I was reading the Obit of Bo Belinsky, the first pitcher to throw a no hitter for the angels. It said the following:

He was born Robert Belinsky on Manhattan's Lower East Side, then moved with his family to Trenton while a youngster. He was nicknamed Bo for the middleweight boxer Bobo Olson in tribute to his street brawling. His favorite sport in high school was pool, and he hustled with his pals Cincinnati Phil, Norm the Farmer and Goose McDonald.

So, is there any chance somebody here remembers these guys? If so, any tales to relate?

I do not know who he is, but sounds like a very interesting story. A pool hustling brawler who became a great pro baseball player. Interesting.

Don't know how good he was but reputedly, back when the LA Angels tried to sign him for $6,500, he turned them down saying, "I can make that shooting pool.

The OP was referring to an obit.

John Kling is probably the best pool-playing baseball player ever.

I wouldn't call him a great boxer.
He fought nothing but bums and retired with an 11-0'record iirc.

Angelo Dundee did not agree with you....
...the fact that he was light and hit like a heavyweight caused him to break his hand too many times....Angelo said it was unfortunate.

And Sugar Ray Robinson would disagree with you also...he admired Danny's right.....
...called it one of the finest punches he had seen.

We got Danny to throw a few punches in a quiet room..(.80s)...y ou could hear the wind whistle, just like a martial arts movie.

I also heard Danny knocked Gene Fullmer and Jake LaMotta out in sparring.

I don't recall that...but Danny asked me what I thought about his book with Jerry Forsyth....I told him I liked the boxing part the best.

...pt...abysmal fight record

Yes I believe Danny had less than 20 pro fights but he won a dozen or so by knock out. And I remember Danny saying that he is in the Boxing Hall of Fame.

There's a chapter in the book "Bo - Pitching and Wooing" about his pool hustling exploits while growing up and on the road with Norm "Farmer" Webber. Freddy Guarino introduced him to me around 1990 at his Las Vegas poolroom. A very interesting person with lots of old stories and still played pool fairly decent. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bo_Belinsky and http://www.ebay.com/itm/BO-Pitching...892417?hash=item3ac1b3d941:g:esIAAOSwubRXEmmy
