Better & Reasonably Priced Chalk

Pre-Flag Master

Seems like the chalks I like are the older ones that had a more gritty consistency. Seems like the "grit" gets into the texture of the tip's leather better. I thought I had a make shift solution by baking Master chalk. But that only fixed the pasty-ness problem. eventually I realized it didn't really make the chalk adhere better. I'm going to try Silver Cup again, but from what I recall it was only a little grittier than Master and the grit particles were too fine anyway, and too dry to stay on the tip. I am also going to try the new Balabushka, but people are saying it's only a little better than Blue Diamond. I personally feel that Blue Diamond isn't really all that great either - just not that gritty really. Old Pre-Flag can be a little hard. It's like the grittiness is there, but sometimes too hard to really coat easily - you have to work it a bit. I might try leaving it in the bathroom - as I have read others have done with chalk - to see if it will absorb moisture and soften up.

But still, pre-flag is expensive and not readily available. Blue Diamond and Balabushka, too expensive in my opinion, but at least I would buy them if they worked as well as I wanted. And obviously, therefore, I think Kamui is too expensive.

So if there are any billiard chalk industry manufacturers out there reading this, I'd like to suggest some specifications. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way, so you would probably have a market if you created a new line of chalk that is...

1. Gritty enough to go into the leather.
2. Soft enough and moist enough to stay on the tip.
3. Not so soft or moist as to be too pasty and leave a thick cakey-ness on the tip which would then get on the cue ball. This leads to skids, and also makes a mess on the cloth.

Price it right, and you might have a great selling product. I wouldn't necessarily suggest replacing any current lines of chalk because different people like different things. If the SRP for a box of 12 was $7.50, that would be very affordable. If retailers broke out individual cubes for $.75 or even $1.00 each I would be fine with that, and think most people would be too.

Market the new line as "Blue Grit". Get some John Wayne movie clips with the right verbal snippets and IMO, you have a winner... "Here, you'll shoot straight with this!"

If anyone here feels the same way, post a reply to show your vote. Maybe this could actually happen (well maybe not the John Wayne part). Does anybody know if the people at Tweeten or Silver Cup or NTC read these forums?

Chalk

I really don't see what is wrong with Master's chalk now, but I have only been playing for 50 years, so what do I know? I am one not to be searching for a magic wand all the time. I find a product I like, and stick with it. I don't understand why you guys want to pay $3-$30 for one piece of chalk, when it is available with good quality for .25 a piece. Chalk is all about the same, and it is manufactured about the same.

If someone can prove to me that a product is better, and the price is reasonable, then I will try something new.

This is like someone down in Texas claiming their beef is special, and their Porterhouses for $50 are the best, when nothing is wrong with Kansas beef and you can get a Porterhouse for $18.

I agree with you... pretty basic concept and hard to argue

I do use Blue Diamond because I like the way it goes on my tip, no claiming any difference other than a personal preference. Over the course of a year I don't think the cost difference is much more than a round of beers.

However, the Kamui cost difference is more of a "sharp stick in the eye" thing for me.

Marketing basics... 1) say you are the best, 2) charge a ridiculous premium, 3) disciples will flock to the alter

worked for Starbucks didn't it?

I have tried all kinds of chalk. Haven't tried the Balabushka chalk, but have some on order now and will try it out soon. I have been using the new predator chalk and find that its only marginally better than Masters.

So, for now I am sticking with BD, best chalk for the money in my opinion.

Added: Forgot to mention that I just got some of the discontinued Cosmo chalk and need to give that a go also.

Russ.....

I just paid $258 Can for 25 pieces of Cosmo.
The stuff I got is as hard as a rock and not even close to 25 cent Masters.
Did I get jizzed or what?

I asked for a refund and was told that there are no refunds on over seas transactions. It was suggested that it was buyers remorse. Well, not the fact for what I paid for it. If it were close to the quality of BD or Russian Magic, I would be happy but like I said, not even close to Master chalk.
So yes, in a way it was buyers remorse. Remorse that I got FKed.
And because its such junk, I wouldn't think of trying to resell it here or on EBay.

