Is there a sub-remedial?
The labels used on the BU Rating System page for this are "beginner-0" and "absolute beginner." But it would be fairly difficult to not get a total score of 20 or more.

That's where I would be.
You're probably right, but I guess we'll never know for sure if you don't complete the exams and post a video. :frown: ;)

Catch you later,
Dave

Then yet, the drills could really help your position play which is critical in one hole....but, it's your money.;)

How would you know I am not doing drills? But honestly I disagree about the value of drills. I kind of prefer Shane's approach, "what's a drill?"

Pretty sure I won't have too much to worry about come game time for my position play. But if I need a tune up I will just start up CJ's videos and get myself TOI certified. ;-)

There is a LOT more about one pocket that Dave's drills can't teach. A lot of nuance to the game which requires plenty of time to figure out. No time to waste being repetitive on beginner drills. Not for me right now.

JOHN!!!!! Get off the computer and get to the table to practice or make a case. Those are your only options until your match is over (except family).

It's 1am here. Watching one hole right now. By the time this match comes around I will be a walking encyclopedia of one pocket moves and can quote which game and against who they were played.

I promise to try the exam after my big match.
Your friend,
Travis Trotter
Sorry, but I don't know this reference. It is somebody famous for making lots of excuses? ;)
You don't know Travis Trotter? Give up your AZB badge immediately. You are demoted to junior poster.

John,

If you are not carefull, your name might also be used as an AZB noun or verb in the future. For example: He's pulling a "John Barton" by changing his mind so often. Or maybe: I just got "John Barton'ed" because he is making so many excuses. :D

Dave

6/20/2013:
I will try this as well.

6/21/2013:
Right now no time and the pool table is currently cluttered with case stuff.

But after reading through everything I am highly impressed with what you have put together.

6/21/2013:
I have never had a problem embarassing myself on video before.

6/30/2013:
I haven't had time but I have done a few of the drills.

9/23/2013:
Why isn't focusing on the skills needed to do well on this test going to raise a person's overall skill level? If you only get a ball better then you surely win more against other people you formerly lost more often to.

9/23/2013:
I will. It's just been a really busy summer, it's not fun to play in the heat in my shop and my back has been really bad so I haven't played at the shop that much.

10/28/2013:
I told you I would do it but I am going to hold off.
...
I promise to try the exam after my big match.

Your friend,
Travis Trotter

10/28/2013:
I am not sure I want to be ranked.

10/29/2013:
I disagree about the value of drills.
... Not for me right now.

How would you know I am not doing drills? But honestly I disagree about the value of drills. I kind of prefer Shane's approach, "what's a drill?"

I do not draw the ball reliably when the OB and CB are too far apart. So I set up a shot where the two balls are kind of close and I pull the CB back to the rail.

I then set the OB a little farther away, maybe a diamond, and do it again. After each success I move the OB farther away until I find that spot where I can't pull the CB back.

And then I keep practicing with that distance between the OB and CB until I'm reliably making the shot that I want.

So my question to you is, How is that not a drill?

FYI, if you want some help with this, there is a lot of good advice along with online video demonstrations and useful "drills" on the draw shot technique advice resource page.

I hope it helps,
Dave

Also Joe Tucker's 3rd Eye Stroke Trainer has helped me immensely with this. My stroke has improved significantly since I've been doing straight in stop shot drills with it. I found out I was getting unintentional english and a lack of draw action due to clenching the cue. Now I am aligning better and stroking more smoothly.

Good point. Being able to align the cue with the center or vertical centerline of the CB is a critical fundamental of pool. Probably the most common cause for not doing this well is improper visual alignment. If your personal "vision center" is not over the cue, many problems can occur. For those who want to test this, and who don't have a JT 3rd-eye stroke trainer handy, the info, advice, videos, articles, and drills on the "vision center" resource page might be helpful.

I hope this stuff helps some people out there, and I hope these same people will use the BU Exams to monitor improvement as you make changes to your game.

Good luck,
Dave

How about this? I reserve the right to do what I want when I want to for whatever reason I see fit to do it.

I put the donuts on the table and started it but I honestly have NOT had the time to go through the whole thing and now I guess I will never do it because frankly I don't see the humor here. Add to that the fact that right now I am in training for something else so I really don't have time.

Maybe tomorrow I will get the joke.

But I will do this....if you get Lou to do it I will send $100 to the BEF if I don't beat his score in a week.

Now you have some incentive to get two people to do it. :)

So my question to you is, How is that not a drill?

I guess anything you practice repetitively is a drill. I don't think they are bad. I think they have a place in pool for sure and are good for building some skills. I have done my share of them.

I am not convinced that proficiency with drills translates into playing ability though. But I don't really see where it can hurt.

I prefer to work on puzzles. I set up problems and figure out the best solution. That engages me far more than drills do. Even when I complete a drill I don't really get the satisfaction that I do when I solve problems.

Sounds good to me.

Lou, are you out there listening?

I'm sorry if I offended you with my "John Barton" joke. I'm just a little disappointed that so many people have said they would do the exams and post scores (and videos), and many of them have not.

LOL at pulling a Barton!

Dave, am I correct in thinking no one has posted a video of them playing the 10 ball ghost? It would be interesting to see how they play the game in comparison to how they play the drills.

I agree. It would be nice to see some 10-ball-ghost videos to go along with the posted 10-ball-ghost scores; although, I trust that people are posting accurate and honest scores.

Regardless, many of the "drills" in Exam II (line-of balls run-out, rail cut-shot run-out, the three 8-ball run-out patterns, and the three 9-ball run-out patterns) require strong run-out skills (with good shot making, CB control, and consistency), so IMO an unedited Exam II video is good enough to show a player's run-out "speed" (on a good day, when playing well).

Regards,
Dave

I did the fundamentals exam again last night and scored a 57 -- 11 points better than my first attempt.

I'm not sure what, if anything, to take away from that; drawing conclusions from 2 data points is silly. The first time I took the exams I had not been playing much. Since then, I've stored the golf clubs and have been concentrating on my pool game. Maybe I'm on the cusp of something... When I did a lot of those drills (e.g., wagon wheel), I only missed the target ball or area by a little bit...

No time this weekend for the skills exam... maybe monday night.

Thank you for posting again. When you get a chance, please also post a 10-ball ghost score.

Sounds good. It will be interesting to see how much you can improve your score (and game).

Anybody plan to work on the exams and maybe post some video this weekend?

It's time for everybody to stop pulling a "John Barton." ;)

Good luck,
Dave
Anybody do their "homework" this weekend?

I look forward to seeing more scores and videos from more AZB users over a wide range of abilities.

Catch you later,
Dave
