Billiard Books and Videos?

I was talking to a friend about billiard books and videos(showing my age) DVD's, and he is always is busting my balls about how many I own. I order just about everything on the market. I have doubles of some things. He asks me all the time what do I get from them? It got me thinking, and the best I came up with is, it just keeps me involved.
I read the same books over and over sometimes. Ive read the " The Science of Pocket Billiards" probably 50 times. Its a sure cure for insomnia, but is has some of the best information that is not out there.
The other question always comes up "If you have all those books and videos than why do you still suck"? Some friends huh? But they all know where to come with their questions.
Why do I have all of these books? When I really think about it , there isn't one that has answered all of the questions. I still haven't seen one that tells any real secrets to good play. Ive had a few top players share a couple or tid bitts that are worth $100 dollar bill but why never from a book?
After we talked about pool for a couple of hours he asked me why I didn't write my own book? Now after I got up off of the floor from laughing so hard I reminded him that I can barley spell my own name. Im not very good so I cant write any type of instructional book. Ive never been on the road, so no road story books. Ive never won a big tournament, so no winner circle books. He said to write a book with all the questions you've never had answered before. Everything you ever wanted to know about pool but were afraid to ask.

If you could have any question about pool answered, what would you ask and who would you ask it to. Maybe its a general question. One particular piece of information that you just want to know. Maybe you want to hear a certain opinion, on a certain subject, from a certain player. Let me know what you are missing from the books and dvd you have bought.
Ill share mine since im asking you for you thoughts. I would ask Efren about his thinking when he applies English to the ball. I want to know what his thinking process is when he is stroking the ball till he makes contact. Im at a point where the part of the game that eludes me is strategy. Im a bar box player and I was watching Rodney and John Mora on You tube and I could not figure those patterns out to save my life. I can make shots, Im a decent banker and Im working on my game all the time but what ball do I shoot to get out? They say that cant be taught but there has to be some kind of general rule or plan that the pros use
What do you want to know?

Books equals knowledge. One can never have enough knowledge. Being knowledgeable is different from being an excellent player. Reading books doesn't mean you have to be as good as a top player who can execute all the shots in the books, textbook-style. You may learn from books, or from others' experience. Ask questions, like you did, then experience it yourself, best way to learn (anything).

"Why do you still suck?", good question. Suck, compared to whom? To the pros? Maybe you don't commit enough. Would you commit as much as the pros do and consider playing pool as making a living? I doubt that.

I would ask Hal Houle why real CTE (Pro One) works and he would answer in a way I could understand.

I would also ask Samuel Clemens what it is about pool that ruined his naturally sweet disposition.

Sweep left or sweep right: That is the question.

P.S May lesson with Mr.Shuffett is March 29th

I think someone would be better off getting lessons from a qualified instructor first thing as all the books in the world wont show what you are doing wrong. Once you know for sure where you need to be corrected, then you can build from there.
I never knew or could tell i was dropping my shoulder or my stance was incorrect, how could i know about it ? I needed to be shown.
Thats my opinion, and i could very well be wrong which wouldnt surprise me at all, lol.

Good day J-Flo

Do you have any of my products or would you like to know what I have?
The ARCHER-REYES EIGHT BALL, NINE BALL match is textbook playing by two greats in their prime.
Just a thought.
Keep it nice. Alfie

You didn't read the entire thread

Maybe i made it to long but the thread if asking you what question would you ask and to whom would you ask it? Is there a pro out there who you've been wondering something about? Have a good one AT,

I don't think just reading about executing a stroke can get you where a good instructor can.

The books that have improved my game the most were books on kicking or bank shots. Freddie the Beards books for example.

Some pros do not run always run balls the textbook way. For example, many players I know have watched a guy like Corey Deuel run some racks of straight pool and comment how he had to make 5 amazing shots before he ran 50 balls. Shots a B player would miss half the time.

Earls patterns used to bug the crap out of Grady, but he still ran out from everywhere.

Get some videos of guys like Rempe, Varner, Sigel,etc...and you are pretty sure to watch the game played the "right" way. These guys also pocketed balls well, but played a very smart high percentage game. Johnny Archer really seems to look over tables and manage his game to make it as easy as possible, too.

I'm always interested in learning new kicking systems. I would probably try to learn more about kicking.

Search for the Deadaim "Kicking Academy" on this site or look into getting copies of the Walt Harris books. Harris put out four books for billiard players that have many systems you can translate to pool if you put in some time.

Bud...re Walt Harris..you have an opinion whether to look for his books or dvd series? Books seem hard to come by.

I totally agree with you.

John: Stan has a very good reputation. I have a friend who has taken lessons with him and he speaks highly of him.

Good luck to you.

In Robert Byrne's Treasury of Trick Shots, there is a shot where the object
ball is froze, the cue-ball is froze and you're jacked up by a ball's width over
another ball, which is also froze...all on the same rail. Your mission is to make
the first ball and draw back for a carom on the ball you're jacked up over.

Mr Byrne said this shot is worth the price of the book.

If you can advance your knowledge by one iota, the book or video was worth buying.

To be honest, I've never heard of there being a video version of any of his books. Mr3cushion just sold a full set of the books last week.

You need to be a "math guy" to take full advantage of many of his systems...I've tried to show people stuff from his book, and many just don't want to think that hard.
