9-ball tournament is held on valley bar tables with the red circle cue ball and is a race to 9 alternate breaks. The food is good and they put up bleachers to watch the action for the tournament. The last one they had 32 for the one pocket and over a 100 for the 9-ball. Players from all over the Midwest show up and it's very entertaining to play and watch. There is a calcutta and usually some very good players will show up including Dave Matlock, Danny Harriman, Chad Vilmont, Jamie Baraks, etc. But, there are a lot of locals that play so it is a tough tournament to win but cashing isn't out of the question. You would need a rental because Olathe is about an hour away from the airport. The next scheduled event is the weekend of February 21, 2008. The website www.pool4u.com has more info.

It's Nice To See You Keeping Busy By Starting New Posts (daily)

The Tampa/Central Florida area has plenty of great weekend tournaments, but if you decide to come this way, you will quickly become disappointed with where you will keep finishing in OUR tournaments.

Any of the viking tour events sounds like it would be great. a good mix of pros and top locals. plus a long term schedule you can plan around.

Joey you should try and come north and play in one of Mike Zuglans Joss events. You would probably need a rental car for anyone of these events because I don't think any of them would be a short cab ride. Turning Stone would be a good one if not to costly for you to fly.

Joey,

What is wrong with the good old Suburban tournament. HAHA. If you decide to start going to any of these tournaments, let me know and keith and i would probrably go with you.

Hey Walt! Good to see you posting. Haven't seen you around the pool hall lately. Did you and Keith send in your dough to Stevelomako for the AZ Room pool table playing privileges for the Derby City Classic?

I will be evaluating all of the tournaments posted in this thread and we can decide which of these is good for all of us. I was kind of thinking about the Reno Tournament that just passed. It sounds cheap as sin and lots of good competition.

I appreciate all of the posts about the weekend type tournaments and especially the insight as to what can be expected at each location. Billy Palmer isn't so tough so since Keith is our rocket man, we will put him on Billy and you can go after the easy action like John Henderson who has a few miles on him and would find it difficult to keep up with a young buck like you. Me, I will stay in the shadows waiting for Fatboy to bust me playing one pocket. :D

Since everyone knows that we have jobs and that we don't mind donating to other people's tournaments, we will have plenty of offers to play for the cheese. Many offers are made on AZ Billiards. It is hard to determine which ones are legitimate but I have had good experience with most AZers, some of who want to simply play for the fun of it and others who enjoy a little friendly gambling. The non-regulars AZers will on occasion pop in and mouth off trying to open someone's nose and try to bet their life savings on a guaranteed heist but that is infrequent. You should check out the thread about "Would you play some $30 one pocket with a stranger if they walked in the door? or something close to that title. There were lots of responses. I lost my database of names and screen names and locations of those who wouldn't hesitate to play for $30 with a stranger. Maybe I will have to build that database back up. It was fun and there were many people who would jump at the chance to play a stranger for $30 a game one pocket. That being said there are probably many more people who would play $30- $100 sets of nine ball in almost every city. I like the fact that AZers have jobs and are pretty open about how they play. There's even some guy named "Wayne" out on the west coast that will play just about any AZer. How's that for people on the west coast being loose with their money? I've heard just the opposite but up comes this guy Wayne who says he will play most any AZer and just enjoys good competition. I like good competition and think traveling to some of these tournaments could be fun for the three of us. We could probably set up small stakes games the night before the tournament in practically every city in the country with AZers and since most AZers have jobs and are nice people, we can expect to get paid if we win and if we lose, we will be treated kindly anyway. My personal experience with dozens AZers has been GREAT 100% of the time. Tell Keith to come out of the closet and start posting so the rest of the AZers can get to know him and you do the same. The AZers will take my word that you are both "GOLDEN" but they would like to get to know you themselves.

JoeyA

I just realized that was your first post on AZ. Visit and post often. You will have fun and become a better player because of it.

I'm pretty sure that any of Mike Zuglan's Joss tournaments would be great to play in and we might opt to play in one of them. Right now I am thinking that we want to play in some heavy added money tournaments simply to have a chance to possibly recover some of our expenses for traveling.

We may need to find another retired airline employee who is willing to bring us under their umbrella for the stand-by tickets. The two guys, Westbank Walt (NOT WALT FRAZIER) and Keith are nice guys who enjoy competition but don't play nearly as well as I do although as most of you already know, that isn't saying much. :) There....I didn't want to finish posting in this thread until I get the rest of the AZers salivating about the easy action from the Big Easy. :D I can say though that both Keith and Westbank Walt would be good comraderie with any AZers. I don't often vouch for people unless I know them well and I wouldn't hesitate to speak up for these two. W just have to get Keith's screen name and get him to start posting. He's the shy one. :p

Also thanks for posting about the Turning Stone tournamnet. I will have to try and drum up a flyer to review...

The Jay Swanson event is always fun. It will be a madhouse for the first few hours since there is always 180+ players. You'll need a car rental because LAX is at least 30 miles out.

I also like what they do at Sacramento HardTimes, mentioned above by jrhendy.

You mean they know this all the way back to The Big Easy? Jeeeez, I thought the Northern California boys kept it to themselves. John

You'll need A.T.&T., 411 and reach out and touch someone or PM AZBer James Roberts as James plays in most local tournaments. You may try AZBer Donnie Mills also.
Doug
( poker tournaments I know.............pool ? ) :)

*I have a call in for info on the new room on Dale Mabry, but I haven't heard back yet.
