Billiards is Food for the Soul

Thanks so much, Jim. I feel the same way about you. There truly are some good pool folk on this forum.

I just received a PM from Steve the table mechanic from Southern California. He gave me a little pool smut to give Keith, but he also shared this link about Raytown.

I love this pool room more and more. It may just be the last one of its kind, a traditional American pool room.

I will be going there next time I am on the road going west, without a doubt.

Here is the new link about Raytown and Don Brinks: http://www.realcities.com/mld/kansascity/living/18450503.htm

I got a kick out of this quote from the article: The floor is Oriental rugs. The air is powder, smoke and grumbles.

I am very sad today. Pug Wilson is dying. I don't know how long he has but he just signed a card for Eveil a couple of days ago. He almost seemed like the same guy he has always been. One of the best damnnnn bar box players ever. He still tries to get up and play on the six by twelve for the morning golf games. He was only able to get up six times in March. Last tuesday Randy Bell had to step up and finish his last game.

We talked several times today but I don't think he was even able to watch the Kansas, NC game... I'm pretty upset right now cause it just seems like they are all going away.

He says he doesn't even care if he ever plays again. I personally can not stand to see any person in such pain. There are special people that can do that. He didn't think he could make it through the winter. His birthday is the 11th I hope he makes it that long. Oh well, we never thought we would see 30 right?? He can still make me laugh. I want a rematch.

WTF please tell me I can just blink my eyes and we can all be at the big pool hall in the sky. If there isn't pool there maybe I don't want to go.

Raytown Recreation photos

Here are a few photos I took of Raytown Recreation when I was back east working. I remember when Keith would come back to Hard Times from back east and not miss a ball for days. He said all he did was play on a 5X10 since he was gone. They call the 5X10 Big Bertha and you can see Don in the back ground. I wonder how much Keith has won or lost on that table.

I can't wait for Keith to rise and shine to show him these pictures, Steve. Thanks so much for sharing. Wow, to see that Oriental carpet and all is kind of cool!

Hopefully, Keith can post a story or two about him and Don at Raytown! :p

Just ask him when he wakes up. He'll know whithin an approximate range. If I remember correctly he rarely forgets a game that he lost.

All I know is that not much (money) came back to the West Coast. At least not in the late 70's or early 80's. It was a strictly cash and carry world. Make it and spend it all before sleeping. That was the rule. wake up with just a few dollars and go out and make it again.

Good talking to you today, Steve. I just got off the phone with Don. Don is doing well. By the way, he is almost 80. He will be 80 in a month. Unbelievable, huh? Him and I go way back.

Those pictures bring back a lot of memories. I told Don how to come on this forum, so that he could see what was going on. Me and Don used to do a lot of things together. He's a good-hearted man.

I remember playing Benny Conway back in the mid '70s on that front table. Benny was a machine back then. I think he run seven racks on me, clean ones, tough table, tight as hell, but I believe I did come back and beat him as well. I make no beefs about it. "Benny Without a Penny" could play. That was his nickname before they started calling him "Goose." LOL. :D

I'm going to stay in touch with Don, Steve. Thanks again for the info. :)

A True Character.... imo

That's what we called him in New Orleans back in the 70s also.
Some things never change, sometimes. :)

Sorry to report that I just learned that Don Brinks passed away. Keith will be devastated when he wakes up. :(

He is now with his lovely wife in heaven. May he rest in peace!

So sorry to hear that. My best to his family and friends. I had the pleasure of meeting Don, but didn't know him well. Never heard anyone say anything other than good about him.

Jennie, you still need to come to Raytown Rec someday.
