Better Than Me...?

I was just curious as to whether any of the other players here ever had this happen to them and how they handled it.

A guy in this pool room started playing a few years ago. He is a pretty decent player and I'll rank him honestly on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being a novice and 10 being a respectable pro, like this:

• shot-making: 7
• position: 3
• break: 7
• pressure handling: 5

The thing is, all around, I am a much better player. I am a better shot-maker, play WAY better position, have about an equal break, and handle pressure better. Yet, all of his redneck friends (and I use the term in all sincerity without any degradation) say that he is better than me. I enjoy this partially because I can play him any time I want and 95% of the time I take him to school. I've even broke him on several occasions, once to the point of having to pawn his cue to pay me (his decision, not mine, I told him keep it). Yet, those same idiots always say he's better than me. What gives? Am I missing something? Of the top ten players at my PH, he doesn't even rank, whereas I do. Anybody ever had this happen? It pisses me off to no end to hear them talk about how "good" he is. Any opinions?

If you play for the cash and not for the notoriety, I can't see how this could possibly upset you. If this guy's friends have money, then you've got a great thing going. Cheer up.

Hmmm...

I guess you're right, but you know how pool players are...they like to have a little notoriety too. ;0)

Notoriety

Notoriety will kill your action. Be humble and wealthy my friend. Your ego is your worst enemy.
Don P.

I agree 100% with Don. Everytime you hear them talk about the guy you beat, just look at them and smile (knowing you beat their "pool god"). Then offer to play them for $50 or $100 a set :D .

Remember, you shouldn't care how good people think they are, but how badly you know you can beat them!

Ah,,,,so true, Don.

Just how much money do you think has been donated, over the years, because of those three letters, EGO? Billions. Be smart and match up well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,$Bill

Everyone here is on the mark...start agreeing with his buddies that he's the better player and you wish you could beat him. Then ask for some weight in addition to a bet of a couple hundred.

How it seems

I once played a good road player and won about $1600. In about 2-3 weeks time after the match , I, and my partner, had everyone who watched the match ... believing that I had lost about $600 !!! ...just because I had lost the last couple of sets...

Worked out pretty well for you didn't it ajrack. Hey Now!!!!

Quedup,

I ain't too sure what the heck you meant by 55, 65 etc. Unless you were playin' straight pool. But watch how you talk about Rednecks. I'm a West Virginia Hillbilly that the military sent to Germany and then to Texas, and now Oklahoma. I'm a Redneck Hillbilly, and can gamble with the best of them.

Of course I'm just givin' ya' a hard time. We may talk slow, but can "shoot the eye's off them balls"

Jim

Take the cash

Agree with the idiots and ask them to back this guy giving you some weight because as good as he is, you need it. There is an old saying, "consider the source". It's not a bad thing to remember.

I am a Damn Yankee ya know!! I'm hoping you understand the difference between yankees and damn yankees.

Yankees are like hemorrhoids. When they come down and go back up they aren't so bad, but when they come down and stay they are a real pain in the A$$.

Dan,

I didn't take no offense. What kinda' game were you playin' though. Was it straight?

Of course I know what a damn yankee is, it's a feller who wants to give me his money just for makin' the 9-ball :D .

West Virginia

My buddy from West Virginia called me a month ago and said he was comming over, said he was gonna bring his wife and his sister with him. I looked outside when he pulled up and there was only one girl with him. I didn't ask any questions man, go figure!!!!!
Don P.

Hey Don,

If she wasn't good enough for her brother who else would have her..."it's all relative in West Virginia".

Of course, his sister, mother, wife, could of taken you in a race to 9, well maybe not. But I would've had to defend her honor, 'cause she's related to me too of course!

If you get through Oklahoma on your way to SA stop by and give me a holler and a few dollars outta' your pocket.

Doug, your post is about life, not about pool. No matter what you accomplish, there will always be those who don't give you the credit you deserve. Sometimes, it will be out of ignorance, other times out of spite, still others times out of jealousy. The presence of such people shouldn't drain you of any of your self-esteem, and if you're allowing it to, you're making a mistake.

This is the wisest information you will find here. I would like to add one other reason: sometimes people expect too much out of others. The better you are, the more they expect. This does not mean there is something wrong with you, or someone has a low opinion of you. It's human nature to demand more of those most capable.

I say go ahead and let it anger you a little. Then use the anger in a positive way - to improve. The ego is a hungry beast - we are always trying to tame it. I say, go ahead and let it roar once in a while. Use that fire to fuel you to practice harder, try harder, play better, play smarter. People get to the top for a reason, maybe you've found yours.

I always like to hear people tell me that this guy is better or you just got lucky to beat him. I learned long ago to play just good enough to win and get the cash. They always come back for more . my 2 cents

APA 9-ball. You win by scoring points--1 point per ball and 2 for the 9. A SL 8 needs 65 points to win before the SL7 gets 55.

Also, we sometimes refuse to acknowledge a "better" player because they seem to desire recognition a little too much. Just a little harmless fun, but it really pisses off some people who want to be known as good.
