Best woods for a full splice cue?

I plan to have a full splice cue made and have some questions. This is mainly a players cue.

What are the best playing woods for the butt? I assume a straight grain Maple for the forearm but really don't know. And for the handle?

What are the important properties for each?

There at many woods that can work. I just finished a rosewood into bacote forearm that was great. Played amazing. Purpleheart is another. Lightweight and stiff.

i believe that i would do ebony and straight grain if i did it again. I have a straight grain maple ad rosewood full splice and it is incredible.

Ebony forearm and Kingwood handle.
Both woods are dense and stiff.
It's just my personal opinion of course but ...
It's hard to beat good Ebony in the forearm for a real solid hit and feel.
To really perk it up try a 3/8 x 10 or Radial G-10 glass pin.
It's an awesome combination.

i'm not a cue maker but i ran into a guy that plays with a full splice purple heart and ebony cue that plays fantastic. it was made by an az cue maker. i offered to buy it off him a couple of times but he wasn't having it.

purple heart and ebony get my vote!

The more important question is who are you going to ask to build you this full splice cue....A good full splice builder will better be able to point you in the right direction as to what wood will feel like in the end. I'm more curious to see which cue builders who regularly post here actually build a full splice. I should have it perfected in a few years if you can wait that long!

In my experience, these two woods have made the biggest impression on me as a player. However, i have not played with a cue that had both purple heart and ebony together in a full splice. When i get set up to make cues, this is were i would like to start.

Wood density/hardness........

A few people have suggested hardwood into hardwood combinations. I would strongly suggest using a less dense/hard piece of wood for the forearm. I used rosewood into a tulipwood forearm full splice, and the cue hits like a brick. Very very stiff hit. It is great for a break cue, but does not have much feel. The next cue I had made we used bacote for the butt and purpleheart for the forearm. It plays jam-up and has good feel when you hit the ball on stroke shots.

So I would suggest maple/purpleheart for the forearm and whatever hardwood you like for the butt in a full-splice cue. My 2 cents, Scott

Brazilian Rosewood and old maple.

My pick, too. There's a certain "life" to good old maple & good braz rosewood that I rarely see in other woods. There is an eastern hemisphere version of braz rose that rivals or surpasses braz, but my lips are sealed.

My favorite is maple for the forearm and the back end wood is mostly for weight and balance. I like bocote, purple heart, wenge and rosewood for my handle favorites. For heavy cues I like ebony and cocobolo for the handle. I do build them in my shop for the person who asked that question also.

Thanks for the replies---much respected.

I discussed this with the blank maker and the cue maker. My original idea was Ebony forearm and Mexican Cocobola for the handle but this may be too heavy without coring the cue. Coring may reduce the playability. (?)

Plan B is Ebony forearm and Bocote for the handle. Even though aesthics are a concern---my main goal is a great hitting cue.

Any thughts?

I have yet to play with a bocote cue that I didn't like....although they have all had maple noses.

Then again, I am a sucker for a full spliced cue. :)