My Pre Flag is 100% better than what I received. I guess someone thought I was a big dumb stupid Canadian that didn't know the difference.

Pay Pal dispute. Hope I win. Wish me luck.

Someone who thinks this much about the intricacies of chalk should definitely spend more time working on their actual pool game and less time thinking about chalk.

From what I've noticed, chalk has the aspect of performance and the aspect of applying it. I hope for your sake, the hardness is just a problem in terms of applying it. Maybe if you try "moistening" it, it would apply better. I haven't tried it myself, but some guy(s) on AZ was(were) talking about leaving their chalk in a humid area such as the bathroom to make it absorb moisture. I would think that would soften it up.

And because its such junk, I wouldn't think of trying to resell it here or on EBay.

Hopefully, you could sell it to someone who already knows they like that particular chalk.

Flagged Masters

I bought a gross of masters, flag variety. I baked a few dozen pieces in the oven, they played better. I forgot two pieces on my back patio for two months in south Louisiana humidity, you can wet a rag just waving it in the air. It was damp through and through and went on like Tammy Baker's make up. It played better than the masters I hadn't done anything to also. Obviously masters doesn't know diddly and anything you do to their chalk can only make it better! Or perhaps what really matters is chalking well and when needed.

Pre Flag, I shouldn't have to make extra modifications in order for it to work properly at over $9 a cube.

How old might my gross and a half of Pre Flag be. It sits on a shelf and when I need a piece, I take one and use it. Several shots before chalking without a problem.

The edges of the Cosmo are hard as a rock with the center being not much better.

I used a piece for 2 nights straight and gave it the benefit of the doubt.
You have to wipe it on the tip fairly hard to get enuff on for one shot and one shot is all you get with it.

The hardness prevents you from chalking properly by wiping the chalk across the tip.

I use Pre Flag, BD and Russian and even bought a piece of Kamui so I'd like to think I know the difference between good, great and crap chalk.

Masters chalk outshines the 25 pieces that I got by 50 country miles.

He did relent and offer to exchange it if I pay the shipping back to him.
At this point considering what I have seen of the chalk, I doubt I will get anything different back in the mail.

So, I ship it back to him and pay for shipping there and back. Now, I have paid for shipping 3 times and if I don't like it, I ship it back and pay for shipping 4 times. Hardly worth it. I may as well have bought a gross of BD for what it will end up costing in the end.

I'm not in the habit of screwing sellers round. All you have to do is read my ITrader.

I may shower with my wife on occasion but I doubt I will get into the habit of showering with a piece of chalk.

I have tried Kamui chalk (I got 2 cubes for Christmas). I quit using it about halfway through the first cube. Leaves too much chalk on the cueball.

I have some pre-flag Masters (blue). I can't tell much difference between it and the "flagged" Masters, at least not enough difference to pay the prices for what the sellers want for it.

I have two boxes (4 pieces) of Blue Diamond chalk that I got on-the-cheap from a friend. I have been using it about 4 months now. I thought this was a good compromise between what is good, quality chalk, and what a decent price is for said chalk. Only lately, I've noticed this chalk is leaving a LOT of "clumpy" blue marks on the cueball same as the Kamui. What gives here???

When it's all said and done and my experiments with "premium" brand chalks are over, I'm going back to the good 'ol "flagged" Masters and never look back. Then it won't matter if I leave a cube at the poolhall or simply be done with a cube before it's half used (as I am a "brusher" and really prefer my cube to be new or almost new).

Not disagreeing with you there, but I suggested it as a way to salvage the situation where you spent a ton of money.

Glad you won the dispute, I didn't know those got resolved so quickly.

funny stuff:smile:

If I remember, I was lucky and bought a gross from an AZ member for $120.
The pool hall had half a gross and I bought the owner a box of Master in trade.

You can still buy the Flag for $2 a cube and is very much worth it.

Original question still stands, does anybody know if the people at Tweeten or Silver Cup or NTC read these forums?

thanks

I agree, I think their inflicted with "analysis paralysis". The worst chalk I every used was good. I have Masters at home, on the table I have one with a flag and one with no flag, can't tell the difference. ???????
